North Babylon's <strong>Eugeneia McPherson </strong>, a Newsday first-team All-LI selection last season, is the latest player from the area to committ to a Division I school by choosing St. John's. She also considered Seton Hall, Iona and Miami. McPherson played her best in the biggest games. She scored 32 points in the state championship game against Rush-Henrietta (Section V), 31 points against Corcoran (Section III) in the semifinals and 33 points in the Suffolk Class AA final last season. She averaged 25.7 points in the postseason and 22.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.7 steals and 3.5 assists in the regular season and has 1,886 career points.

St. John the Baptist center <strong>Christine Huber</strong>, a Newsday first-team All-LI selection, will play at Rutgers. The 6-4 senior led St. John the Baptist to the CHSAA state championship for the second consecutive season and its first Federation final. She averaged 17 points, 13.7 rebounds, 5.4 blocked shots, 2.8 steals and 2.7 assists as a junior.

Copiague point guard <strong>Ieasia Walker </strong>, a Newsday first-team All-LI player, has committed to South Carolina. The senior averaged 19.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 5.1 steals in leading Copiague to the Suffolk Class AA semifinals last season and has 1,528 career points.

<strong>Megan Vasquez</strong>, also a member of Newsday's first team, will play at Yale. She scored 25 points in an overtime loss to Hicksville in the Nassau Class AA championship game last season. She averaged 19.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 3.8 steals and has 1,594 career points.

Holy Trinity forward <strong>Terry Green</strong> has committed to Seton Hall.

St. Anthony's guard <strong>Taylor Flynn</strong> will attend Cornell.

Glenn's <strong>Jackie McKenna</strong> committed early last season to William & Mary. 

South Side's <strong>Tara Lonergan</strong> will attend Mount St. Mary's (Md.).

<strong>Denis Conroy</strong> has stepped down for health reasons as coach of Commack and <strong>Bruce Haller </strong> was named the new coach. He has coached the Long Island Renegades, an AAU team, the last 6 years and coached the Empire State team this past summer with Tina Riggio and Mike Riley. Haller began coaching as an assistant Varsity and junior varsity coach on Walt Bachman's staff in Valley Stream for 10 years. Haller said Conroy will stay involved as much as his health will allow.

After three days of trials at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., Sammy Prahalis was one of 12 players selected to the 2008 USA 18-and-under Olympic team. She was one of 35 players invited to try out. The 5-7 Prahalis, Newsday's Player of the Year, will train in Colorado Springs from July 10-16 and in Washington D.C. from July 17-20 before leaving for the FIBA championships. Prahalis, a point guard who played at Commack, will play at Ohio State. She was a McDonald's All-American and the NY Gatorade Player of the Year. She averaged 30.1 points, 7.9 assists and 7.2 steals.]]>

The North Babylon girls basketball team was honored by Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro (D-North Babylon) at the Legislature’s May 13th General Meeting for winning its second consecutive Long Island Class AA Championship. The team reached the Class AA state title game for the second straight season. A resident of the school district, Legislator D’Amaro presented the team and district administrators with Proclamations before the entire Suffolk County Legislature. North Babylon also received the New York State Scholar Athlete team award for achieving a cumulative grade point average of 91.85.

“I commend all of the players, coaches and supporting administrators who have combined educational excellence with athletic prowess to bring honor to the community,” Legislator D’Amaro said in a press release.  “I am proud to call them my neighbors and am confident that they will continue to represent North Babylon well in their future endeavors.”
