Devs ink Kevin Weekes

First Rachunek crosses the river, now Weekes. No details on deal yet....

Question:

How comfortable should the Rangers feel with Valiquette/Montoya behind Henrik?

I'm predicting right now that they will have a veteran backup signed before the trade deadline or sooner, for the playoffs...

Your thoughts?

Steve, agree with you about a vet backup in goal. Welcome back & best of luck with the rehab and recovery.

Playoffs? A little early to predict that eh? Maybe those Vicatin's haven't worn off yet.

Well, Don C, we finished 6th overall in the conference last year and are A LOT better team now than we were.

Playoffs is not the goal here, a Stanley Cup is.

When will the NY Rangers sign Henrik? and for how long? Prucha is not worth that money.

I agree - Rangers will pick up a veteran (at least to come to training camp) maybe they go for Clemenson

Prucha isn't worth 1.6 million a year????

Why not?

Rangers should go for Aebischer as a backup goalie

bring back Jussi!

Chip,

not a bad idea

2-years, $1.375-million for Weekes

Jim - I just figure he's played here (well at times) shouldn't cost a fortune, and has playoff experience from two years ago with Edmonton - besides, if something were to happen to Hank and he were out for a while Montoya would be in the pipes - but for playing once every 2 weeks or so Jussi would be a good fit here.

Jussi? Interesting thoughts indeed. He's a solid backup without a doubt. Much better than Valiquette if ya ask me. I haven't seen Montoya play so I'm not sure if he'd be ready to get in there at the NHL level. Although, I always like to see the young kids get a chance, so I have no problem using him as a backup if the Rangers can't get a good deal on a veteran.

Steve, good to see you back. I wondered what happened to you. I was begining to think you were kidnapped by aliens or you hopped on Barbaro and road off into the netherlands. Well, anyway glad to see you back and feeling better!!

You were 3 points from not making the playoffs last year James. And shoot high on Lundquist and the Rags are a 10th place team tops. I say 83 points next year.

Don C,

We will be playing the AHL Islanders 8 times next season.

We will achieve 100 points with our eyes closed.

Good try though. That shoot high on Henrik thing is quite clever.

Not a solid move for Weekes, is it? He can offer more than 12 games a year (if he even gets that). He is a pro and will take a seat for the team, but don't you think he should've signed for the same money in St. Louis, where he's needed?

Rucchin - at this stage I think Weekes looked at it a couple of ways:

1. Money was probably the same no matter where he signed

2. Doesn't have to sell his place from last year - can still hang out in the city and what not

3. He stands a better chance of winning a cup by backing up on the Devils than he does starting for the Blues.

Don C.
Rangers biggest problem last year was depth at the center position - they addressed that without losing any significant parts of the team - three other teams in the conference took huge hits (Devils, Isles, Sabres) while only one other team made nearly as many improvements as the Rangers did (Philly)

uncle Jim, you never picked me up yesterday. i was sooo looking forward to your bbq. i had a big bag of marshmellows all ready, but their gone now and i have a bad tummy ache.

agree that a goalie (if Valiquette starts as backup) and a dman would be the trade deadline targets.

uncle TJ, gimme back my underoos!

how about ESCHE as a back-up?

Steve,

What do you think it would take to get one of the young D's out of Chicago? (i.e Seabrook) Prucha &??

Rangers might think it's finally time for Montoya to come up to the big team on a permanent basis. Valiquette is going to be the solid journeyman stand-in for Lundqvist until they're entirely comfortable with the state of Montoya's game. Best of luck to Kevin Weekes, though. the man was class and a gentleman whenever he was representing the team...I only hope he gets to play a few games.

Frank, class or not Weekes was abysmal and never gave us less than 3 or 4 goals against. Please check the stats, I cannot believe that people ever wanted him in net.

How about Alex Auld, formerly of Florida. He made about $1.5 million last year but wasn't not tendered an offer this year. He was solid for Vancouver in 2005/06 but struggled last year with the Panthers. I would take a shot at hime at about $600-$700k
