Go ahead, name a stranger situation in sports over the last 10, 15, 20 years than what's happening in Green Bay (Ok, Manny's thing in Boston is pretty good right now, too, but still...).
The runaway highlight to the above link to the espn.com story:
"A Milwaukee television station reported the Packers had offered Favre about $20 million over the next 10 years to remain retired. The Green Bay Press-Gazette offered a similar report, although it did not name the dollar amount. If true, the reports revealed a startling lack of lack of insight into Favre's makeup and what he is looking for."
Um, ya think? And now we're paying people to stay AWAY from work? What a train wreck.
As for the Jets today, practice at 8:45 a.m. with player availability afterward and Eric Mangini at about 11:30. Another practice is scheduled for 5:45. Both practices are open to the public. Tomorrow's activities, however, are closed to the public.
And dmb, I'm seeing your Keller question now as I'm about to post this and head outside but the quick answer is, yes. Keller has been running free almost every practice. A couple days ago Bryan Thomas dropped back into coverage and tipped a ball away from Keller over the middle but other than that, the rookie has been open and caught almost everything thrown to him. I can remember just one outright drop and for a rookie - even a veteran - that's a decent start to camp.

Eric,
Really enjoyed your comments on the last post. It's so refreshing to read to have someone on the beat like you. Reiterate what burf said...
My question - I know this is early, but is there any chance they keep 4 QBs. Does Ratliff have any chance of being the #3? If not, are we primed to lose him off the practice squad like Ward and others the last couple of years?
Also, do any of the injuiries look serious? Anything to worry about?

Erik, in the business world, this is what's known as a "covenant not to compete", and it's very common when employee-owners are bought out of a business.
Hey Boland, quick question, maybe something you could observe today...What do the Jets have in the way of offensive line depth? Outside of guys like Jacob Bender and Nate Garner, I'm not even sure who they have. Has anyone looked like a solid backup, and do you think anyone could capably plug a hole on the line in case of injury?
Next time you see Overmayer, could you ask him how SNY can air a Jets post-game show and not air any highlights from the game?
And how come nobody's paying my parents to stay retired? They're both doing an awesome job of it.
I think it's one of the most idiotic things I've ever heard of. For years, being a Finance major, I've wondered why CEOs get such ridiculous severance packages after they completely tank a corporation. It's like, hey guys thanks for losing us millions of dollars!! but here's a hundred million to keep YOU happy! What? Favre's being a little girl...I've felt that he should've retired 3 years ago and left it at that. His alterior motive is to either get more money or "become a legend" .I quote become a legend because, well, I don't think Favre will ever go down in football as a legend...he's just not good enough.
Andy, Brain Custer has stated repeatedly on the post-game show that they do not have rights from the NFL to show highlights. SNY does show the highlights on Tuesdays during the season on Jets Extra Point.
Oh and Boland, just read your answer to the Cleveland question and I'm pretty sure you've been hanging around Tannenbaum and Mangini a bit too much. You are, indeed, honing the art of the "nonanswer".
Good, solid, straight forward answer Erik. If you didn't concur with everybody's opinion that Baker was in and the Jets got the shaft, then you would have had no credibility to speak of.
I was originally of the opinion that we should get Favre who would be well motivated to play with a chip on his shoulder. However, in the last few days after hearing he doesn't really have a desire to play for us(can't blame him after 4-12) and his seemingly selfish style of dealing with GB, I would rather not have the circus.
I was also on the Favre bandwagon-- still believe he is better then what we have- but - because this has dragged on- and his lack of desire to come to NY Jets- we should just say no thanks-- I am now of the belief that this is a WOODY JOHNSON thing-he wants BF here; After signing him, he will announce the PSL plan for Jets season ticket holders; Yes, he has to do that anyway, but it would be a lot easier for fans to swallow if they had a HOF'r at QB. I-Rod went to the Tigers & asked for the trade to the Yankees; he wanted to come to NY; BF is in Mississippi throwing at the high school field. The reports are he won't speak to the Jets or Tampa...let's move on...
With the Jets new TEs (and improved O'Line) maybe it is worth giving Chad one more shot at starting QB...3 yards ad cloud of dust, conservative passing game (no ints), great D, good kicking game, maybe, JUST MAYBE we have enough to compete against the BELLICHICKENs in NE.
Are-Tee - thanks for the info. As a viewer, however, you have to ask why bother with a post-game show if you're not allowed to show any of the game itself.
I'm not a regular viewer but I recall one afternoon where we were traveling back from somewhere and I missed the game but got home in time for the post-game. To hear them refer to crucial plays or questionable calls and not be able to see them made the show useless, in my opinion. I wound up turning to ESPN News or someplace else where I could see the highlights. Granted, it was a minute and a half versus a half hour of analysis but in that regard, a picture really did tell a thousand words.
Erik- Dustin Keller-- is his speed that of a top WR, or of a TE; If it's equal to a top WR, do you, or could you see him being switched to a WR at some point; AKA a Big T.O. type of receiver-may have to lose a few pounds--get to 230ish. My thinking is, at WR he could play every play, with his size, blocking on a CB, Safety, or even a LB, would help the running game. Perhaps having 2 te & spliting him out that's how the Jets plan to use him.
"in the business world, this is what's known as a "covenant not to compete", and it's very common when employee-owners are bought out of a business."
Favre didn't get bought out of a business...apples to oranges. I was dead set against Roger Goodell's involvement in this situation, but now I think it's clear he needs to help resolve this. Ted Thompson and Mark Murphy have handled this situation in a very Isiah Thomas like manner (i.e. a brainless manner). It needs to end.
Cliff, I think you are right on the money about Favre. I would describe him as a "diva". He needs to be constantly stroked and reassured, pampered, coddled and indulged on his own terms and in his own time.
Remember Roger Clemens' annual flirtation with returning to the mound, until the steroid investigation finally put an end to that charade once and for all? That's the sort of "diva" Favre has become.
