LB for LB
In case you missed some of the Giants draft stories in Newsday over the weekend, you can check them out online. On Sunday I wrote about how Reese's second draft as GM is a bit different for him than his first, and in Monday's paper I wrote about how talk is cheap when it comes to Giants draft plans.
Up next will be a look at one of the Giants' needs: linebackers. Coincidentally, Glauber also picked today to run through his list at the position.
The Giants lost two of their LBs in free agency, Kawika Mitchell and Reggie Torbor, and they brought in Danny Clark. Right now Mathias Kiwanuka is penciled in as an OLB, but getting a play-maker for the position is probably a priority on the Giants' shopping list. I've really liked Jerod Mayo out of Tennessee for a while, but I'm not so sure he'll last until the 31st pick (assuming that's when the Giants make their first selection).
So, pilfering from Glauber's list of LB prospects, give me the three guys you would want the Giants to take to fill the position. Click below for a list of candidates (write-ins are welcome) and let me know what you are thinking.
Here are your candidates:
Keith Rivers, USC, 6-2, 238
Jerod Mayo, Tennessee, 6-1, 242
Dan Connor, Penn State, 6-2, 235
Curtis Lofton, Oklahoma, 6-0, 237
Cliff Avril, Purdue, 6-2, 251
Erin Henderson, Maryland, 6-3, 236
Quentin Groves, Auburn, 6-3, 257
Ali Highsmith, LSU, 6-0, 230
Geno Hayes, Florida State, 6-0, 226

Rivers will be the 1st guy gone...Mayo should be #2..Conner is more of a middle LB guy..I really like Groves in that he's played LB before..This would allow Kiwanuka to return to what he does best--ruch the passer and not worry about coverage...OFF TOPIC, but I prefer drafting a safety like Kenny Phillips

i like a guy like Tavares Gooden in rd 2 for GMen
I'd take Rivers first but theres not shot he'd be there. If Mayo is there then go with him. If he's gone too, draft another position and hope Groves falls in round 2. Didnt he have heart surgery or something though?
Keith Rivers, USC, 6-2, 238
-- will be gone and taken by either New England or New Orleans. If he falls to us....WOW!! Here's an idea: Trade Shockey to New Orleans and in return, switch first round draft picks and grab a 3rd/4th rounder. Will that blow Mr. Reese away?
Jerod Mayo, Tennessee, 6-1, 242
Ideal LB tht is versatile in a sense that he can play all three of the LB position in Spagnuolo's system. Versatility is something Giants like a lot. his size is a concern but thats where his speed comes into effect.
Dan Connor, Penn State, 6-2, 235
If the abovementioned are already drafted, grab him. He's plays the middle which is not our direct need but Spagnuolo can push him to the outside and as Pierce ages, he can slip on inside.
I strongly bELIeve a Safety should be taken before Dan Connor. I have seen DaJuan Morgan's ability and his off the field reputation has him as a class act. He's quick and most importantly, he can tackle, and tackle hard in teh open field - something the Giants have not been so stellar at recently. I think we draft him over Kenny Phillips even if the U man is available.
It's a toss-up on which position to draft first considering safety as our #1 need and linebacker very close behind. History has shown that linebackers taken in the first roud generally have a higher success rate...but who bELIeves that stuff anyway.
