Dwight Lowery signs

The Jets signed fourth-round pick Dwight Lowery, a cornerback from San Jose State, late this afternoon to an undisclosed contract. Lowery earned the nickname "Dwight Swipe" in college, intercepting a school-record nine passes in 2006, his first at San Jose State after transferring from junior college. He added four picks last year, giving him 13 interceptions in 25 games. Before heading for San Jose State, Lowery played free safety for two seasons at Cabrillo Junior College, intercepting 13 passes in 15 games. Lowery worked almost exclusively at cornerback for the Jets during the team's OTAs and minicamp.

Fifth round pick Erik Ainge and first-round picks Dustin Keller and Vernon Gholston remain unsigned from this year's draft class.

I was just coming here to bust ya', Boland. Good work, you got a signing in on time.

Erik, Nice work on the chat room today. See everbody was worried about the signings. They will all be in on time.

Erik, Do you know if all the rookies showed up today at orientation? Including Chris Baker who'll be residing in the "Pete Kendall Memorial Rookie Wing".

Ira, thanks and glad you got through! I think the Jets will be OK on the signings as well, but it will probably be down to the last minute.

And Darrell, I'm shocked we didn't hear from you during the live chat. I know, I know. You work and all...

Mr. green T., The rookies who have signed showed up. By league rules they can't report until they have signed contracts. As for Baker, eight days and counting until he rips into the team again. Or gets traded, which I increasingly don't think is going to happen. "Pete Kendall Memorial Rookie Wing."
You always come up with something...

Jets signed Erik Ainge. Nice work Boland. You're gettin' 'scooped' by your own readers.

Next up Keller and Gholston early next weeek. Gholston will probably get a 6 year deal worth about 45-48 million with 22 guaranteed. This is going to be a very good year and the Jets will be in the playoffs.

Who am I? What am I doing here?

Boland's not the fastest, but he's certainly not as behind the curve as Rock was.

I'm not seeing a report on Ainge signing anywhere. Erik, any chance of Ainge beating out both Pennington and Clemens. Saw him play last year and he looked pretty good.

I saw Erik Ainge play last year against Arkansas in Knoxville, and I was not impressed. However, the Vols play calling was horrible. Obviously, though, the Jets saw some promise in his abilities to draft him the fifth round.

RC Meany, are you lost? Go towards the light RC, towards the light!

IRA, i'll a tall glass of that green kool-aid sir. Man, i love this time of year!

Green T... Ira... Erik... Help! Either this is an alternate universe or I'm having some kind of out-of-body experience. I feel I'm going over to the light side of the Force.

Darrell, it depends on what your definition of "scooped" is. Oh, I guess it is probably the same as mine. What can I say? Nothing. It appears Ainge, indeed, did sign.

John Z., I'll still answer your question, despite the shot:). There is almost zero chance Ainge beats out those two. Mangini's plan for camp is the same as minicamp, splitting the reps 50-50 between Pennington and Clemens, with Ainge and Ratliff getting mostly third-team work. And I can't picture the loser of the Pennington/Clemens race falling all the way to the No. 3 guy. But I've said it before, the Jets feel they got a steal with Ainge.

Mr. Green T, Ira got through on the live chat yesterday; I was surprised not to hear from you!

And RC Meany, um, wow. I'm speechless. Really.

Erik, my son has a two week soccer camp (or my peoples version of football) and i've been out in the hot Brooklyn sun sitting down watching those kids run around. That makes me tired with my frequent trips to the house for rehydration and Jets News.

Next week i'm bringing the laptop for wifi updates. It's training camp after all. I have a problem, but the family still lets me in the house.

I can't believe it. There's intelligent life on the other side of the screen. This is tough, Erik. Until now, I've always been faithful--a one-blog, man. But, I feel myself slipping... And I like it.

Dear Erik,
Lowery will be a great addition to the NYJ secondary -- mainly because of his intelligence and his work ethic. He will be a heady guy.

Whether he will be able to turn and keep up with the speedier receivers in a one-on-one situation we'll be looking to see. This is more a technique question than it is Dieon Sanders' catch-up speed, because the guy will probably top out at about 4.45-forty timed velocity -- especially if he has no more of this Spring's hamstring problems.

It's not important whether he beats out J.Miller or not -- we're going to see a lot of CBs on the field in every game. In this area, we are getting smarter and faster and younger. ...an encouraging trend on the NYJs as far as I'm concerned.

Looking good.

Eric, I know this is off topic, but any chance the Jets have interest in Favre? One publication said it would cost the Jets B Thomas and a 2nd rounder. Plus they'd have to cut Chad.

Hey Boland, were you ever able to dig up anything more on the absurd Revis contract?

Any news of negotiations started with Gholston?

Mr. green T, I guess I'll let you slide with the whole "I've got kids" excuse. As for you having a "problem," hey, there's worse ones to have, right?

RC Meany, what really counts as cheating (blog-fidelity?) anyway? It's one of life's real gray areas.

KeepChad&Kellen, what I liked about Lowery in the OTAs was he worked at exclusively with the third team at the start but worked his way into quite a few reps with the second team as the practices moved along.

Frank, Favre isn't off topic at all. It's been discussed here in the last week. From what I've been told, the Jets have no interest in Favre and haven't explored - even casually - of what it would take to get him.

dmb8886, no to the first question. Still trying to get the full text of that. As for Gholston, yes those negotiations are in full gear. No one thinks (knock on wood) this will turn into a situation like Revis' last year.

I'm not sure I understand why people still want Favre on the team. He will not help us. He'll have to learn a whole new offense in record time, and it will only hinder the development of our future QB, putting the whole franchise in jeopardy. Forget about Favre.

Erik, I think the Gholston prediction is spot-on. I think Thomas and Pace will start the outside and slowly work Gholston in. Again, I think it sounds a lot like what the Giants did with Kiwanuka (sp), and that turned out pretty good to say the least. Then again, we dont exactly have a Strahan and Umenyora to bring Gholston along in a similar fashion.

Do you really think there could be some promise with Ainge? I hate hearing people comparing him to Tom Brady. To me it just sounds like desperate Jets fans dreaming up a near future dynasty. I dont remember anyone saying anything about Tom Brady when he was drafted. Point being, we wont know if we have a diamond in the ruff for another couple of years. No one said Derek Anderson was the next Tom Brady, and they certainly wont say it about the true "next Tom Brady," whenever and/or where ever he pops up. Back to topic, Ive heard you say that "Mangini likes him," but we havent heard what you think about him. Have you seen him practice? Mangini saying he likes a player is not enough for me cause he'll say that about any player he just drafted because no real test has yet to emerge until atleast preseason.

I'm still not seeing anything about Ainge signing on any of the sports sites I know of, including Newsday.

Any details?
