What a difference a year makes....
A year ago on Oct. 27, I was considering my Halloween party costume, the Rangers were 3-6-1 and needed a 6-1 streak to reach the 19-point mark by Nov. 10, their 17th game.
Alas, I'll be in Toronto for Halloween this week.
And the situation is different for the Rangers as well.
Tonight at the Coliseum, in the first of six meetings with the Islanders, the Eastern Conference-leading Rangers can hit the 19-point mark in their 12th game of the season with a win in regulation, overtime or a shootout.
So the arrow is certainly pointing up compared to last season, and that's without players such as Chris Drury really contributing on offense.
Yes, the power play is a concern, although two units---once they are set---should help, rather than the Jagr-led one last season.
So, before I tango out to the Island for the Rangers morning skate and some other errands, the first topic for the day is: Give us your two PP unit suggestions.
Newsday will have a sizeable contingent in Uniondale tonight, with yours truly, Greg Logan, Mark Herrmann, a live game blog, video, etc., so check in later and stay tuned all day...

PP 1:
Gomez, Naslund, Drury
Redden, Girardi
PP2:
Dubinsky, Zherdev, Voros
Kalinin, Rozsival
Notes: I think the first unit is finally starting to get some flow to it though they should def be shooting more. Drury is bound to put on in sooner or later. I love the stat that he has the most scoring chances on the team which at first glance looks like a bad stat but it shows that even in his slump he's still going hard every shift
this unit works best in 1 of 2 ways you let gomez create from behind the next/half boards or let Girardi get shots through from the point. Girardi has shown he is the best rangers d-man at doing such
the second power play unit knows what its doing. Dubi creates off the half boards they get it to the point Voros stands in front. the only problem with this unit is that it really only gets the last 30 seconds of the PP and it has by far been the better unit so far.
anywho just my opinion.
While I love the PS3 line, I think it's time to try something new:
Unit #1:
Naslund--Gomez--Zherdev
Redden--Rozsival
Unit#2:
Voros--Dubinsky--Drury
Mara--Girardi
5 on 3 Unit #1:
Voros---Gomez---Zherdev
Redden--Rozsival
5 on 3 Unit #2:
Naslund--Dubinsky--Drury
Mara--Girardi
Jeff, only problem...Dru and Voros do the same thing. They need to be separate, or at least the first line needs someone to stand in front...
Hmm...I guess just to be different and mix things up...
Unit #1:
Naslund--Gomez--Voros
Redden--Rozsival
Unit#2:
Zherdev--Dubinsky--Cally
Drury--Girardi
Kind of dumb; I wouldn't really do these, but just throwing something different out there...
Kevo: on that Unit 2 i would rather Zherdev at the point as his shot is much more explosive. Or even Cally as he pretty much has shown he will shoot from anywhere.
Draxen: True. I was kind of just throwing out a forward to play the point. Dru does have a pretty good shot. Thought Z would be better playmaker elsewhere, plus Dru is better defensively. But either way, like your thinking too.
I would also like to throw Prucha in there somewhere, as well. Maybe see if he can spark something magical up from his Freshman year.
UNIT #1
Zherdev Gomez Dubinksy
Redden Girardi
UNIT #2
Naslund Drury Dawes
Rozzival Mara
That first unit is sick and Dubi is fully capable of being that player to be in front of the net to get those garbage goals. I think that putting Zherdev with Gomez on the power play is are best chance to score because scotty will always find you wherever you are on the ice. It opens up the shots from the point and Redden and Girardi have some great accurate shots. Girardi always manages to get that puck to the net.
The reasoning behind my 2nd Unit is because Naslund is really the only true sniper left on the team after that Dawes has a wicked shot but he has to prove himself more. I think by putting Dawes on the second power play unit it would give him some more confidence and Drury and Dawes have chemisrty. Rozi gives us a big threat from the point and if Mara could ever hit the net he would lead all defensemen with goals. His shot is by far the hardest shot on the team.
Against the Islanders we need to keep our composure. They always come out hard against us and it's important we don't get ahead of ourselves. They are going to take a lot of penalties so it's very vital we chip in on the power play. Let's not take dumb penalties and we should be able to take care of businees. This could be our hardest opponent in the division believe it or not. The Islanders are down right now so we can't give them any hope. We are coming off a big win against the Penguins and the Islanders are coming off a very bad loss. It's going to be a tough game but if the Rangers play their game they should be able to win this one easily. So the keys to this game are
1.Don't take dumb penalties
2. Do well on special teams
3. Get a lot of shots to the net and be hungry for those rebounds becuase they are going to be there.
4. Keep your Composure and be smart.
My prediction is 3-1 Rangers
Idk if anyone read my post before the Rangers played Columbus but I called the Rangers winning twice this weekend and so far so good. Oh Yea Drury is getting on the board tonight.
Lets Go Rangers!!!
I like those lines adam. Plus, (I don't know if you realized when you made them up), that second unit has Dawes to Naslund...kind of like Gomez to Zherdev. Dawes is a good passer. If they gave him a bigger responsibility, like Gomez on the first unit, he could do well. Like those lines a lot. Might dent Naslund's confidence a little, but he's a professional so I don't think he'd care.
Agree, Drury gets a PP rebound goal tonight.
I'll be there tonight, sitting four rows back, wearing my white Lundqvist jersey. Can't wait, Let's Go Rangers!

Thanks bud for the feedback. Yea to be perfectly honestly with you I didn't really realize that until you mentioned it. I wish it would be 6:30 already so I can watch the Pregame then the game at 7. Yea I think Naslund will be happy as long as he is on the power play. I mean on some nights the 1 unit will be clicking and some nights the 2nd unit will be clicking. I think he just wants to do whats in the best interest of the team. The guy exemplifies the definition of a team player.
Totally agree. He'll still get his goals, and if it helps the team win, I'm all for it, but I know everyone on the team is all for it. We don't have any "ME" guys that need their stats or attention.
Also agree that I need this game to start....so sick of having to pay attention to the World Series for my sports fix at night.

The failure of the Rangers PP is less about personnel and more about strategy, in my opinion. The Hockey Rodent has it right. If you look at the most successful powerplays around the league (and even back to better Ranger units), they had one thing in common: bombs from the point.
The Rangers have plenty of guys that can transport the puck into the zone, perhaps the best in the league in Scott Gomez. They also have guys with a nose for the net who are willing to do the dirty work and have the hands to make things happen with rebounds (this means you Captain Drury). They also have weapons on the blueline, but from some reason choose not to use them properly. My lines:
Naslund-Gomez(set-up man)-Drury(screener)
Redden-Mara(shooter)
Voros(screener)-Dubinsky-Zherdev(set-up man)
Girardi(shooter)-Staal
Notice the lack of one very high-paid defenseman on these units. If Mr. Rozsival doesn't want to unload point rockets, he can stay on the bench when the Rangers are up a man. This does mix up the even strength D-pairs a bit, which could be problematic.
The place will be majority Ranger fans tonight.
My only suggestion is using Zherdev on the point. A lot of teams do this (putting one their best forwards on the point) i.e. the Flyers with Richards, the Capitals with Ovechkin and the Senators with Alfredsson. What can it hurt?
I would put Rosy on the point, because he is the most accurate to the net from the point position....I also like Girardi as well...Mara can't hit the ocean (yet) and Redden seems to prefer a pass rather than shot-gotta get the puck to the net, not wide of the net- ON NET, otherwise it doesen't really work does it! Zherdev, with his soft hands can better be utilized in the proxitimity of the net rather than outside the perimeter, IMO of course. Tonight, gonna hear a lot of "Let's Go Rangers", and I figure there will be at least 2 scaps tonight \_ _
