Given all the unpleasantness this past week with the Mike Francesa/Chris Russo feud and the Giants' announcement that PSLs are on the way, wouldn't it be nice to send myself off on a brief hiatus with a heartwarming Sunday newspaper column about a father and son working in the sports media business, one in the Evil Empire, one in New York?
I thought it would.

wrong, nobdy and i mean nobody cares about this.go play some shuffleboard, maybe it will help you come up with some better material.
Bob? That would be Bob Feller.
Ted? That would be Ted Williams.
Duke? That would not be Duke Snider.
Bored? That would be me.
Note to early Sunday morning comment readers: Earlier I posted a comment in response to the two above in which I was overly sensitive and defensive and pointed out my other work over the past week.
I apologize now for doing so, and I struck them from the record. The curse and blessing of daily newspapers - and now minute-by-minute Internet journalism - is that each day and each article and each post must justify itself, because another one is about to come down the pike.
Thus . . . Let's focus only on this story.
I am quite comfortable with mixing in the occasional soft feature with my news reporting and critiquing, in this case one about a local sportscaster and his father, the latter of whom is the voice of the most important non-New York team in New York sports. It's a connection I was not aware of until recently, and I assumed most readers were not aware of until today and thus might find mildly interesting.
That's about it. Carry on. Thanks for reading.
Neil,
I find Duke to be a self serving bore on the air who by the way....made up his own nickname in college. That is a fact. Let's be honest, if it wasn't for his dad he would not be in the business.

Duke Castiglione is the worst sports anchor in NY and brings NOTHING to the table.
My article was a feature on him and his father, not a review of his broadcasting work. Sigh.
this is warning from your loyal readers,do not go off course
Sorry, Neil. I wasn't commenting on the article as much as I was expressing an opinion about the subject. I don't often get the chance to tell the world how I feel about Duke Castiglione, even if it didn't relate to the article you wrote.
Neil Baby
What happened today? The Super Bowl Champs go after the fans pocketbook and you do a soft feature on two people NO ONE cares about. Maybe 500 words on Jerry Remy next week.
I have not posted here in months but read you every day - BUT this was terrible
Next Sunday after he JETS announce they are asking for 500 million in PSL Money - Neil will do a story on Bob Costas and his son, Mickey who announces minor league hockey in Des Moines - terrible
Run this stuff by Mrs. Best please
Just catching up on the Sunday Column...and comments.
Don't disagree with any of you, including Mr. Watchdog.
If this had run on Father's Day, it would have been a different take....
Holy Cow!
This string of comments was not exactly how I envisioned wrapping up what had been easily one of the most productive weeks of my journalism career, but . . . if you dish out it you have to be able to take it, so I can and will.
Thanks to all for reading.
ok neil, now get back in the kitchen.
On second thought....just kidding that was a terrible column and a terrible subject
no mention of the Randy Johnson fiasco with the self monikered "Duke"
His daddy is good on the radio - Duke blows at his job
Terible Job Best - let's move on to next week where you will interview "Troy Aikman and his four year old son a profile in announcer courage by Neil Best"
You probably could have saved this blog entry with a connection to, and picture of, Charlize Theron.
Charlize Castiglione kinda has ring to it, no?
Just my opinion, from 2 time zones away.
As I indicated in a comment on the post that follows this one . . .
As of Monday morning I have printed more comments from angry fans in both the newspaper and the blog than any other sports media/business writer in New York. You could look it up.
I actually liked the feature -- I've been a big fan on Castiglione Sr. for some time thanks to the way WTIC bounced onto Long Island in the pre-XM era.
One issue with the folks in the sports department -- they ran a photo of Joe with Jerry Trupiano, who left (ie was dumped) by the Red Sox after a 14-year run following the 2006 season.
Doesn't O'B (Dave O'Brien -- Castiglione's current partner) merit a photo?
Actually Neil, New York is the Evil Empire. Boston's very own owner used it to explain the contreres Debacle.
