Vecsey admits he's a Fixer

Never mind the escalating monthly hits to the blog or three straight months of record-breaking page views and a standing as the second-highest sports blog read on the Newsday.com site. Peter Vecsey today made several direct references to Newsday and some of the factually accurate things we've reported . . . including information we shared here on the blog that was also reported elsewhere.

Sweet. Vecsey rips, therefore I am.

Usually the venerable Mr. Vecsey is spending his time hatcheting the work of my esteemed, far more experienced colleagues such as Frank Isola and even Vescey's own teammate at the Post, Starberman (who, by the way, reported twice on the Grizzlies deal and even said it could be imminent based on Darko Milicic's "99 percent" claim...but I guess Peter was too caught up in getting his Fix to pay attention to Marc's work).

It's nice to be relevant. Thank you, Peter.

It's also nice to be relevant and factually accurate, which we have been all along. Even without the help of Mother Cablevision.

Fight! Fight! Fight! LOL! Get him Alan!

Alan,
You're the most active & interactive, and informative host blog out there. Keep up the good work.

It's good to see that you guys are having a 'friendly' competition. I guess Vescey is keeping you on your toes and vice-versa.

PS:
Don't waste your time on Marburman.
Bubbles has no credibility.

Vescey, like the rest of us, is disgusted by the fact that Marbury is at training camp, and that Zach is untradeable. What you are reading in his article is the same disappointment we are all feeling when our hopes were raised about purging the organization of two of its biggest liabilities (Marbury, the teammate, and Zach, the contract), and then dashed to pieces by the reality. I can certainly say that Marbury seems to me to be every bit as toxic as everyone says, and that, despite his indisputable skills and stats, Zach gone could certainly have been more valuable ($$) than Zach here -- remember, it is all about 2010. I, like Vescey, am also disappointed by their presence at camp.

I don't know who your sources are, Alan, so I am certainly not qualified to comment on how solid your story was. To Vescey, however, I would say that sometimes you have to risk being wrong to break (rather than repeat) the real news.

Pacers trade Jamal Tinsley (probably b/c his contract is manageable) to Nuggets for Chucky Atkins and Steven Hunter.

Does this mean Iverson is gone soon?? Hmmmm....

LOL You owned him Alan.

I would thinkTinsley would become their starting PG and Iverson will move to the 2 spot. Is it just me or are the Nuggets becoming the new Blazers? No way they take Marburry for Iverson now.

As for Vescey, isn't he the one who got slammed by Brian Hill's wife for breaking the story of his firing on Christmas Eve,forcing Orlando to let him go during the Christmas holidays. I personally never believed Zach was going to Memphis and Vescey is right in a sense that printing these stories that turn out to be wrong seem like trying to create news rather than reporting it, but Vescey has a track record of doing the same thing.

I'm telling you man, Peter Vescey is a douchebag.

it´s VECSEY, Allan!!! ;-)

RE: Jeffries

Any chance we can get Balkman back?

Ball Handler: check

Shot Blocker: check

7' + wingspan: check

Weakside Defender: check

Passer: check minus

Too Many Blunts: Aw man, Crazy

I always appreciated Balkman's acumen on the defensive side. I thought he made intelligent plays and had a knack for being in the right place. Similarly for offensive rebounds and fill-in-the-blank offensive action. No, couldn't shoot a lick, but i thought he had and amazing handle for a man of his size, and could sweep a board and drive the ball to half court like few I've ever seen. Perfect I thought for a running game. D'Ant and Walsh saw otherwise I guess, but in light of Jeffries latest, he would have been nice to have as insurance. Jeffires is alot like Camby in that he flies around and disregards his own safety to make plays. I guess you should always pencil him in for missing a third of the season.

@Lives in Jersey - you feel me on Collins, you lay out the case best.

There's a reason why I call him Peter Vasectomy lol

Willis,

I liked Balkman too, but doesn't PE Jr. give us exactly what Balkman would have?

Alan, you are a liar and a disgrace to your profession. How can you call yourself a journalist when you fabricate lies from made up sources and present them as truth? Please, in the future, be clear on what is your opinion and what is fact.

Vecsey is a clown. They got so sick of his one-liners back when he was on TNT that they played a rimshot sample every time he let rip one of his lame jokes. "My sources tells me" became a punch line because he has been wrong so many times. Not so much a sports reporter, more of a sports gossip reporter. Cindy Adams with a beard.

Back to the Knicks, too bad about Jeffries. didn't know that Coach D was so hyped up about him. Doubt that JJ can keep up at center, not for long anyway. Would probably do what he did with Larry Brown, run up the score and
waive to the bench for a rest because he is too
winded to play anymore.

Maybe Lee will have to fill the void in the meantime.

Wow Alan I can't remember the last time I saw a reporter put together an entire story just to bash another reporter. You must really be stealing his thunder. Whats even more odd is that Vescey before this week hadn't written anything since June! What does he choose to grace us with? Slamming one of the only reporters who actually kept us filled in all summer. But I guess its easier to be accurate when you write two stories a season. Wait this just in... Vescey reported Jamal Tinsley officially traded to the Nuggets. Wow, big scoop for Pete... except hoopsworld.com just invalidated the report saying nothing is imminent and that it should be best categorized as a rumor. Oops. Gotta love karma Alan. Maybe Petey should wait 3 months before he writes a story next time. I mean its only responsible reporting.

I'd take it as an honor to be raked by Vecsey as you have Alan. Maybe Berman offered to tie his shoes all season if he ripped you this one time.

The loss of JJ seems like a tough one since D'Antoni really liked his defensive presence in the system. With nobody else who can duplicate his skills, it looks like a new defensive plan will be needed for the first 1/4 of the season.

where did Balkman go was he traded, sorry been out of work more important things going on in my life ( damn i need a job)

Hey PhilC - Let's hope you are right. Only problem is he's a little green to step in for Jeffries. I'd love to see him take up the mantle. Imagine Patrick Ewing Jr at center for the Bizarro Knicks!

I hate Vescey and Berman, period.

and example of reading Vescey:

My sources tell me that Michael Jordan is coming back to play along side Kobe Bryant. Also, there is a trade looming between the Hawks and the Rockets. The Rockets will get Joe Johnson and Mike Bibby, and the Hawks will receive the trade rights to Frederic Weiss.

and example of reading Berman:

Today at Knicks practice, Stephon Marbury looked great. The Knicks are foolish if they keep Marbury in the "reserve" blue jerseys. Marbury's stylish tattoo on his head with wizzed by as he outplayed Duhon, and Nate Robinson. D'Antoni will be a fool not to run the offense through Marbury, who had a hand in selecting rookie bust, Gallanari. Gallanari, who is from Italy, is expected to be the future home for Stephon a few years from now. I will continue to bring more news on the Knicks later.

Thank God for you Alan. Keep the good work up. We appreciate it.

Yeah, Vescey is so smart. he has an uncanny knack for reporting "what the deal really was" about 1 month later after it happens. It is exactly what you elude to Alan..if Vescey is taking a swing at you, you must be relevant. Lol, it's good to be a Fixer.

The best part about all of this is within an hour of blasting Newsday and Alan, Vescey "broke" the story that Jamaal Tinsley has been traded to the Nuggets for "Chuckie" Atkins and "Stephen" Hunter. The Indy Star and Denver papers have said it's not true, with Hunter's agent, Mark Bartelstein, saying “I think there have been conversations because everybody knows the Nuggets are looking for a point guard and Indiana another big. But I don’t think anything is imminent or close.’’

And the best part? Vescey didn't even spell Chucky and Steven correctly in his original story.

As you all have mentioned above, Vescey is the one with the source problem. Vescey is the one who makes 20 predcitions before getting one right. Vescey is the one who is disrespected in the industry.

Keep up the great work Alan.

Peter Vescey is my father

Vescey is not navy tested.

i read vescey's piece last night (early morning), so as i was waiting for the page to load for my daily fix, i said "vescey called you out, it's time to step up". glad to see you took the challenge. to be honest, i could care less for vescey, i don't even understand what he's trying to say half the time and his jokes aren't funny.

on the other hand, i've been reading your blog for the past 3-4 months mostly because you were the only person with NYK updates. later for those haters. i mean, seriously, is someone at the NYP insinuating yellow journalism at Newsday?

in defense of peter vecsey:

he is a fine a funny writer, and his basketball acumen in unparallel in the business. the guy has been eating, breathing and playing basketball in this city his entire life. the depth of his perspective on the game, particularly it's sociological thread as woven through the second half of twentieth century new york city, is a gift of sports journalism that no true basketball fan should be dismissive of. he is also a marine veteran and one of the toughest players i have ever competed with on the court.

sec11rowH gadda be Peter Vecsey. From the 'toughest player i ever competed with on the court line.' bcos he got his own D. nobody else need to guard him.

I agree with sec11rowH in many respects. Vecsey has certainly been a credit to basketball journalism in this city for a long time. But, to write an entire column simply to rip Alan for writing reports about things that eventually didn't transpire seems highly unprofessional. Reporters write stories about trades, rumors, etc all the time that wind up not happening for whatever reasons, but were sourced in some truth. I'll bet Peter has written or said literally thousands on things that eventually never panned out. Does that mean he has bad sources or is a liar?

If he's mad a Alan for ripping his Post brethren, he just say so. Not a write a BS column because everything Alan says or hears doesn't turn into fact.
