So, what do you think? Is it worth giving him a shot with the Jets? What would a pickup like that do to counter the Randy Moss acquisition? Do the Jets need a player like Keyshawn? Would they want a player like Keyshawn?
I'll let you folks handle this one. Discuss.

Bringing back a clown like Keyshawn would be a slap in the face to the other receivers. Not to mention the distactions he would ultimately bring. Once was funny twice is stupid!!
keyshawn would be a fine addition to the jets and not because the pats got moss but because keyshawn has always been a fine and tough possesion receiver. with chads arm the jets need physical receivers to fight for the ball, if he wouldnt mind being the third receiver behind coles and cotchery he'd be a good addition
I really don't see Keyshawn fitting a need in our WR corp. He's a possession guy and Laverneus/Cotch do a good job over the middle and in medium yardage 3rd down spots. I don't think he'd hurt, per se, but if the Jets pick up a WR at this point I'd be looking for more of a burner. Key does block very well though, and he's a QB's best friend on 3rd and <10yds.
The first team that came to mind when I read he'd been cut was SF. They have a young QB and just picked up a speedy WR in D-Jax who, unlike Key, is really good at dropping the ball. They might not want to pair him up with Smith though.
Maybe Seattle? Atlanta?
I imagine a lot of teams should be interested b/c aside from his antics and big mouth he's a very valuable and solid WR.
No way Jose. Once was enough. We need a burner with character - the opposite of Me-Shawn.
Keyshawn would be a welcomed improvement to the No. 3 revceiver slot over Justin McCarens. People wanted the Jets to draft Olsen to be a target up the seem and over the middle and that's what Keyshawn would bring to the table. Plus he's a great run blocker for a receiver and would bring some much need height to the receiving core, especially in the red zone.
no thank you to Keyshawn. the Jets do not need a prima donna in the locker room. They need a burner in that position. They should still try to sign a Defensive tackle.
I love Keyshawn. I still wear his jersey to Jets games. And my first reaction was to sign him. BUT, I have taken a step back, let the euphoria settle and decided it would be a poor move.
Last year it was a big deal for him to be ok with being a #2 wr and that was to arguably the top wr in 2005.
But, I don't see him being ok with being a #3 wr, behind Coles and Cotch. It would be a major ego hit to come back as the #3 to the city that drafted him #1, where he asked for the damn ball, etc, etc.
I think he has grown up alot in the past years, but that move might be too much.
Talent-wise and as a competitor I would love to have him. Coles is about the only guy who equals his toughness over the middle of the field.
YES!!! bringing keyshawn back to the jets would be great...with his ability to attract defenders, it will make life better for cotchery and coles.....his attitude will not be a problem cause mangini wont let ne thing happen, and the jets lockeroom is too strong to fall apart.......bringing keyshawn in will only help the new york football jets
Dont draft Keyshawn its not neccessary...the jets got two good recievers already and they just got another wide reciever in the draft.....the jets should go out and focus on a position they really neeed....like a d linemen
I think Keyshawn would be a fine addition to the JETS receivers assuming the JETS are unloading McCareins. While I would like more of a burner, Keyshawn would be a huge target for Chad in the red zone.
I don't see anything wrong with it. If he would like to come back we could definitely use a good 3rd WR. I think the biggest question would be would he want to come to a team and be the 3rd WR?
As long as he's willing I think it would be a good move. It's much better than the 3rd guy we have now.
Yes, we could use a guy with a little more speed, but the taking big shots downfield isn't our game and it doesn't play to the strength of Pennington. Coles Cotchery and Johnson is a pretty formidible 3 WR trio that could spread a defense out. We got the money from not drafting expensive players, so why not take a shot?
Randy runs faster going backwards then Meshawn! We need a receiver who can run not crawl. meshawn has never beem the same since Corwin Brown hit him going over the middle in a Sunday night game in Detroit about 6 years ago!
No need for KJ. 1,2 are solid, 3 there's JM with a little bit of Brad Smith. In the slot we have Dwight and now Stuckey. Our rec. corps ar pretty good. If KJ was an ageing NT, then maybe it would be a considerstion.
I have to agree I love Keyshawn Johnson......and to be honest what he brought to the Jets has been lacking since they traded him all those years ago...a big - tough reciever who can go over the middle, or consistently get those fade routes at the goaline when we cant punch it in (remember in that glorious 98 run how successful that was being thrown by Vinny??). Once again though, who knows if he is willing to take a 3rd reciever spot...the only team I can see him doing that for is the Jets, he makes it known whenever he gets the chance he loves this town still to this day - however.....that is not to say he would ever be willing to do that. Keep in mind if you watched the draft he was telling Jarret what he was gonna teach him, giving the impression he thought he was better and would start over him. You really think he will think Cothchery should start over him???
As an avid Cowboys fan I feel that the days of selfish Keyshawn are long gone. He is exactly what Pennington needs since Crebet retired. Keyshawn gives you that tough over the middle receiver, especially on third down. I think he'd be perfect teamed with Coles and Jericho Cotchery.
I doubt Keyshawn would be a big problem in the locker room for this team, but does mangini really want the headache for a #3 posession receiver? Keep in mind that on most teams being the #3 wideout means you also contribute on special teams, still think Keyshawn is ok with being the #3 if those are the terms? Doubtful. The big problem for Keyshawn is at this stage he would like to play for a contender AND be a #2 receiver, well at this point in the offseason most contenders are not still looking for a #2 receiver, including the Jets.
bring keyshawn back hes still a great reciever although he may not be able to make big plays like he used to but with chad throwing ball there is no such thing as a big play bringing keyshawn back would help in 3 reciever sets and would give chad more than just 2 options cause everyone knows nobody wants to throw justin mcariens
Our receieving corps. look ok right now, but what about after ONE injury? Keyshawn wouldnt be a bad pickup as long as is willing to be the third receiver. McCareins and Keyshawn are the same price, and no one can tell me that McCareins is a better receiver (although i would still really like Mccareins as our #3 receiver for a paycut, but KJ is just better.
Just heard Adam Schefter suggest NYJ as one of 3 teams where KJ could land
1,2,3?, how do we know what will happen with any of our receivers? You take Key if you think he can continue to make catches. He is still catching 70 balls a season. 70! He blocks, he talks, that is Key. If he wants to come, we should bring him. I trust Mangini more than you can imagine to do what is best for the Jets!
After seeing the Patriots grab Moss, I'd really like to see the Jets counter by taking Keyshawn. Thing is Eric Mangini doesn't work that way and even though the Jets could use another great receiving threat for Pennington, I really don't see the Mangini led Jets making this move. Mangini wants to build for the draft, and I don't thing Johnson is the kind of player he wants on his team.
So although I'd actually be a fan of such a move, I really doubt Keyshawn to the Jets will happen. Keyshawn may return to New York, but it won't be with the Jets.
Keyshawn back to the GreenMachine? A buddy of mine who tailgates in 17A has an Eyedea that this would certainly work out. What would Mr. Moss have to say about this? My Vision would be for Key to complement this team as a #3 slot receiver, and while PenningtontoColes is our mantra, you never know.
From a playing style compatibility stand-point, Me-shawn would be an older and slower redundancy at the WR position. From a morale/locker room stand-point, he would be the anti-Tangini tumor that grows on the team’s buttocks that would damage the team's chemistry from the get go.
I think keyshawn would be a good pick up for the Jets because the Jets have no hieght at the receiving core and could be finally be a nice tall target for Pennington. Keyshawn is also a good 3rd down wr and a good blocker and is a Mangini type of wr. the Jets should really try hard and sign him to a one or two year deal and get him before another team does. And have him end his carrer with the team he started with. The only problem that Keyshawn might have is not being able to be the star receiver he once was for the jets and not being able to go for the long routs with Penningtons arm(infact all our receivers should).I also dont think being the #3 wr wont be a promblem once he relizes hes not a #1 wr and more important when his bank account starts dropping.
Keyshawn would be a great pickup for the Jets. He would be a good tall receiver and would be a good blocker for Thomas Jones. And face it Keyshawn really only had his best years with jets and cant wait to hear the J-E-T-S JESTS JESTS JETS
Why would they want Keyshawn? The Jets had an opportunity to get Moss once or twice before and they passed on him. So, why would they take an older Keyshawn with less upside. Getting Keyshawn would just be a knee-jerk reaction to the Pats acquisition of Moss. I agree with most of the other comments that the Jets need a burner. Let's give Brad Smith more of a role and see what he can do.
You cant really compare Keyshawns attitude to Moss-- completely different. Keyshawn has never been a guy to flat out proclaim he only tries when he feels like it- his attitude comes from intensity and his extreme desire to win. Moss is selfish bc he loves his own reflection, Keyshawn WAS selfish because he wanted to win. I also wouldnt mind seeing Brad get a bigger role in the receiving game-- he can only get A LOT better in my opinion....
Keyshawn is a professional,
but would he be good value for what he would have to be paid versus how much he would play? He is at least a 10 year veteran. I assume that his minimum salary would be near $1 million for the season.
Can the team afford to put that much money into a 3rd receiver? Wouldn't bringing
Brad Smith along be a better value? I always anticipate good things happening whenever Smith is in the game.
I'm also concerned about Laveranues Coles durability at this point. He was definitely not himself after returning from the brutal head hits he took late last year. Coles dropped balls that we never saw him drop before.
Concussions seem to have a cumulative effect, and I fear that the next one could (and probably should) send Coles to join Wayne Chrebet in what would sadly be a premature retirement.
if keyshawn would accept the 3rd receiver spot then we would be nuts not to sign him!!!
just one question to ask yourself keyshawn or justin mccareins. i think the answer is keyshawn bay far! dont forget he has matured a little now that he is 35.plus he is a great blocking receiver!!!
Arnold, i share you fears 100% about Coles, and it really scares me now, just thinking about it and reading it in your post, but alas, you are dead on. Keyshawn is in the 2-3 million range, and your question about money is a good one, except we are set to pay McCareins more than 3 million this year, so its kind of a moot point. Anyways, i dont really believe we will do this deal, but id love to see it happen....
I'd rather see Key take (and give) the hits rather than Coles or Cotchery. But honestly, shouldn't we put the money into D? He'd be an assest to a couple of teams, just not the Jets. Fairy tale ending-yes, great blocker-yes, possession receiver-yes, Mangini player-questionable.
When Keyshawn came into the league he was young and arrogant and almost as good as he thought he was.
Now he's old and arrogant and nowhere near as good as he thinks he is. He would be an extremely disruptive force for marginal receiving talent.
In a word, NO.
I have no doubt the Keyshawn Johnson has matured a bit and can still be productive in the NFL. However, I just don't see him fitting in with this new Jets team that Mangini and Tannenbaum have worked so hard to build.
Please do not tell me they can even think about someone who is the total opposite of a team player. With him there is no team in the I. His sole consideration is his own ego.
Getting an experienced WR like Keyshawn is what the Jets need. They have to speedsters and Cotchery and Coles.. Keyshawn is one of the best over the middle guys every.. He is tall and big. The Wayne Chrebet era is over. Bring him back and We have nothing to worry about. We need him, and He is a new man He was a lamb last couple of years. Parcells Set him straight and let's give him #19 back..
I liked Keyshawn even though he couldn't coexist with the retired Chrebet. He would be a weapon to keep up with the Patriots. He is a big receiver the Jets don't have excluding Justin M. Justin is ok too but not like Keyshawn. He would take pressure off of Coles and Crotchery. It would open up the offense and leave the unpredictable schemes and befuddle Belichick a bit. Smith provided that too. The offenxe will be stronger with him. Lets go and get him J-E-T-S J-E-T-S J-E-T-S
Well it's after the fact now- Key retired and is going to ESPN. I do think that people who still lament the fact that Key and Wayne Chrebet never got along are missing the point. The fact is that neither receiver was as good as when they had the other receiver on their opposite side.
I think the Jets should have a Wayne Chrebet/Keyshawn Johnson day to celebrate two integral parts of one of the best Jets campaigns ever.
