Might Jenn Sterger have a future as a VP candidate?

sterger_jets.jpgI haven't gotten around to interviewing Jenn Sterger, a recent addition to the Jets' game-day festivities.

So Bob Mantz beat me to it here.

Bob asks the tough questions, such as: If Sarah Palin can run for VP, why not Jenn?

Speaking of Ms. Palin, what's with the thick upper Midwest accent? I knew many transplanted North Dakota and Minnesota types when I lived in Anchorage, but Palin has lived in Alaska since she was in infant.

Speaking of the Republican Convention, it's absurd that with three cable news channels filling 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 mind-numbing days a year, convention watchers were forced to turn to C-Span to watch the traditional roll call of states that nominated John McCain.

Sure they're corny and predetermined, but they are a celebration of America and Americana, and skipping them so political commentators can have more babbling time is an insult to viewers loyal to both major parties and is downright unpatriotic.

Neil,
The whole Mat-Su Valley area is a hotbed of Old Minnesoda dontcha know.
Back in the 30's FDR "resettled" 100's of Norwegian and other Scandahoovian immigrant families from MN to the Palmer/Wasilla area to carve out a farming existence in the fertile valley and see if there was anything more to what was still kinda "Seward's Folly".
Old dialects and accents die hard.

Thanks for the nice little history lesson, I505. McCain's Folly has put me in the position of trying to explain that the population of San Diego is more than in the great state of AK.

Glad C-Span was able to telecast the state roll call, though I wasn't one of the dozen or so people that watched. I think I pay for the commercial-free C-Span channels with my cable bill, right?

I once attended the state fair in Palmer. They had vegetables there that were something out of science fiction.

(The rest of WatchDog Nation must love it when Islander505, Charlie Chilkoot and I start waxing nostalgic about the 49th State.)

"They had vegetables there that were something out of science fiction."

80 pound cabbages.
Not to mention the world famous Matanuska Thunder"something" that was on par with the finest comparable exports from Mexico, Colombia, and Hawaii.

Very fertile soil is that Matanuska Valley.

Not sure which 18:04 that was posted in, but it's still here. Not only was there some potent rope to burn, it wasn't criminal. Ahh, those were the days.

So, are i505 and Chilkoot old roommates or drinking mudies from your days in Alaska, Best?

None of the above JBM

My roommates were for the most part a lot cuter.
And unless those two bellied up to Koots or the Fly By Night Club or Darwin's Theory or the Bird House or The Bush Co or ...oh never mind.. on a regular basis, we ran with different herds.

Based on what I've gleaned from this blog, I have a pretty good idea who Charlie Chilkoot is, and have a visual on him based on his old bio pic that accompanied his sports articles.
As such I can't remember ever insulting either one of them in a tawdry establishment up there.
Besides, my newspaper reading was pretty much limited to Satch Carlson (sorry guys).

BTW, CNN had a remote feed from Anchorage the other night during Palin's speech, they were interviewing her sister from "The Peanut Gallery Restaurant".
I remember it as "The Peanut FARM", and it was really more of a tavern than a restaraunt. (All I ever got was peanuts).

JBM,

Best and I were never officially roommates, though he let me borrow his couch for extended periods of time before I flew off to train for the Alaska Army National Guard.

I505, bizarrely enough, I only psuedonanonymously know through commenting on this blog. Though in each of the several Anchorage Watering Holes, I've raised many a glass, and may have included him in some of the general toasts. But I was a photographer/lab tech at the Anchorage Times, not a writer, so his mental picture is of someone else.

Koots,
If you ever pulled the chord after 3AM on a Friday or Sat night at Koots (or any night for that matter) or timbered up at the Bird House, than we have probably shared one, or at least shared a kindred spirit.

Side note about the "Pub" Palin is bringing AK now.
When she was named last Friday, I dutifully wiki'ed her to get the dope on this Matanuska Maid. (disclaimer....that's not a sexist comment cheechakos, Mat Maid was a brand of milk up there).
What I discovered had me shocked and howling with laughter.
The Green Party candidate in Barracuda's (no apologies from me Wilsons) guv race was a guy that crawled in our crowd way back then.
All I'll say here is, if that guy ever made the jump to stardom as Palin has, it would make for a really interesting VETTING process, one that I would pay money to observe.
(The explanation for resuci-Annie, for one, would be a classic).

BTW, I would like to nominate the word "Vetting" for the Media's "Yeah it's a real word, it's just that no one has ever used it much in the past, and now we sound really smart using it" Honors.

Speaking of "vetting"
Am I the only person who, when hearing that word, gets a visual of what Marlene Dietrich was doing to her lips before planting one on Clive Brook in Shanghai Express?

Or on a personal note, what Salvatore Dadressoff was doing with Anita Bellacroccia between the bucket seats of his 68 Corvette in the parking of Massapequa HS in 1971?

okay, it's Friday....I go home now.

Speaking of "vetting", John Stewart has a pretty funny take on the process with Palin:

Yes, 505, I saw plenty of 3 a.m.'s in AK. And lived to tell the story, though not with the great detail you so colorfully recall. Nice job.
