Herricks grinds out win over Calhoun
BY ADAM RONIS
Herricks coach Glenn Lavey was concerned about how his team would guard the top players on the upper-echelon teams in Nassau Conference AA-I. In the past, it has been a major problem.
But Herricks was able to hold Calhoun's Megan Vasquez and Jasmine Fuller in check in a 41-38 win tonight. Vasquez had 13 first-half points and hit a three-pointer to open the third quarter, but didn't score the rest of the game. Fuller scored three points.
"In the past, we lose this game 59-35," Lavey said. "For us, this is a good win. Calhoun is a very good team. We didn't do much on offense. We played good, physical defense."
Herricks doesn't turn the ball over much. Lavey said the team hasn't turned it over more than 10 times in a game this season, and had 15 or 16 turnovers tonight. Herricks, which can't be seeded higher than 6th in the Class AA playoffs, is 2-2 against the top 5 seeds and plays Syosset on Tuesday.
