Live from Toronto: Valiquette gets the nod

He prevailed in the 3-2 shootout win here on Nov. 10---a game overshadowed by the Sean Avery-Darcy Tucker rumbles---and goaltender Steve Valiquette, who was born in nearby Etobicoke, will start again tonight against the Leafs. As reported here yesterday, backup Andrew Raycroft will be in goal for Toronto.

Henrik Lundqvist will start tomorrow at home against the Canadiens, and presumably, at least two of the three on the western Canada road trip.

Brandon Dubinsky (flu) didn't skate and is questionable. Marcel Hossa would likely dress if Dubinsky can't go, unless D Jason Strudwick moves up to the fourth line. Brendan Shanahan (hamstring), who skipped practice yesterday, skated and will play.

More later...

Definitely a dumb move by Renney sending Dawes down especially with Dubinsky under the weather and Shanny nursing a bad hamstring.

On another matter, trade proposal from me: Columbus needs a center, send them Betts. Moore can be bought up to fill that spot. Younger, stronger with some touch for scoring. Think Columbus would part with Kiesla for Betts? We'll even give them Hossa.

Betts makes 615K for the next two seasons then is a UFA. Think Columbus can carry that. Kiesla makes 1.050M 1.450M 1.650M and 2.250M, this season and the next three. Becomes a UFA at the end of the 2010 season. Then release Malik and/or Hossa. That should free up some cap space for the additional 1M for this trade. Sather should pitch this one to Columbus to see if they bite.

lenny it looks like Sather is forcing Renney to keep the payroll down. It's been a rare occasion they've had 23 available, and were not so bright in going with 20 for too long. I'd like to see Hollweg on Prucha's line. It's about time Renney gets the 'kid' protection to regain his confidence & scoring. There are a lot of inconsistencies in Renney-speak. Dawes needs to be on the 2nd line, while Prucha's role has been changed for the worse. He's been put in hockey scoring limbo, some of his own doing. But the TEAM has in no way protected nor helped him to get back to his potential. Way too many want to see him traded, to be haunted for years to come. Get him the right linemates, & you'll see a 30 goal scorer again. But the whole O has struggled with the D first mentality while not standing up for each other. Grit, speed & heart go a long way in the NHL. A little line juggling could create a REAL 4 line attack, or at least 3 with a shut down 4th.

No, I'm north, in the Lake George/Glens Falls area (Queensbury), about an hour to drive. Just about all parkway so not too bad, about an hour's drtive. Other than gas and parking fee at the train station, only commuting expense.

You mean east don't you? West that distance would put you in the Hudson River. :)

Did the links work for you?

Nuts. Now Valiquette is also saddled with buying tickets for people he doesn't even like!

Mmmm penny candy! Used to love the round, coin-like red hots that were actually pretty sweet and swedish-fishy. And ropes of licorice which I still seek out at Williams' Candy at Coney. And while it wasn't penny candy, per se, it was cheap: The round tube of quartered and rolled-up corrugated inch-thick licorice, either red or black, that was sold twisted up in cellophane. Also a Swedish product, I believe. And I still recall the jingle for Choo-Choo Charlie and his Good n Plentys. And Black Jack gum. Jeez Steve, I'm ruining my dinner just strolling down Candy Memory Lane! But my dentist'll thank you if I make a run down to Economy Candy for teh fix....

Yeah. East. I figured you were in Mass b/c isn't there a train station somewhere up there? Or, is the closest one Rensselaer?

Finally! There is the dominance they show on paper manifesting itself on the ice! Finally, finally, finally. Keep it up. Keep the puck in the back of the net. Ooooh Darcy Tucker broke the sutout! He's my hero!

Lenny,
you go to the open practice in Lake George beginning of last season? I did. Shanny gave my daughter a broken stick with a date on it...I suppose that means it was used in a preseason game? Then he came out and signed the sucker. When he gets inducted that thing is going to bring my baby her first tuition payment. Thanks Shanny!!!

See what a great come from behind victory can do for a team?? Last year we played dominant after beating the blues in the 2-0 deficit going into the third shootout win. This year its the Carolina game. Lets keep playing like this boys!! (P.S to all you GOmez haters in the beginning of the year ... where are you now??)

If you think Columbus would give up Kiesla for Betts you're crazy. Usually in trades you have to give up something to get something. You can't just pick a random guy and think you're going to get someone back.

I am not sure who "Kiesla" is, but no, the Blue Jackets are not giving up 25 year old , 6-3 215 pd, defenseman Rostislav Klesla for Blair Betts. A big LOL!!!

you are a smart guy lennynyr

Great game tonight. Dominant from th opening puck drop til the end, it's nice to have a game where I never feel nervous the whole night.

Lets do it again tomorrow.

Dan, there are stations closer but different schedules which doesn't work well with getting to MSG and back on the same day. Got to go to Rensaullear to do that!

Guys, we are still ahead if we throw in Prucha and/or Hossa. Nice to see Prucha scoring two goals tonight but Dawes can definitely replace him.

Betts, Prucha and/or Hossa for Kiesla, will that work??

Sorry, make that Klesla!!

lennnyr,

Seriously dude, if you don't want those players, what makes you think the Blue Jackets want them?

KLESLA is the kind of defenseman who gets 25 minutes a night, you aren't going to get a guy like him by giving the Blue Jackets all the scraps you don't want.

For instance, last night the Blue Jackets won 4-1.

Who scored the winning goal?

Klesla.

TOI: 23 minutes and 18 seconds. PP and SH Time.

He was the 4th overall pick in 2000.

lennnyr, please tell me that you still believe we can get him by throwing all the scraps you don't like to Columbus.

Hossa is a scrap, Betts is a good PK and has some value, Prucha, even though off to a bad start, has 50 goals for the previous 2 seasons definitely has value. Prucha can be replaced by Dawes.

Didn't Brooks indicate that there was talk on the table between the two teams, which was just Prucha for Foote or Klesla?

I don't know if we can get him, it would definitely be a deal in our favor, depends how bad Columbus needs a center and how easily they can replace Klesla.

Remember Middleton for Hodge? Sometimes one sided deals can be pulled off. McKenney for Prentice was another one!!

Yeah, well if Fergie was the GM of the Jackets, maybe.

Put it this way, if the Rangers are going to acquire Klesla, we are going to have to give up someone we are going to miss or hate to give up, like Sanguinetti or Cherepanov.

I don't think that would happen, and I don't think, if there is a trade between the two teams, that it is going to involve Klesla.

Since when does Brooks have any idea anyway what is going on in Sather's head?

Nobody ever knows what's is going on in Sather's head.

I never believe one rumor about the Rangers because Glen is never going to let anyone know if something is about to happen.

If the Rangers make a deal, I guarantee it will involve players that never were spoke of in the NY Post or Hockeybuzz.

On Avery this season
11-6 with him in
8-13 with him out

On Avery last season
17-12 with him in
25-21 with him out

Since Avery acquired
28-18 with him in (win 61%)
33-34 with him out (win 49%)

Kings record with Avery last season
18-37

I know alot of you guys don't like him or his antics but those numbers can be ignored. It is abundantly clear that he isn't a highly skilled player and doesn't put up huge numbers. However, what he does is make NYR play well. For some reason, THIS team with Sean wins more, and without him can't make par. Since the beginning of last season they win 12% more games with him in the line-up. In addition, it can be argued that a golf course bound team turned the season around upon his arrival. I know Glen is high on Chereponov but JJ Jr isn't going to be such a dominant player that he will make up for 68's meager season and 16's catalytic spark together. It just isn't going to happen. Glen needs to start working on the contract and drop hints to Sean that an extension and/or raise is going to depend on his performance.

Sorry that 49% number is since the beginning of last season

Dan, did the links work for you?

taking a chance on Dawes being better than Prucha isn't exactly smart management. Really it's kind of silly.
Gift... horse... mouth...

Oh and did Betts put one in his OPPONENTS net last night? Nicely done. Since last season NYR is 6-4 when he buries it.

Yeah Lenny. trying to convince the ol lady it would be a good card to have. We just sat in traffic for 4 hours comoing back from that big parking lot in the atlantic and she was saying, "From now on we are taking the train."

Avery reminds me a lot of Matthew Barnaby!!

Yeah. Same type of player but Avery is having a greater impact on the Rangers than Mathew had on ANY team he played on. The Sabres weren't winning with or without him. His presence didn't make a significant difference either way...unless he was fighting Rob Ray on the team bus.
