Sunday Papers: Sjostrom Signs (UPDATED)

Freddie Sjostrom, the winger who was acquired from Phoenix at the trade deadline last season, has accepted the team's $840,000, 1-year, qualifying offer, according to a report in the Swedish newspaper Expressen. I've not been able to independently confirm, but assume it's accurate because I'm familiar with the reporter.

UPDATE: It's official. "Haven't signed the papers yet, but we agreed on the one-year contract," Sjostrom responded in an e-mail. "Nice to have it done. Looking forward to play in the Big Apple upcoming season!!"

Sjostrom, 25, had been weighing a two-year deal for less money per and had until Aug. 4 to decide. He had two goals and two assists in 18 games in a limited role on the Rangers and 10 goals and nine assists in 51 games with the Coyotes. In 279 games over four seasons, the former first-round pick (No. 11 overall) in 2001, has 34 goals and 41 assists.

That's excellent news. Glad to have him back, although it creates way too many forwards on the roster.

There are waaaaaaaaaaaay too many forwards on the roster, which actually gives us something to look forward to, because there definitely be a trade coming.

Please don't tell me that Shanny has signed with the Rangers, that would slow them down to a crawl.

Even the Shanny of 5 years ago would be a welcome addition but not this one.

now trade him. We got better players in Anisimov, Korpikoski, Jamtin, Moore and Byers.

the thing that bothers me with shanny and athletes in general is that they sometimes feel that they are being a man by playing hurt. when they are hurt, they shouldnt play and drag the team down. last season, shanny hurt his knee, wrongly compensated for it and stressed other parts of his body doing so.
you cant do that when there are other players, younger players able to skate in the injured persons place.
tiger woods can do it, but he plays in a non-team sport.

I'd like to see Sather sign some of our young guys to some long term low money contracts like the Islanders have done with guys like Gervais and Neilson.

Our salary cap 2009-10 looks rather scary and getting some young guys locked up for low money instead of 1 years deals should be something to start thinking about very seriously.

Could Sather be after Mike Knuble?

Hey Ranger Fans,

I wrote up a blog today about some of the Rangers youth guys who will be playing big roles. Go and check it out at Isles Nation. I understand it is an Islanders site, but I am an Atlantic Division blogger and I think you will like the piece of writing. Check it out and leave a comment or a message! Take it easy

Shanny has signed a year plus an option year tonight, per espn, financial terms not disclosed, hear its 4.5 mil per.

yeah espn never reports anything first in the hockey world

I agree, there are waaaaaaaaaaay too many Forwards and I am sure sather is looking for a D'man who'll clear the crease for Hendrik...I'm a big Shanny Fan but think he will slow down the team...I still favor his leadership qualities and the young guy's can learn a lot from him...he just might be good to have around this year for that reason alone. The signing of Sjostrom I have mixed feelings about...the question is: is he an asset to our team?...does he play both ends of the ice and on a consistent basis?...these are the intangibles that will set apart who makes the team and who doesen't.

TSN just reported Florida signed RFA Jay Bouwmeester to a one year contract.

Now there is a guy we could use and one who could be a co-anchor of the back line for years to come.

Prucha, Callahan or Sjostrom, a prospect and a draft pick?

John,

I love Bouwmeester, but, he is a UFA after this season and they are talking in terms of 6.5 million a year for him, long term and I just don't see us having the room under the cap to sign him to something like that.

Our cap gets scary after this coming season.

and Fla will want a kings ransom for him even as a rental
