  • Here's why I kept LSU No. 1: The defense. I'm that impressed. Oh, it's also ranked No. 1 in the country.

  • I might be slighting Ohio State a little much. Speaking of defense, the Buckeyes can play it as well. A win over Purdue and I'll start giving them some more credit, but that's not until mid October.

  • It's a shame the country's top offense is ranked No. 21 in the Campus Confidential poll and has one loss.

  • If Alabama wins this weekend, they'll get more of my vote.

  • Texas is barely hanging on to it's Top 10 ranking. I'm really not sure the Longhorns belong right now.

  • The jury is still out on South Carolina for me.

  • Key example of why the AP/USA Today polls can be stupid: Louisville is ranked ahead of Kentucky.

LSU defense? It is very good, but how good? At Mississippi State, Virginia Tech & Middle Tennessee, not exactly college versions of the Montana to Rice 49ers. USC was up 42-10 in the 4th quarter at Nebraska before they called off the dogs. I might be wrong, (and I do not like USC) but Les Miles may regretfully get his wish in January, and have to eat his words.

I'm rooting for the home team here, but Texas will answer a lot of questions against K-State this weekend. K-State is legitimate (not top 25, but certainly a bowl contender) team this year, and would have beaten Auburn (in Alabama) had it not been for a pathetic effort from K-State's left tackle.

Texas will (and should) win. But I think the nature of the win -- whether they actually outplay K-State, or whether it's simply being on the field while K-State shoots itself in the foot -- will show you a lot of what you need to know.

All that said, if you don't love watching Ron Prince coach, you just don't love football.
