Staal endorses roster makeover

I would have posted a disclaimer to the imposter who threw out the Sundin stuff (grow up or I'll request that you get the boot, knucklehead, fair warning), but I was chatting with Marc Staal over at the Rangers training complex, where he's down from Thundar Bay as one of the players working at the annual youth camp.

The story will be online and in tomorrow's paper, but here's some excerpts.

At the end of the season, Staal was aware that Jagr, Straka, Shanahan and Avery could end up elsewhere.
"You knew they (management) couldn't keep everybody, so you figured some guys were gonna leave," Staal said. Like many hockey players---and fans---when the free-agent deadline arrived, Staal hunted for breaking news on his computer.

"On July first and second, I kept checking on the internet, just like everybody else," Staal said. "I talked to (fellow defenseman Dan) Girardi and we were just going through what was happening to try to figure out what was going on."

"I'm excited about the guys we got," he said. "Redden's an All-Star, a great player, he'll really be good. I know Naslund from watching him when I was growing up (in Thunder Bay, Ontario). He's got experience, he's been on the power play."

Asked about the critics who believe Naslund, at 35, is no longer the force he once was, Staal said, "Maybe a change of scenery will be good for him."

Staal also was pleased with the return of defenseman Michal Rozsival and surprised by the Tyutin-Backman trade.

Gotta run to cover the Mets-Phils with some of the Newsday gang. Check out the entire story later...

I'd like to take a survey please.

If you were going to buy a new Rangers jersey tomorrow, which player would you put on the back? (or would you put your own name and number?)

I'd say Staal

Staal is good as is Dubinsky. I guess it depends if your an offense or defense guy.

Does anyone know of any discount websites to buy a jersey?

Dubinsky for me.

Girardi is my favorite

I guess I'd say Zherdev, only because I like the #13, if he wears it with the Rangers, like Sergei Nemchinov, Valeri Kamensky, Bob Brooke and Richard Scott (remember him?).

Hey Rangers Fans,

Come on over to my Atlantic Division blog, which is located at Isles Nation. Although it is an Isles website and I am an Islanders fan, it will have articles posted on all five teams throughout the Atlantic Division. Come read up on the teams you will be seeing the most this year and what might be happening in their area of the hockey world. If you get the chance, leave a comment or shoot me an e-mail as well, just trying to get some good hockey conversation going on!

I think mine would be Staal, I am waiting to see if he takes #14 if/ when Shanny doesn't come back. I love Lundqvist but think it comes across as a little "bandwagonish" to have the #30 jersey, kind of like all the ladies wearing the #87 in black and gold right now.

As soon as Staal gets a little more comfortable and starts playing with some snarl then his jersey is going to be a sell out.

Always hated the idea of having a jersey with "your name" on it.

Now that I think about it...a Dawes jersey with "Black Magic" on the back would be pretty sweet. I think I just came up with my Christmas present lol.

#22 and Bobby Rousseau. Is he still available?

As far as Hockey Jerseys go, try www.coolhockey.com or www.amazon.com or www.teamdepot.com
As far as what # I would wear....I might go w/Staal, but I'll keep my authentic 3rd jersey w/Messier on it...until someone impresses me as much as Mess did. I have a better question for you all: Who would be seriously interested in a road trip to MTL or TOR this year???? I already passed this by Steve and he seems interested if it fits his schedule. We have a Sat TOR Game, so that would work...I figure AMTRAKING it to TOR.

Does Staal have a thing for #14?

Why would A Rags fan want a jersey of any of these bums, no Jagr, no Shanny with his cute self, no Avery and his Hutzpah, we are NOTHING now.

Burt,

Staal wore #14 in Sudbury for most, if not all, of his junior career. I just figured he might want to go back to it if Shanny is off the team. Its really the only reason I didn't get his jersey this past year. I'll give another player until around Christmas to impress me more than Staal otherwise I will be wearing a #14 Staal jersey for the next decade or so.

I'm a Jersey boy, so I'm waiting until Sanguinetti busts into the line-up.
Cherepanov would be cool too.

I cant believe someone mentioned Richard Scott. He was moronic for taking on Cairns and look where it landed him.

wow, you guys have some good memories. I just watched the Scott/ Cairns fight on youtube and have absolutely no idea who that kid was. I would have no idea who you were even talking about. I remember Cairns being a Ranger (I actually met him when they had their training camps up in glens falls, ny) but I have no memory of Scott at all. Was that pre-season...any details about how or why rangers had that guy and for how long?

back to the jersey question. If Zherdev goes wild on the score sheet, shows some heart and signs a long term deal then I do believe I would grab his #13.

I got a Ranger jersey with the name of my favorite all time Ranger player, Andy Bathgate.

As far as this rebuilt team. I'm hoping for the best. Too soon to make an evaluation. Hope the practice up here in the North Country. It would be great to see them and how the pieces fit together.

Anybody know what their preseason schedule is?

Steve, like most of the other sites, don't allow anyone to post without requiring e-mail verification and register the password. If they use a name not registered or try to impersonate someone else, That way, nobody can impersonate anybody else and I think that will drive away all the trolls.

That said, I did that once on here trying to embarrass a troll but my strategy backfired and dropped that idea permanently. :)

if the rangers played mon in the playoffs last yr i was gonna try to go. i think it would be an amazing time.

Correction on last post:

If they try to impersonate someone else, they can't get on unless they type in the right password and if they use a name not registered, will have to verify e-mail first.

Don't know how much of a software upgrade it would entail but if you did it, I think all the trolls would be on the outside looking in.

Joke are you new to hockey? you can find almost any hockey player on hockeydb.com

I think Scott retired due to concussion issues.

Joke,
My old lady said the exact same thing about a Zherdev jersey last night. Hank is 100% a bandwagon chick thing. The wifey has 2 autographed in frames. (She's a little wacky for the Swed)

Ok so far...
3 Staal's
1 Girardi,
1 Zherdev,
1 Bobby Sanguinetti,
1 Bathgate (very, very cool)
2 Dubinsky's.

I'm surprised that no one typed in Drury, Gomez, Naslund, Redden or Roszival.
I'll give it another day.

(from the current roster please) ~

Thanks for everyone's input so far.

Burt McGert.

BaltimoreBlueshirt,
I live in Arnold MD half the year. We should road trip to NYC for a game or two this season. What do you think?

I actually have to get a new one, thanks Avery.

I'm prob getting Dubinsky

I've still got my Sergei "Sarge" Nemchinov #13 from my younger days, loved that guy, tough as nails. It must have shrunk though, for some reason it seems a little tight.....LOL.

For this generation, while Hank is the best, I agree. His is a chick jersey. (Burt, my wifey is the same for him. She'll read a magazine or find anything else to do while the games on, but if they interview Hank, the world stops for those 4 minutes).

I think a #24 Cally or a #17 Dubi, love the grit they bring. Even a #27 Mara but I'm not sure how long he's going to be here for. So, to give one vote, I'd go with #17 Dubi.

I already have a Drury jersey, I may have to out and grab a C though for it, we shall see about that, And already had a Vancouver Nasland.

Although I like the kids, I'm going to wait. I prefer the classics...Graves, Richter, Gretzky, Messier, Leetch (Yep the retired Numbers).

Since no one else has taken him, I'll get #30 Lundqvist jersey.

drury for sure...

ive wanted him on the rangers since his rookie year. i think he will become the captain and that we are going to see a lot of clutch hockey from him over the next couple of years. the best is yet to come when it comes to drury.

my second choice is a 3-way tie between rich pilon, "mary" hossa and dale puritan...

i agree with others who think that your own name on a jersey is douche-baggy... i saw this tool in a restaurant once with a jersey on that said Stanley '07.

best thing about getting your own name on a Rangers jersey though is that Sather can never trade you.

Very Very true dude, and for older worn out talent either!

Steve,

you should have asked him about the departure of his fellow bubblegumgang members. he is the only one left now.

...............................................................................................

Well Bob, No I am not new to hockey and you could have used your amazing internet skills to answer your own question. I clearly stated that I met Cairns in Glens Falls during a rangers training camp. A quick look at hockeydb.com shows that Cairns started with the rangers around '93. So even if that was my first year watching hockey (which it was not) I would still be a fan for over 14 years or so. The issue was that I had no memory of Richard Scott even after watching him on youtube. So I was impressed with the other posters who not only knew him as wearing #13 but also "effigy" recalling the fight etc. Truth be told, I started watching the rangers during the '86-'87 season. Guys like Turcotte, Broten, King, Nicholls etc. I consider myself to be a very knowledgeable ranger and hockey fan...thus my surprise when a player was named that I was not familiar with. That's about it...so with the 5 minutes I have before I leave for work I simply asked those guys to fill me in on Scotts history...when was he drafted or traded for etc...I just didn't care to do the research at that time. Bob, you were doing so well for the past few weeks. Your posts were sincere and logical and then you go and post something like that...tsk tsk.

Burt,

My wife is a Prucha fan, although she does think Hank is cute.

Brian,

Sergei is one of my all time favorite rangers. He was quiet yet determined as hell. Awesome team guy and always seemed so nice during interviews. Much respect for "sarge".

iceycup,

I thought I was stretching it with the term "bandwagonish" but you take the cake with "douche-baggy"...lol.

I'm still sticking w/my # 11 Messier Jersey...at least until one of these guy's show me they deserve their # on my back...I do think it will end up being Staal...he's come a long way in a short time...so glad we drafted down for him-what a find!!!!!
Another jersey I have say's "CHAMPS" on top and # "94"......a fabulous # for a most unbelievable and memorable year.

I'm sticking with the one and only Stephane Matteau's #32.. can't be beaten!! Although, my close second would be Darren Turcotte's #8

Hey everyone,

15% off sale at the NHL shop website for a limited time only. Get your jerseys now!

Bobby S. (for Sanguinetti) is my jersey. Hope he gets a low number.

Bobby Rousseau, #15 in a Montreal jersey, except there was no name on the back of jerseys when he played there. And no helmet on anyone's head, except for Red Berenson's apostasy.

Bathgate (9) and Ratelle (19) are my two all-time favorite Rangers. I remember attending the game which was Ratelle's NHL debut at the Garden, and getting into a debate with the guy sitting next to me, who insisted Ratelle was "too soft" and would never make it in the NHL. What I was seeing were some of the smoothest, most creative anticipatory passes I had ever seen an NHL centerman make. Interesting how people can see the same game and the same players so differently, according to personal bias.

I heard Sanguinetti wore #22 as a tribute to leetch
