Studs Terkel dead at 96

Chicago icon Studs Terkel, a writer and radio host, died on Friday.

I'm sure CN will have more to say about him than me, but I just wanted to note that Terkel played a sportswriter in the movie "Eight Men Out," which is an excellent movie that I have seen. (I did not see "Armageddon," the photo of the lovely Liv Tyler below notwithstanding.)

Here's the lengthy LA Times obit.

Anyone out there know Studs' real first name? I saw it in the obit.

Adam Sandler and cursing are big in Kansas, apparently

waterboy_ver1.jpg

From the Kansas City Star:

Kansas football coach Mark Mangino will make a personal plea to the KU students, encouraging them not to continue with a profane pre-kickoff chant at the Jayhawks’ home games, associate athletic director Jim Marchiony said.

The chant — based off a line from the 1998 Adam Sandler comedy, “The Waterboy” — states, “Rip his (expletive) head off,” referring to the opposing team’s kickoff return man.

KU will send a video of Mangino speaking to the student body over e-mail today, and the video will be replayed before the game on Saturday.

BACK TO ME: I, of course, have not seen "The Waterboy".

But I am a fan of Adam Sandler. There is a Sandler story that every member of the NY baseball media knows, but I will not repeat it here to protect the person involved. And it's not that funny if you don't know the person.

Will Ferrell: No more sports movies

anchor.bmp

Like Chicago Norm, I get my celebrity news from US Weekly. Here's what funnyman Ferrell has to say about doing more sports movies:

"I'm retired from sports-genre films. You know, I think I filled my quota."

And how!

Semi-Pro (Didn't see it)
Blades of Glory (Didn't see it)
Talladega Nights (Didn't see it)
Kicking and Screaming (Didn't see it)

Are there more? Maybe someone who saw all four can rank them. Anyone? Hello up there. Is the movie over? I'm still down here... and I'm still in quite a lot of pain. Maybe someone in the lobby could call an ambulance. Oh, the pain is really quite severe. I... I've fashioned a makeshift splint. Here goes nothing.

(Austin Powers. Saw them all. Anchorman. Saw it.)

October is Help Rieber Increase His Movie-Watching IQ month!

A while back we told you how Rieber has a stunningly wide range of great movies he has never seen. We even did a top 10 list.

1. Slap Shot
2. Raging Bull
3. Fast Times
4. The Blues Brothers
5. The Big Lebowski
6. Fight Club
7. Weird Science
8. One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
9. Remember the Titans
10. Rounders

Since then, many, many other movies that Rieber has never seen have been unearthed. Too many to count or list really. Fletch and Hoosiers are two of them.

So we've decided to make October "Help Rieber Increase His Movie-Watching IQ" month on TFS.

Please vote on the list above or write in one of your own to get us started. Rieber will rent the winner and watch it and then let you know if he feels ashamed that he had never seen it.

Thanks for your participation.
