Massapequa outlasts Hempstead

BY BOB HERZOG

Here's a quick midnight update: Massapequa managed to contain the great Terrell Williams and defeat Hempstead, 30-22, Thursday night at Hofstra in the other Nassau Conference II playoff game. The Chiefs will face the Game 1 winner, Freeport, on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Hofstra.

Massapequa was led by the passing combination of quarterback Rob VonBargen and receiver Mike Mauri. The two hooked up on three touchdown passes, with VonBargen throwing for 202 yards and Mauri catching 12 passes.

Williams did catch one touchdown pass of 34 yards for Hempstead, his 23rd of the season and 42nd of his career, both school records. But he was held to 44 yards rushing. Hempstead also scored on a Nassau playoff record 90-yard TD pass from William Carmona to Dasquan Gaskins.
