When $302,320 is chump change

That's the amount of fines Rams running back Steven Jackson has incurred because of a contract holdout, with no resolution in sight.

Once Jackson agrees on a new contract, that figure will pale in comparison with the riches he gets.

Oh, what the rest of us could do with $302,320 right about now.

It's a strange world we live in.

How strange? Well, check out the last item in Boland's latest missive from Jets' camp when he shares with his readers an e-mail he received. We quote:

Olympic update: but not really. I checked in with a writer friend of mine – hold the applause. Thanks – who is covering the Olympics. In the middle of a captivating email about The Great Wall and the Games and bars other stuff, came this line:

“We saw shaved a** meat on a restaurant menu.”

I added the ** because this is a family blog. And now an educational one, too.

One practice tomorrow, at 1:30 p.m. It’s open to one and all.

There is a Rush Limbaugh punchline in here somewhere

Maybe Boland has one, since he's so up on politics these days. I guess I could ask him because he's sitting across the room, but he appears to be blogging about the morning practice we just saw at Hofstra.

Anyway, it appears Mr. Limbaugh would be interested in becoming an owner of the Rams if the team were to be sold. Limbaugh grew up in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

"The Rams would be a great team to have," Limbaugh told the St. Louis Business Journal last week. "I have a lot of friends in ownership in the NFL, and my desire to get involved has not been a secret."

Only one problem. Limbaugh is a wealthy man, but probably not rich enough. He's worth an estimated $300 million, which probably wouldn't pass muster in terms of a lead owner.

"I have no debt whatsoever. This would require changing that," he told the publication.

Limbaugh was a commentator for ESPN, but his comments ultimately got him into hot water, especially comments he made at Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb that were considered by many to be racist.

The Rams are not for sale, but owner Georgia Frontiere died earlier this year and her children have become majority owners. Chip Rosenbloom has said the team is not for sale.

Then again, everyone has his price.

"It's the same as it's been," Rosenbloom told the St. Louis Dispatch. "If the right person at the time right time with the right price came, I suppose that you might sell your house, right? So, I don't say never. ... If we get a phone call today from somebody who says the right things, we would listen."

Agent: Rams will DEFINITELY take Chris Long No. 2

Just spoke to Marvin Demoff, the agent for Virginia defensive end Chris Long, and I asked if he felt Long would go to Rams at No. 2, as has been speculated.

"I don't think he's going there," Demoff said. "I know he is."

The team had initially focused its attention on Glenn Dorsey of LSU, but Long emerged late in the week as the consensus choice.

The buzz is that Atlanta will take take QB Matt Ryan of Boston College, but there might be some hesitation there because the Falcons have also been highly impressed with Dorsey.

The Raiders seem intent on drafting Darren McFadden at No. 4, but you never know with Al Davis. He's liable to do anything, including trading the pick.

If McFadden is on the board when the Jets pick sixth - or higher, if they make a trade - I'm told they will definitely take the Arkansas running back.

The Rams' defensive ends had 5 1/2 sacks last year

Vernon Gholston says he can change all that. The Ohio State pass rusher will drop in on the Rams for a pre-draft visit.

Need a receiver? Try Isaac Bruce

He's available because the Rams have just released the 35-year-old receiver.

Shock? Yes, to some degree. But the Rams had asked Bruce to take a pay reduction, and he refused.

In today's NFL, that doesn't cut it.

Gone.

Scott Linehan might be on the hot seat

The Rams are 3-12 and going nowhere, and despite team management's recent hints that head coach Scott Linehan will not be fired, you have to wonder after reading Jim Thomas' piece in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about Torry Holt's sideline blowup during a blowout loss to the Steelers Thursday.

Seems it's not the first time one of the team's elite offensive players has disagreed publicly with the coach.

With a defense that has failed to see much progress this year and an offense whose star players are now questioning the direction of the team, it will certainly give the team's front-office decision-makers plenty of reason to seriously consider the immediate future and whether Linehan will be a part of it.
