Look out Kenny Wood, Sebastian Telfair, Kenny Anderson, etc...

BY MARCUS HENRY

Sebastian Telfair (Lincoln, 2,785), Kenny Anderson (Archbishop Molloy, 2,621) and Kenny Wood (East Hampton, 2,613), New York State's top three all-time leading scorers, could have some company if Greenport junior Ryan Creighton has his way. Creighton eclipsed the 2,000-point plateau last week and has 2,033 on the season. With at least one more game (the Southeastern Class D Regional Final), Creighton should end the season north of 2,050 points.

Ironically, Creighton's coach, Al Edwards, is Greenport's all-time leading scorer with 2,117 points. Edwards is fifth all-time on Long Island behind Wood, Bobby Hodgson (Floyd, 2,532), Greg Cerillo Jr. (Faith Academy, 2,320) and Gary Williams (Bay Shore, 2,125).

St. Anthony (NJ) 65, Long Island Lutheran 48

BY MARCUS HENRY

The Long Island Lutheran boy's basketball team has every reason to keep their head up. Yes, they lost by 17 to St.Anthony (NJ), the No.1 team in USA Today's Super 25 Poll. But the Friars (22-0) haven't won by less than 20 points all season. In fact, only 5 of their wins were by less than 30 points. After the game coach Bob Hurley said it was the closest game they've had in a long time. He said he liked what the Crusaders did on offense and added they were an "excellent" team.

Make no mistake about it, though, the Friars are a great team. Six of their players are headed to Division I schools. And a seventh, Dominic Cheek, is a junior who is being recruited by North Carolina. You can't get much better than that.

"We couldn't hit our open shots," Lutheran coach Brian Carey said after the game. "But that team is quick."

Carey was right on the money with that assessment as the Crusaders strugged early. In fact, Jeriel Henriquez scored all of Lutheran's 11 points in the first quarter. Richie Harkins began to find his stroke in the second and third quarters.

There were no moral victories for Henriquez, but he did say a game like that could help the program's profile. "It would've been a great win," he said.

Lutheran proved a lot. It proved it could play with just about anyone. And the Crusaders also proved they aren't a group that gets intimidated.

Any who missed the game can catch it on the web at http://sportswebnet.com/ beginning 7 p.m. Friday night. It's a great opportunity to see Lutheran for the first time and St. Anthony. It's not often that Long Island gets the No.1 boy's team in the country to come here.

Suffolk Playoff Seedings...

BY KIMBERLEY A. MARTIN

All right, I'll just come out and say it: I'm not convinced Hills West should be the top seed.

I know the Colts finished the regular season undefeated at 19-0 and are 13-0 in League IV. I also know that Tobias Harris is one of the best scorers on the Island. But I still think the No. 1 seed should've gone to Whitman.

Aside from last night's cataclysmic meltdown against Bay Shore (OK, perhaps that's a little drastic, but it was a pretty bad performance don't you think?), the Wildcats have faired well all season. And Hills West hasn't faced a team as tough as the Marauders.

But perhaps Hills West will prove me wrong.

(Something tells me they just might after reading this post.)

So here's the Suffolk Playoff Sked for your enjoyment:

AA

Whitman Falls...Hard.

BY KIMBERLEY A. MARTIN

"Dominating performance" doesn't even begin to cover it.

Bay Shore all but embarrassed previously undefeated Whitman last night, winning 72-54, to clinch the League II co-championship with the Wildcats.

Whitman hardly resembled a team on the verge of a perfect season, entering the game 13-0 in the league and 17-0 overall. Flat, out of sync, careless and unfocused -- you name it, they looked it; a stark contrast to the way the Wildcats played the Marauders last month, winning by eight at home.

In what appeared to be a matter of seconds, Bay Shore went on a 14-0 to start the game (sparked by a Jordan Allen dunk and four consecutive three-pointers by Booker Hucks). Whitman looked re-energized after halftime, cutting the Marauders' nine-point halftime lead to just five. But Bay Shore responded in a hurry, expanding the lead to 20 in the fourth.

I'm scared to think what the score would have been had Bay Shore converted its foul shots. The team went 19-of-42 (!!!!!!!) from the line. Coach Navro Robinson admitted it's been an issue all season.

"Guys really don't concentrate like they should at the line, but they're going to get better at it," he said after the game.

Let's hope so.

Though Robinson added, "Anytime you can win a league title it's good for the season, it's good for the kids, it's great for the program," several of his players said the win was about more than just that.

This game was about respect.

Both Hucks (who finished with 30 points and six three-pointers) and guard Barry Ingram said they felt Whitman had acted as if it already had the game locked. Apparently, Bay Shore was offended by comments Whitman seniors had made in a recent HS Boys Basketball Insider about going undefeated and winning the league championship their senior year. Hucks and Ingram said that kind of talk gave them even more of an incentive to "take care of business" Wednesday night.

Read the Insider and decide for yourself. I wrote the article and still don't see how they could have gotten that impression. But either way, the extra motivation worked in their favor and now the Marauders will ride the momentum into Tuesday's playoff match-up with Sachem East.
