Joe Buck calls out national pastime, is called out himself

180px-Joe_Buck.jpgInteresting TV/radio/blogosphere debate going on today in the wake of comments by Fox's Joe Buck in which he expresses his ambivalence about following baseball in its current state.

Awful Announcing follows that up with Skip Bayless' take on the situation.

With Buck set to call Bosox-Yanks this weekend, following up with him on this would have been a slam-dunk column for the Friday newspaper.

Two things, though:

1. I'm on vacation, and thus will not be writing a Friday newspaper column.

2. I agree with much of what he said, and now I don't have to write that and get all of Baseball City mad at me.

Whew. (Let's keep reason No. 2 just between us, OK?)

just another in a long line of reasons why Joe Buck should be removed from Fox Baseball

This explains why Joe Buck only does baseball games only once a mouth during the season from April to July.

Neil- I bet you didn't know I was in the running for the lead MLB announcer for Fox, just like I was in the running for Monday Night Football job. Both broadcasts would be a lot better with *my* contributions. -handwave-

Joe Buck needs to go away. He's clearly the worst announcer next to Chip Caray, and to openly admit that he's just not that interested in the sport he is paid to cover (when he's not botching calls in the NFL) is reprehensible. Get this guy off television and bring in someone with some genuine enthusiasm, not some silver spoon in his mouth.

I'm having visions of the very talented Kevin Burkhardt race through my head... I know he doesn't have enough major experience and would likely never even be considered (for good reason), but I would rather have a smooth talker who knows the game and has some personality call the games over Joe "my-dad's-coattails" Buck. There's got to be someone out there waiting to be plucked for this job.

Imagine if Vin Scully, Curt Gowdy, Bob Costas or Joe Garagiola pullied this when NBC had the Game of the Week. They would miss a game here and there, but not do a minimum of 10 games like Buck is doing. Bud Selig should demand that Buck be removed from the Fox Game of the Week and have him replaced with someone who wants to do baseball. Buck wants to be a late night talk show host. Let him be one and allow someone else to call the Fox Game of the Week.

So Joe Buck would rather sit at home and watch The Bachelorette?

And Neil Best agrees with him?

WOW.....Just WOW....

May I volunteer to finance a rose for you Neil, for you to give to Joe.
And then the both of you can sit around and watch The Bachelorette over a nice box of chocolates.
Maybe split a nice bottle of wine.
I just hope, for your sake, that they don't make the final show a 2 hour episode.

I shed a tear for Jack Buck today.
His son just pissed on his grave.

I have lost all respect for Joe Buck.
Perhaps he (and others) simply need a prescription for Short Attention Span Deficit.

Sad, sad sad.

Chris Russo was good at pbp when he and Mike did a Mets game a couple years ago. He also said it's something he'd like to do.

Most people hate their jobs so who cares? Just because he does a job most think they would love to have doesn't make it any different for him...

I agree with Mike from Queens - FOX should make a play for Kevin Burkhardt right away. He's got it all and he's going places. Charm, knowledge and a big smile - this guy is on the way up - and he would never say the things that Buck said. Kevin's a Jersey Shore Kid, not a spoiled brat like Buck.

I think i read that SNY has Burkhardt locked up for a few years. does anybody know if that is correct? SNY has the best broadcast team...I wish they also did the national games too.

I almost wonder if Buck is re-dedicating his attempts at landing in late-night again

FOX wanted KB as a sub and SNY didn't allow him too which I thought was completely unfair. They let Darling do his job on TBS, they let Keith have a lot of vacation, and Gary in the off-season usually does national radio for MLB.

Buck (along with Gil Santos and Bob Papa) were both clueless on the Manning to Tyree call but Papa and Santos at least had some emotion during the play whereas Buck treated the call like a pre-season play. FOX has the worst football announcers as most of them are baseball announcers while CBS has a boatload of announcers on their depth-chart. Unfair for a Giants and NFC fan.

Blame his mother and the Cardinals organization for starting his career from being a college baseball player legacy draft pick to #1 announcer for two major sports.
