Broncos beat Browns in stunning comeback in Cleveland

Hmmm. We've heard that one before, no?

1986. The Drive. John Elway leads Broncos past Browns in stunning comeback in Cleveland.

Different year. Different quarterback. Different Stadium. Same outcome.

Sorry, Boland.

Travis Henry arrested for dabbling in cocaine

Actually, the former Broncos running back wasn't just dabbling in it. More like he was bathing in it.

Authorities in Centennial, Colo. arrested him for being part of a multi-kilogram cocaine transaction.

The Broncos released Henry in the off-season.

My hunch is he won't be playing football in the near future.

The Broncos and Raiders hate each other on the field ...

... but not off the field.

Former Broncos quarterback John Elway is getting married to a former Raiders' cheerleader.

Lynch's buddy Marinelli not interested

John Lynch won't be getting a call from Lions coach Rod Marinelli, the former Bucs defensive line coach who was a huge Lynch supporter during their days in Tampa.

Pretty sure Herm Edwards won't give a call, either, since Edwards is trying to go with younger players. Wouldn't say it's impossible, though. After all, Edwards once called 40something quarterback Vinny Testaverde out of retirement when quarterback injuries crippled his team a few years back.

If Lynch doesn't hook up with anyone, he's Neil Best's responsibility, because the safety has his eye on a broadcasting career once he's through playing.

John Lynch is done in Denver

Now the question is whether Lynch is done, period.

The veteran safety, who took a significant paycut to stay with the team, was barely used in practice during the first week and received permission from head coach Mike Shanahan to skedaddle.
Lynch will certainly ponder any potential opportunities out there, although it's not certain how many teams will be lined up for an aging star with some recent neck problems.

If it's curtains on his playing career, we'll turn Lynch over to Neil Best, because he plans on pursuing a television career.

Stunner in Denver: Broncos release Travis Henry

The Broncos just announced the move.

Head coach Mike Shanahan gave the old "we did not feel his commitment to the Broncos was enough to warrant a spot on this football team" line to explain the decision.

(That is code for "We think he is a piece of you-know-what.")

Henry has had a checkered past that includes mutliple violations of the league's substance abuse policy and failure to make regular child support payments to the mothers of his nine children.

I know we've already used this word a couple of times today, but it seems appropriate yet again: oy.

Police may have found Darrent Williams' murderer

This, according to the Rocky Mountain News. If it's true, it at least provides some measure of justice for the senseless murder of a talented young man.

Jay Cutler has diabetes ...

... but his career is not imperiled. The Broncos' quarterback was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and will have to take daily injections.

McDonald's bags can be hazardous to your health

Here's how.

...

We'll take a few days to chillax over spring break and be back with news around the NFL, including a trip next week to the annual owners meetings, which are always chock full of stuff. Click here and scroll down to see several entries on topics that will be discussed.

In the meantime, Tom Rock will provide some football blog entertainment in between college hoops and the opening of the baseball season.

Oh, and condolences to the Best household, which saw all their hoops dreams go up in smoke over the weekend.

Are the Broncos hurting for money?

Sure seems that way now that eight office employees have been laid off. It's very unusual in a league flush with cash.

The layoffs included Paul Kirk, the Broncos' director of media relations and Andrew Mason, managing editor of DenverBroncos.com.

"It's a very, very difficult day when you have to eliminate jobs," Joe Ellis, the Broncos' chief operating officer, told the Denver Post. "Especially when loyal, hardworking employees are involved. But our industry is like many others, where downsizing and layoffs are required to make the business more effective."

According to the Post, the first hint the Broncos were hurting financially came when three of coach Mike Shanahan's top assistants — defensive head coach Jim Bates, offensive head coach Mike Heimerdinger and general manager Ted Sundquist — departed and were replaced in-house.

Maybe it's another reason the Broncos are reluctant to pull the trigger on a trade for Jets defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson, who is looking for a new contract before agreeing to any deal. Another complicating factor is the bone-on-bone condition in one of Robertson's knees. Robertson has failed two physicals - one in Cincinnati and one in Denver - but teams are occasionally willing to overlook some medical concerns if they feel he can last a year or two. Evidently, not so with D-Rob.

Why was Julius Peppers in Denver?

Our man Jeff Legwold of the Rocky Mountain News writes that Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers, the subject of much speculation in recent months because his contract expires after next season and because he hasn't lived up to expectations in Carolina, was seen at a Denver Nuggets game last night.

Hmmm.

The Broncos are in the market for defensive linemen, and they've had discussions with the Jets about Dewayne Robertson. But Peppers could be another option.

Then again, he might just be a Nuggets fan. Wink-wink.
