Rangers advance in five
Still in Newark.
Just finished the piece for the paper.
Could this be the changing of the guard in the metro area? It erases the 2006 sweep, for sure.
Brodeur couldn't steal a game.
And Lundqvist's save on Madden was the tipping point tonight. It's a whole other game---and series---if Madden scores.
I'm sure some of you finally exhaled when Dubinsky scored the empty-netter.
Enjoy.
As Gomez said, it gets ten times harder now.
Swing by tomorrow...

gwn,
gomer is also earning his "overpayed" contract in the 1st year of it...he and drury have been better then advertised IMO
arthur and steve thatns for the blog.
rangers were the better team and they should rule the city for the next few yrs. they have alot of good young players, a system, will have some cap room, etc.
brodeur is probably the best of all time but he is a classless guy and a bad loser...
TJ...wonder if Lou is finally kicking himself for not getting off his wallet and signing Gomer long term...Gionta must be pissed as well, Gomez leaves town his offensive production falls, and so will his paycheck.
Chico Resch said in his postgame that he expects the Devils to go after a playmaking centre in the offseason. What a brilliant observation!
Zip, what did everyone in the press box think of the penalty shot call? Looked like a tie - feet and stick at the same time but I would not have given him the shot. Then again, I'm a Rangers fan and not a referee.
They swallowed the whistle big time today. The Devils had 2 penalties, both in the first period, and should have had about 8 more, 6 on Avery alone!

zip,
actually it is possible for the rangers to start round 2 at home. with the penguins in already, the rangers would need both philly and the bruins to win their respective series for home ice in round 2. philly is up 3-1 and boston is down 3-2 to montreal currently.
game 1 still could very well be at the garden
Please, PLEASE
I would love for the Bruins and Flyers to win and we get the Flyers in the next round starting at MSG.
That series would be nasty, NASTY
The Flyers have their own Marty, the chants wouldn't have to stop!
Alex Bourret is back with the Pack after being out awhile with an injury.
Looks like he has picked up where he left off in the playoffs last year, 2 assists in the first two games.
The series is tied 1 - 1, the Pack lost in Double OT Thursday night.
hey Zip, I have always enjoyed watching marty for the last 15 years but i have no respect for him after not shaking averys hand. Its the playoffs and its about leadership and sportsmanship. What do you thinkg??????? Its like the mangini and belicheck deal. ..
I think Brodeur was more embarrassed that he let Sean Avery get to him like he did.
He was probably also embarrassed that not one of his teammates did anything about it.
What did the Devils in was that they didn't respect Sean Avery as a hockey player and he burned them on the scoreboard in this series and then last night they constantly ran him all night and shadowd him as if he was Wayne Gretzky. it opened up the ice for our other guys.
Marty refused to shake hands with Avery because he knew Sean got the better of him.
btw - not to dampen the excitement of the win but what was Backman doing in the corner on the when the Devils were scoring there first goal in front of the net?
This guy is horrible. I hope I am wrong but I am sure this guy is going to cost us a game at a crucial point.
pls replace backman with strudwick..he better physically. Colton Orr hurry back pls. we need a bit more toughness in there.
The discipline displayed by all the Rangers was impressive. It takes alot to turn the other cheek in the playoffs but that is exactly what is necessary to win. Teams that take poor retaliatory penalties lose. Teams that refused to take a hit to move the puck lose. The Rangers were definitely the team that was more willing to absorb a hit t om ove the puck and certainly the team more willing to stay disciplined. Last night the Rangers wouldn't let the Devils suck them into the little scrums after the whistles and the Devils gave up on this strategy. And Hats off to Avery for his constantl willingness to take the hits that the Devils kept goading him with. Sean never gave in and took any stupid penalites. The 4th line also for the few minutes they received played very effectively. Overall this was a superb team effort and gives me a strong confidence that they are going to be a handful for any opponent. This second round sees the Rangers in much better shape than last season regardless of the opponent.
We definitely need Colton Orr to be healthy for either the Penguins or Flyers.
Backman is going to keep playing folks.
Once again the negative nells show up and actually bitch about Backman. The reality is that NO D-men have a perfect game in any game period! The guy played consistently well for 5 games as did the rest of the D-men. Overall with the Devils selling out with a 3 man forecheck and their D constantly pinching, our D-men had very few turnovers considering the kamikaze efforts by the Devils. NO team left is going to employ a 3 man forcheck, you can bet on it. SO the Ranger D as a whole played very well in this series and if you can't recognize that it is simply an inability to understand the game. Mistakes are made, no teams play perfect in their own zone, it is the neutral zone that you must eliminate turnovers in. The Rangers blocked the shooting lanes and over 5 games their coverage assignments were kept with great regularity. Don't forget that only a flike OT goal allowed the Devils to avoid a sweep. Quit the bitching, Rangers won in 5!
100% agree, msg4ever
Backman is very mobile and plays the puck very well in the offensive zone.
Do you guys realize how slow Malik and Strudwick look when and if the Rangers play the Penguins or the Canadiens?
Backman is going to keep playing, there is absolutely no doubt.
Was at the game last night, after the penalty shot you could literally hear the sigh of relief from the thousands of rangers fans there. Jagr is a freaking beast, and anyone who doesn't want him back is stupid.
luckily Avery wasn't injured, and the NYR won. That was not the intentions of the nhl, it's refs, and their losing opponent.
P.S. I know this has been said hundreds of times, but the progression of the young guys has been remarkable. For the first time in 10, 11, 12? years i am excited about our future. Even the bitter devils fans were commenting on them.
Backman does suck. Why is it wrong to point that out. He is quicker and more agile than Malik and Strud but he makes alot of terrible decisions with the puck. And god forbid he take a hit to make a pass. Soft like butter. Wait till Pittsburgh get's a hold of him. You'll be singing a different tune then. Great series! Dubi, Cally, Henrik all unbelievable. Alot of heart from the rest too. Like Gomez say's " It gets 10 times harder now". Hope their up to it. Marty is a B$#CH!!!!!!!!!
Tickets to game 5 - $120.00
Beer and a hot dog - $120.00
Hearing the Devils cry and make excuses for sucking - PRICELESS
DK1994 - It's good to see someone is seeing more than just the final score.
Msgforever and Dude - This guy makes one comment about backman and you guys start with the "Stop the bitching" BS. Your the real bitches always crying about peoples opinions. Wah Wah Wah. Go do the dishes or something.
Yessssssss we put that classless jerk on the links after 5 games of being out played by Hank. Can't believe he didn't shake avery's hand, well i can but it's totally classless. I remember whem Claude L put draper into the boards and there was a war the rest of the series everyone still shook his hand. But the broadcasters from canada especially the frenc ones think of martina as a god which is so wrong in so many ways. We were lucky even with the puck going in after hitting dubi because it could have really injured him by hitting him in the head. I will say that the way they played in the third period had me nervous and i thought they should put more pressure on the devils but it worked so it was a grest plan. Can anyone say anything more than Calli is awesome!!!! Well some rest and wait to see to see who they get next.
"Msgforever and Dude - This guy makes one comment about backman and you guys start with the "Stop the bitching" BS. Your the real bitches always crying about peoples opinions. Wah Wah Wah. Go do the dishes or something."
they get paid with used jockstraps (Backman's is their favorite) to crack down on anybody who criticizes anything Rangers related.
when did I say stop the bitching?
all I said was that Backman is going to continue to play because Strudwick and Malik are both too slow.
damn idiots
so, hey Bob and Kocur, why don't y'all go eff yourselves?
and you, Bob, get a job already, it's embarrassing.
