There's still time for Woody Johnson to do the right thing

To no one's surprise, the Giants announced today they will be using Personal Screw Licenses to help fund the new stadium. The Jets, as we've discussed, have not yet made the call on PSLs, though last week's survey sent out to season ticket holders suggests that announcement is imminent. I continue, at no charge, suggest Woody Johnson take this approach to PSLs.

My favorite parts of the Giants announcement are the respective comments of co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch. Both sounded almost apologetic for the decision.

"It’s both an emotional and complicated process to establish the price structure in a new building that has an evolving manifest,” Tisch said.

Nothing like a little "I feel your pain" insincerity by multi-millionaires. But more important, when Tisch strings together the words, "in a new building that has an evolving manifest," he sounds like a lawyer with no case trying to confuse the jury with impressive-sounding, yet meaningless, terms and phrases. In this corner you have the Jets comparing PSLs to "taxi medallions", and in the opposite corner the Giants are babbling about a building's "evolving manifest." Sounds like the building has some kind of bizarre personal problem.

Last chance, Mr. Johnson, to boldly go where too few NFL owners have gone and say no to this heist.

Erik,

Don't hold your breath, although if you did you'd have choice seats unless God is charging PSL's in heaven. Assuming that's your destination.

Boland, as highly unlikely as it is that Woody Johnson will actually pass up the chance at making money of PSLs, I feel he would be the one owner maverick enough to do it. He's always been a very good and fair owner, and, realistically speaking, is a fan-friendly owner. Obviously he won't pass up the revenue he'll inevitably get from PSLs, though. Hey, look Boland, I posted a serious comment..for once.

Now you know why they wanted to give everyone on the waiting list their money back. They had been swindling that cash for the last four years. At least I'll have season tickets for one season. No reason to get laughed at by other NFL team fans and then the FO of the one team I love to follow. This is so pathetic, it makes me want to wretch.

Hey Erik

Alan Hahn on the Knicks blog set up a Live Chat on his blog for the NBA Draft. I am expecting the same from you next year during the NFL Draft. :)

GET R DONE

Mr. Green T, PSLs in Heaven...that's priceless. No pun intended.

Bryan, a serious comment from you leaves me speechless (or type-less?) Enjoy it while it lasts.

Mike in Bumpass Va., "wretch" is a wonderful word.

JayM, you're a "Fixer" too? Good call. Hahn is the best. Yes, I'll be doing the live chat thing with the Jets. We'll probably do the first one a couple weeks before training camp starts and I'm sure quite a few after that into the season. I observed Glauber try to answer Jets questions during his live chat a couple weeks ago and wasn't impressed (kidding, Bob).

Tell me when and where. You'll get some nice double entendres (sp? Firefox says its wrong, but I've always spelled it this way).

As an aside, the Knicks still have fans? Are they still in NY? I could've sworn they moved...

People like Robert Wood Johnson own this country but they're still not pleased with their share of pie. Woody would sooner surround himself with monied cronies than fans who make noise for his defense.

The question is not whether they will extract a PSL but will they have the audacity to restrict ticket re-sales despite the license? If I shell out that money and can't attend a game, then the tickets are going up on Stub Hub.

I wonder if they're going to comp Firemen Ed his PSL?

No way the Jets don't charge PSLs. Not gonna happen. Way too much easy money.

I don't play golf at all. But like 85% of the people on L.I. I have dogs. For them we get a basketball court size patch of dirt at Cedar Creek (county) and the same size dirtier patch at Wantagh (TOH). I propose one Golf course at each park be converted to an open air, fenced in, off leash dog park where dogs can have some open room to run. Never happen though, for the exact same reason PSLs will. Dog owners can't pay $75 a dog to get a pee time.

Boland, I commend you for your comments. Unfortunately for every one reporter that is screaming about the unfairness of the PSLs, there are twenty lawyers/corporate suck-ups that are telling Woody just how great the PSLs are, and that he needs to do them to fund the stadium. I'm guessing that your voice undoubtly will not be heard. As fans we can complain, and not take part in the buying of PSLs, but unfortunately, going to the Jets games will become the trendy thing to do. The stands will still be filled every Sunday, the quality of the fan's attending will be laughable. Most of them probably won't know what a football is....but rest assured Woody will get his money. We, the true fans, are left to suffer with this franchise, but nothing new there.

If this is passed off as "ownership" by the jets, Let them give back to the Fan owners 1% of the bottom line every year (before creative accounting)
-LETS ALL GET TOGETHER FOR ONE GAME AND BOYCOTT! - send Woody the message he wants to hear!!!!

Boland, unfortunately it's something you're going to have to get used to once real football rolls around.

Hold on to your wallets boz, the jets are more greedy then thr G Man
as proven by the $5 bucks more the charged for parking last year

Erik,
The PSL's are just not fair. But it is reality in the bussines worl sad to say.. Lets just hope that the Jets will follow the Giants with the same prices. For those that could swing the 1,000.00 PSL fee at least its not like Carolina were they get 3,000.00 for the entire upper deck. For those that will have much higher PSL's its just a shame that a lot will ahve to give up their seats that they probably have had for years. There will be a lot more visiting teams fans now at games because i feel a lot of ticket brokers will buy up seats from fans that will want to just make a quick dollar.

Ira, it is reality but I will continue to call out teams that make absurd statements when justifying PSLs. Not that it will make a difference but it at least lets them know people are paying attention.

Erik,
I agree with you. They should fund their own buildings. I had a neighbor that was with the Bills and he saw how i was with being a fan of the Jets. And he always told me Ira you don't get it. Its just a business. I guess he was correct. BTW Erik nice work covering the Jets.

Thanks, Ira.

One moment from Jan. 12, 1969,
it's time the true Jets fans move on and start
watching the games on Directv Sunday Ticket...
What can your return on your investment be for the
Jets in 5-10-20 years, if the first 40 gave us one
moment!!!!!! A man spent 635 million on his investment,
and that was without a stadium.... Now, he has a stadium
and wants the fans to pay for it.... I will no longer buy any
products that have anything to do with J&J....
Hit him in the wallet also, very loyal fans can make him
ome to his knees!!!!! All we have to do is read the labels!!!!!
Boycott the games will not work, tickets, parking
already paid for in advance, he's not stupid.... Even if he sells,
the next owner will do the same, but he wanted the stadium, you pay for it, where we asked about new stadium...

Just got my notice in the mail today that my number is up and I can buy season tickets to the Jets! I've waited all these years for this day and all this PSL talk of the last few days has absolutely killed my enthusiasm...what a bummer.
