C.C. Sabathia might have made that play, or, um, not

capt_a359c2ed454d4c4b813347a3dc80bc6c_rockies_brewers_baseball_wimg109%283%29.jpgVeteran MLB official scorer Howie Karpin has a more relevant take on the whole C.C. Sabathia error/hit controversy than you or I do.

Here it is.

Thanks for the link Watchdog. After reading what Karpin thinks, I believe it should not have been ruled a hit. The situation is turning into a legitimate mess, but the most important thing is to get the call right. Even now. I sure hope pride doesn't stand in the way.

Watchdog, have you heard anything about YES eventually developing a companion radio station, not unlike ESPN. Is this something that is on the drawing board? Are there any FCC roadblocks? I realize that YES will have to buy an existing station and convert it but this doesn't seem to be an insurmountable obstacle. Can you share any information?

This was far from the worst call in the history of official scoring. It could have gone either way...the fact a no hitter was involved should have nothing to do with the call.

Bare handed pick ups are not always successful..the fact he tried to bare hand it meant he felt it was going to be a close play...he didn't pick it up....base hit.

Why are the Brewers whining so much about the call?

Clearly, it's time for MLB to consider the use of instant replay for all calls made by official scorers.
Or at least when the issue of a no-hitter is at stake.

Right Jim?

;)

(DISCLAIMER,,,YES I am being facetious, tongue in cheek, sarcastic WHATEVER).

NO TO ALL INSTANT REPLAY.

Play the damn game and move on.

Jeff hit the nail right on the head. The play was close enough that it could've gone either way. The Brewers--especially Ned Yost--look like big babies. You'd think they'd show some class and just take the win as they chase the Cubs and try to hold off the Mets/Phillies/Cardinals. Good to see the Mets beat them today.

I-505 you found me! And no Richie G. :) It's me on Spin Cycle, too.

I am dead set against instant replay. Baseball has done just fine without it. Blown calls cut both ways and are rather rare. The game is played by humans. Baseball is slow enough already. We don't need 5-10 minutes breaks to exam replays, etc. Why is every innovation enacted by Selig a bad one?

"It's me on Spin Cycle, too."

I figgered. People always leave some sort of signature in their writing styles.

Hi Jim!! I'll see you in Ken's blog shortly I'm sure. Neil this is a great article...thanks.

Jeff, CC said after the game he shouldn't have barehanded it. He had plenty of time to put it in his glove. So I think thats where I give him the error.

I also dont think the Brewers are whining. They are just standing up for their pitcher that has done so well for them.

The second to last game last season John Maine had a no-hitter at a point where people starting thinking but not talking about it. A Joe Schmo on the Marlins hits a dribbler, Wright tries to barehand it but slips from his hands since making the play would have been impossible. Wright used his barehand, it went for a hit. Nobody complained.

Ned Yost needs to grow up. He knows if it went for an error one Pirate would have at least gone up there to bunt.
