i wish someone would have asked about coles injury status?? has he been practicing, or what? Anyone have info on this?
Hey Erik, what about Coles injury status? Has he been practicing or what? Any info?
Erik: If the Jets go 11-5, you can send me the name of your favorite bar and I'll make sure you drink for free some evening...
Erik you think the Jets will sign anyone after the first week of the season? Maybe that is why Poteat has not been claimed.
Tonight at 9PM on Long Island's 90.3FM, Newsday's Jets beat reporter Erik Boland will be joining us for a live, commercial-free Jets Season Preview. If you're in the listening area, please tune in.
While we're not yet webcast, we'll get the audio up at http://hosted.filefront.com/patchyfogg
as soon as humanly possible.
Thanks!
John Z., nothing slips past you, huh? As for Coles, you know how secretive the Jets are with injury information, but in the two 45 minute practice sessions we saw last week, he looked to be pretty much full strength. Mangini, a couple weeks ago, called how they were handling Coles "precautionary" which means he probably could have played against the Giants Aug. 23 but they felt there was no reason to risk him in the preseason.
J., I have several places in mind from my NYU days to take you up on that...
JayM, it is not inconcievable that the Jets have a similar type of "understanding" with Poteat that the Pats appear to have with Lynch. I still can't figure out, though, why they cut him and not Barrett. Oh well.
Chris, I"m sure people have other things to do. But thanks...
I found this interesting, someone asked Randy Lange about where the players are going to stay during training camp he replied "I don't know that that's been determined yet".
I assumed they had some kind of dorm setup to house players at Florham Park during training camp. I guess not.
So our Jets broke the bank in every possible way this year. However, they wont break it a little more and trade for some of these big names out there? Dominique Foxworth, Fernando Bryant, Deltah Oneill. What is it that we don't know and why, above all else, is Barrett's salary acceptable?
JayM,
It'll be wagon trains. They will circle them during training camps and sleep under the stars after Mangini finds research stating the refractory period for learning complicated systems is shortened by eating pork 'n beans off dirty metal trays. Unfortunately it will also cause lockjaw in several players who failed to notice their trays were rusty. In an completely unrelated note L. Coles did not once mention Chad Pennington.
Operationally, there's no way to justify the exodus from Hofstra across the Hudson to the Promised Land (NJ, ugh!)--are you kidding me??? All this right before the first regular season game. And the owner and the HC and selected players have the brass to tell us what a paradise the new training facility is.
This only insults our collective intelligence further. Can you imagine Kraft and his organization doing anything like this? They may be crooked, but they're not stupid.
I'm sure the so-called faciliity is far from completed or ready for the seasaon. For once, the press corps should be our eyes and ears and tell it like it is. Call it the Florham Fiasco and stop feeding us Woody's BS.
Mr Green T what can I say you are one funny guy, please never stop posting. Cliff the Jets what I hear are really tight on the salary cap. Taking on a $12 million will do that to any team. I have answered my own question through google when I looked up the new Jets training complex, I did a hotel search on there and see there is a hotel right next to the facility. So I am assuming they players will stay there through training camp. I wasn't going to wait for that slacker Boland to get off that futon and answer my question. j/k EB. Erik is probably tuning up that Solaris for his daily commute to NJ, enjoy the gas and tolls and traffic :)
Sorry I couldn't particpate in today's thoughtful and lively exchange. No wonder they call you Erik the Magnificent or the Sage of Boland or the Futonian Fire Ball.
Please excuse my last angry post. The new meds finally kicked in. Bo-Man, here are two queries I would have posed earlier:
From the draft through the end of the preseason how would evaluate Mangini's press conferences and interviews on a 5-point vacuity rating scale ranging from 1 = he provided little useful information and insight to 5 = he offered cogent explanations and illumination? Was there an improvement from April until now?
I would also like your appraisal of Mr. T and Woody on the same two points--their overall rating and any changes in vacuity level over time.
Thank you.
Erik: I know you're a political junkie. Are you following the Sarah Palin revelations? It's getting weirder by the second, an absolute train wreck. Intrade is now offering bets on her resignation....
Wait, what? Did I miss something J...oh...must've been mezmorized by her hotness.
JayM, the Solara is a beast. It can handle anything thrown its way.
RC Meany, glad you clarified your first post. I thought for a sec I might need protection for my first day at the new facility. As for your vacuity ranking scale: I'd give Mangini a solid 3. Here's the deal with him during camp: for certain questions - injuries, position battles, etc. he wasn't very good, or in your word, vacuous. But when asking him about a specific player for, say, a feature story, he was pretty good. And from beat veterans tell me, that's a huge improvement over his first year and even his second. I usually don't talk about how guys are with the media - because readers generally don't care - but you asked so I'm answering! As for Mike T., he was a -15 during the Favre thing, but I would give him a solid 3 when I sat down with him one-on-one about a week after the Favre trade. Like Mangini, he has a dry sense of humor that I like for the most part. As for Woody Johnson, I'd give an "incomplete." He met with beat reporters before the Green and White practice and was good in some spots, not so good in others. He's mostly stayed out of the spotlight while he's been owner so I think he's still learning the whole "media thing." A work in progress. I'm willing to assist him for a reasonbly hourly rate.
J., LOVE the political question. I will expand on this at some point [even though no one reads this blog for my political thoughts but whatever and you did ask] but I think McCain went for a blantant political pander by picking Palin. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean she's an impending disaster for the ticket. Convention speeches are generally overrated but she needs to hit one out of the park tonight. If she can captivate people - and I don't mean the Greek Chorus inside the convention hall - tonight, people will call McCain's pick an inspired stroke of genius. If she's bad - either incoherent or dull or gives cliche after cliche in coming off as weak - then this could turn into this generation's Tom Eagleton. Different parties, I know, but you get the idea. It does need to be pointed out that Dems are engaging in some rank hypocrisy right now in some of their critiques of Palin. The whole thing fascinates me. And are you serious about intrade? That's hilarious, whether you're joking or not!
Alaska: our weather's cold, but our Gov is hot!
Seriously, she has as much experience as Obama, a 2 year senator (ie none)
that said, weather looks good, but hot in Miami for Friday, which is s shame, CP can't throw a dry ball let alone a wet one
Ricky Williams scares me a bit. Jets didn't takle well, and he ran all over them a few years back. that said, Cotchery and Coles could both have 100yd days
Erik, Wow! This morning i would never have dreamed i'd be reading about Tom Eagleton. Anywhere. That poor dumb bastard was run off the Titanic for drilling holes in the side. He was the last one standing at the end of "Eenie Meenie Miney Mo" then got voted off the island. His last words were an indication into the depth of his insanity: "go forth in love and peace — be kind to dogs — and vote Democratic." Notice there was no mention of "be kind to Nixon."
(the real) Mike, if the Jets can wrap up tackles at the point of attack, they'll force the Phins to throw and that should benefit the Jets. I remember that game where no one could tackle that day. That was Herm's last year wasn't it?
Brett, and the Jets to a lesser extent, are realy behind the curve with preparation, moving to NJ etc, and will be working with a limited gameplan.
Combined with the heat, tough travel (bad weather HERE Fri-Sat) schedule, Favre’s recent woes on opening day, and it being the first home opener of the Parcells regime, this could get ugly, but only if Fins get a runnning game going.
Fave will turn it over, and will throw a couple of TD’s, but think mistakes will haunt them as they did in preseason so they will not be a scoring machine.
Prediction, if not in a hurricane, Jets will be up13-3 at half and will survive 23-16, simply because I think the coaching staff will play very conservative(in part thinking ahead to Pats in Week Two) rather than following my advice (how dare they!) and blitzing the hell out of them.
It will take Mangini awhile to figure out he has superior talent than most of this years opponents.
Favre 15-30 220 yds 2TDs 2INT.
The running game will continue to struggle and will be the achilles heal of this team all year.
If they go to the playoffs it will be with a dominent defense and special teams carrying an improved but still below par offense.
