Ted Nolan no longer is the Islanders' coach
So much for any chance Billy Packer had of sneaking onto Newsday's Tuesday back page.
There is just way too much going on in the world for me to keep up.

He'll probably never get another job while extremely underqualified people get two or more coaching gigs. Wait that's already happened to him.
This dismissal of Nolan has been a long time coming.
Right or wrong, it was coming.
Handwriting has been on the wall since the last Ranger game at NVMC when Dubie started over DP, and Snow started what would evolve into an airing of dirty laundry in the press by he and Nolan.
(The only game I attended at NVMC all year.....no connection BTW)
It probably took too long to happen.
I'm just impressed (distressed?) with the timing of it today.
What with thousands of national media converging on the Bronx to cover the All-Star events?
Very Steinbrenneresque in a way, no?
You can't be a coach who undermines the GM and keep being hired. Nolan didn't learn from being blackballed all those years. It's a shame, he's a real good coach. OTOH, Garth Snow seems to be making Mike Milbury look like Scotty Bowman.
"OTOH, Garth Snow seems to be making Mike Milbury look like Scotty Bowman."
Well, Sandy, actually Bill Torrey would have been a better analogy than Scotty Bowman, as Bowman's real claim to fame was as a coach, not so much as a GM. (Although he was no failure in that regard either).
But beyond that, let's not jump to conclusions on Garth.
Remember, he inherited Nolan. Wasn't his choice as a coach.
Snow is NOW clearly putting his stamp on the team. He is now solely in the crosshairs.
His freshman years are behind him, he learned on the job and made some mistakes (I STILL give him credit for going after Smyth..many others don't), and I am gonna give him the benefit of being on the upside of the learning curve here.
I give him HUGE marks for getting what ISS (International Scouting Services) called 5 of the top 30 players in the recent draft. Cuz TEAMS win championships, individual stars do not.
While it remains to be seen if any of these 5 picks pans out (or even Stamkos for that matter, yes?), I applaud Snow for demonstrating a plan and apparently going with it.
(Nolan DID NOT buy into the youth idea last year...at all).
It's always interesting in Islanderworld...
Even when you are two time zones away.
I was going to use Bill Torrey, but my better judgment said not to. Stamkos is going to have sooo much veteran help, like Mark Recchi and about 12 others somebody (obviously not Feaster) signed to make 4 scoring lines, that he will be hard to not pan out.
I guess you can officially say that Snow inherited a total mess, but I think this is his year to have to make the playoffs (and he won't). Nolan isn't about youth movements, which is surprising since he coached/ran a junior A team.
Sandy,
"Nolan isn't about youth movements, which is surprising since he coached/ran a junior A team."
Yeah, I know, that statement kind of befuddles me as well. But there is enough evidence from the last two years based on his reluctance to give guys like Tambellini, Neilsen and even Comeau (power play?) more playing time.
Oh well.
And I hope that Snow is not ultimately judged by whether they make the playoffs this year (although I think, at this point, they had a better shot with a "cooperative" Nolan on board than with any potential replacement-----I am wagering on Hartley).
Good thing I decided not to go for the two year season ticket package with this messed up front office situation. Bring in Don Cherry to coach! Grapes is younger than Jack McKeon was at Florida.
Jim Clark....
Yeah, I was thinking either Don Cherry or this guy.......

Dude's brilliant. Perfect hire to restore the luster to the Islanders.

Thank goodness for Kyle Okposo.
