Did the Bengals get a trade offer for Chad Johnson?

Maybe not.

Then again, there will be a lot of stuff going on between now and the draft, so who knows? In any event, coach Marvin Lewis said the team hasn't received any offers. And Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who has an interest in Johnson, said he hasn't made any offers either.

In the meantime, check out some of the strident comments from Lewis, who is essentially daring Chad Johnson to sit out the season as promised.

btw, if Rupert Murdoch winds up buying Newsday, I hope he doesn't make us pose for our blogs with this kind of life-sized picture.

That's Mark Curnutte, the highly respected beat writer for the Cincinnati Enquirer.

UPDATE: The Bengals did, in fact, get a trade offer from the Redskins, and they did, in fact, decline the offer.

Whether they hold to that stance through the draft remains to be seen. If you get an offer of a first-round pick and then some for a player who does not want to be on your team and has already been a locker room menace, how do you not make a deal?

How? I've no idea. Why? Spite. Your boys Staple is back on the beat, Gmen/Shockey has run its course. A first rounder would be sweet, but a second round pick with a player or a 3rd rounder in the 2009 draft works fine. Just move him, he needs to be elsewhere for the betterment of his career and the team.

Ah, a few comments.

Craig - my man - you are joining the rest of those who can't hate on Eli anymore. You have all chosen new meat in Shockey just for random reasons to whine. Do you really think with what just happen with Eli and the Giants that he will be a loud mouth/cancer to the team? And even if he does, which I'm sure he won't, we have until week 6 to make a trade. I laugh at people who think that Reese is trying to convince the rest of the league that Shock isn't for sale, just to up his trade value. He's a 7th year Tight End with injury problems - pride alone isn't going to up his value.

Shockey is my favorite player on the team. He SHOULD NOT go anywhere. He is a playmaker. Period.

Back to the subject at hand, Glaub. At first, I was nervous in hearing that the entire NFC East (minus us of course) was interested in Ocho. Then I thought - if we can pass rush the way we have been (maybe even better this year with Kiwi back), then who cares what WR's opposing teams have? Case in point with the amazing Randy Moss in the SB. If ya get there, then it just doesn't matter who is deep down the field.

Justin, you are off the mark. As Bob knows well I've never bashed Eli. I despise the U, and Shock plays like typical U trash. Big mouth, injury prone, bad hands, poorly suited for this offense. And he's going, so find a new sideshow jerk to love.

I may be off the mark pertaining to you bashing Eli, and that's all well and good (most of the Shockey haters are rebound Eli haters that have nowhere else to go)...

That said, what the U produces may be big a bunch of big mouths; however, they are also smash mouth. To deny that talent comes out of that school is just ignorant. Because they can talk and back it up, that means they are trash? You say Shockey is a big mouth as well - but if I remember correctly, this was his quietest year as a player. He never said anything about anyone and kept his mind on football. Injury prone? I love how people say he's never played a full season. Shall we look at the years?

Season One - Plays every single game he is asked to.
Season Two - Gets injured about halfway through the year, and would have been able to play if need be, however we were horrible and there was no reason to risk it.
Season Three - He missed the final game of the year, which was of course meaningless at a 5-10 record. He was also playing a metal rod in his foot.
Season Four - Again, misses ONLY one game, due to the fact that we had the playoffs clinched, and the coach wanted to rest him. That game against the Raiders was only for seeding/division titles. He was back the next week for the Panthers debacle. Oh and that's right, he played with a cracked sternum the entire year.
Season Five - Again, misses only one game, the final game, and returns for the playoffs which I'm sure entailed him playing through some sort of pain like he always does. Perhaps you remember that's the game he tried to run over an Eagles linebacker WITHOUT A HELMET.
Season Six - Sadly, he missed his most significant time in his career, and sadly, it was the year we decided to win the big one. If you call him injury prone for this one, I will ask you, how do you prevent a broken bone? Perhaps his conditioning in Miami had something to do with it. I forgot they don't have a good bone strengthening program there.

You do the math - 6 seasons...he's played 81/96 games. Injury prone? Jury rules?

You also call him poorly suited for this offense. Since when is someone that is as fast a WR, big as a LB, and as strong as an Lineman wrongly suited for ANY team?

Jeremy Shockey is the scapegoat. He called it himself - if things don't go right this year, he will be the first one to be blamed. Why would a man like that WANT to stay? He puts his heart on the line every single game, hence why he gets banged up. I promise you that if he does in fact get traded, he will wreak havoc on another team - that you can put your money on. Only in his 7th year... remember that.

I am a huge Giants fan, and over the years I have supported Shockey, however I'm also a realist and I think that it may be time to deal Shockey if you can get good value for him. By good value I mean no less then an upper half 2nd round pick for him.

Justin, you make some great points about Shockey. He plays with a ton of passion, and he does play injured. However, I disagree with a few points that you made about him, mainly about Shockey fitting in with the offense. Shockey the player does fit in with our offense, mainly because he has bulked up so much since he was drafted and become a fantastic blocking TE. Shockey the person though still acts as though he is in a spread offense at Miami, and in Fassel's more pass happy offense that the Giants ran with Kerry Collins. Shockey was significantly lighter, and faster which allowed him to outrun linebackers and out muscle corners and safeties and he was a player that opposing defenses had to game plan for. Even when he did play last year, our red zone offense was not very good, and that is an area that Shockey should have excelled in, and he didn't. Today, Shockey is a very good player, but he has lost some of his speed and does pose the same match-up problems that he used to as a rookie.

Regarding his attitude, as a player its great. He's a guy you want to go to war with, and thats admirable. However, I think that the Giants as they are now have a very delicate chemistry. Guys like Barber are gone, and Burress stepped up last year and checked his ego and became a team player. I don't know that Shockey can do that. If he isn't happy, and doesn't want to be here, and you have a team that will give you a great value pick, I think you have to pull the trigger on the deal.

Between Boss and his pass catching abilities, and Michael Mathews and his ability to block, and Darcy Johnson who was solid last year in camp before going down on IR, the Giants do have options at TE, and at pick 40, the Giants will have a lot of quality options to pick from to address many different areas of need, and it would allow us at 31 to not have to necessarily reach for Kenny Phillips, as we could sit back and hope he falls to 40, or take one of the other safeties that would be available at that point.

Bill,

Very good points, and I appreciate your ability to agree to disagree.

I think people claim that Shockey is overrated, but these are the same people that are praising Kevin Boss for his 5 receptions in 4 playoff games. Granted, he was clutch in the SB, and it was an awesome play, they are praising him as the next Bavaro.

That said, I think giving Shockey another chance this season, in a team that, as you said has a delicate chemistry (with free agency and egos as big as they are, it's hard to find a team that's not... it's pathetic really), is ideal. Let him continue where he left off last year as someone who was showing change.

However, as you say, as much as I love the guy, you can't let feelings come in the way of business. It will break my heart to see im go, but if a better offer comes up than so be it. I just can't stand the people that want to get rid of him solely on the fact that he is a "cancer", when that couldn't be farther from the truth.

Justin
