It’s raining a lot harder in the second game of tonight’s Nassau Conference II semifinal doubleheader than it was in the opener. That, combined with the style of the participants, has made for a starkly different game.
Hewlett leads, 10-0, at the half, thanks to the return of quarterback Andrew Cohen. The elusive quarterback scrambled away from a strong pass rush on a fourth-and-5 in Garden City territory and threw a 29-yard TD pass to a wide open Beau Miller that gave the Bulldogs a 10-0 lead. Earlier, Eric Balberg had kicked a 27-yard field goal.
The Trojans’ best scoring chance came after they recovered a fumble on a fair catch and took over at the Hewlett 23. They got to the 10 but failed to score when Matt Montgomery threw consecutive passes to Pierce Bradley that were caught, but ruled incomplete and out of the end zone. Both were close calls that appeared to be correct based on Telecare’s TV replays.
