No superstars, Isiah? Ain't no all-stars, either

A few days ago when we were in Los Angeles -- I'm losing track of the cities and the days so bear with me -- Isiah Thomas made the statement that his collection of players "haven’t really gotten to the point where they’re superstars."

Thanks for pointing that out.

Not that any of us expected it, but for the seventh straight year the Knicks will not be represented in the All-Star Game next month in New Orleans. In fact, it's been a while since the Knicks were completely unrepresented in the entire weekend. There's no one in the Slam Dunk contest. No one in the Rookie Challenge.

It's as if the Knicks don't exist. Maybe the league doesn't mind that right now.

For a little perspective: The team's 14-31 record is exactly on pace with Larry Brown's 23-win season in 2005-06. The Knicks held this exact same record after a 104-90 loss to Toronto on Feb. 3, 2006.

Just curious before I venture out to the shoot-arounds. Is anyone that interested in hearing from Channing Frye? He was a lottery pick that now sits on the bench here in Portland. Yawn.

I'll check in with the usual PreGame blog later.

I heard Frye is on the verge of being part of a 3 way deal w/ Dallas and NJ for kidd?

Frye was good, but at best will be a 15pts 7 reb guy.

The NBA could care less for the Knicks, lets just say the knicks are like the steroids of the nba...lol

they suck from top to bottom, only franshise worse then them is probably oakland.

Thanks for your continuing insight. I have a couple of questions. I have invested in NBA League Pass and TIVO and faithfully watched every Knicks' game down here in Antarctica. Can you explain why Isiah continues to use the zone? Considering they're weak on defense to begin with, it doesn't seem to work with this team. It seems to me they manage to consistently give up decent leads when they switch to zone.

Question 2. People seem too willing to give up on Curry and Randolph. Am I wrong in thinking that until the Knicks have a point guard who is truly a point guard - one who knows how to get the ball into the post and remembers to try again if the pass isn't there the first time, we aren't really going to know. As much as I appreciate N8 and Crawford they're really aren't patient or skilled enough at the point.

Thanks for your good work.

Marbury was at his best when running pick and pops with good shooting power forwards. Him and Van Horn actually had a decent thing going, then K. Thomas, then Frye. For whatever reason, Zeke canned them all.

Penguin...you watch the Knicks from Antarctica?? That's loyalty baby! Good questions. Definitely will blog on it later today. Heading to the shoot-around now.

forget this year...trade fatso or Bozo on draft night for a lottery pick. that leaves us w/ 2. then select either eric gordon or donte green w/ the first one, then draft C jarvis vanardo from miss st.
everyone in the theater might boo him but they'll be glad when they see him play. i'll be watching him again thoroughly tomorrow night vs. tennesee. he could BLOW UP nationally after this game. i need more of my fellow knicks fans to get on the bandwagon to get this kid !!

Alan -- The above question about the zone defense prompts me to ask something I've been wondering about for some time: How does Isiah stack up as an Xs and Os coach? I'm thinking he ain't no Triangle Phil.

Living here in Maine (moved from L.I. 25 years ago), I don't see the Knicks play often, but when I have, their offense seems pretty ragged, and not terribly sophisticated. Would Curry, Randolph and Richardson score more consistently if there was more movement, screens, etc.?

It would be so great if the Knicks actually do worse than Brown's 23-59 campaign. Keep losing, Knicks!!! I want that high lottery pick.

Nice pick up by the Lakers.

i'm not sure if i feel good or bad about blogging with someone in antarctica. no offense, but that guy's got to have a lot of time on his hands down there, right? at least he has a good excuse, but surely i should have something better to do than blog about the worst team money can buy?

btw alan, i don't know what your tech guys were doing when they "worked" on the site last week, but they didn't fix jack, i still have to submit in triplicate to get posts in.

as for the lakers deal, they lakers did what they had to do to make a run (in the vulnerable west) while they have kobe. but should they lose kobe, they will regret those 2 #1's. i think the griz did well to get so much for gasol, he's good, not great.

Gasol isn't great, but he's a heck of a lot better then Kwame Brown and his hands of stone. Kobe isn't going anywhere, and a front line of Bynum (eventually), Odom and Gasol is pretty formidable. And none of those guys are that old.

This also puts an end to the pipe dreams of somehow unloading Zach on a "desperate" Lakers team.

I THINK ITZ TIME.TRADE EVERY1 EXLCUDE LEE BALKMAN CHANDLER....START FRESH..SEND NATE N CRAWFORD TO THERE HOMETOWN FOR ANY1 OR PICKS .CURRY FOR ANY1 OR PICKS.I'LL KEEP Z-BO CUZ HE GOT HEART AN IS A WARRIOR IN THE OFFENSIVE SEND.NEEDZ A CENTER THAT CAN REBOUND N BLOCKS ATLEAST 2 3 SHOTS A GAME.REBUILD NOW..I WOULD START THIS LINEUP AN SEE HOW THEY PLAY

THATZ THE ONLY WAY TO KNOW WHAT U HAVE......
LIKE I HAVE SAID IN THE PAST I WOULD TRADE FOR GERALD GREEN WITH THE RITE PEOPLE AROUND HIM HE CAN BE ANOTHER MCGRADY/KOBE.....
GOTTA MAKE MOVES.
START FROM THE TOP FIRE EVERY1.......

Hey Alan,

Can I just add a non NY Knicks comment....well it relates to a former Knick. One of my favorites actually.

The biggest snub BY FAR from the All-Star selections is Marcus Camby.

I dont think anyone can argue with his numbers or his performances on the court. Take a look at his numbers from just this past Wednesday - 6 of 7 shooting for 13 points, 19 boards, 5 blocks, 2 steals. Camby has consistently delivered games of this caliber all season.

Pat Riley mentioned that David Stern should roll out the red carpet and give Shaq an extra place on the East All-Stars. I say Camby deserves that level of recognition this season far more than any other player.

What do we have left to show from that ill-fated trade with Denver? A sour, and let's not forget out-for-the-rest-of-the-season Fallen Starbury. Not to mention the 1st round pick we still owe to Utah.

Camby, we miss you man.

Please ask Isiah why, if he is such a good talent evaluator, did he choose Frye over Bynum?

Even an idiot like me would have taken Bynum.

Hey Whoa,

In response to why Isiah picked Frye over Bynum:

Frye had 4 terrific, and polished years with Arizona, and Bynum was an 18 year old question mark. And, Frye is from New York.

Other then Lebron, I feel that GM's were afraid to pull the trigger on picking a guy right out of high school with a Lottery Pick. Nobody wants to be embarrased by picking another Kwame Brown.
Considering that Kobe, Jermaine O'Neal, KG, Amare weren't a Lottery pick should be proof of that.

Also consider that it took Bynum a couple of years to mature, and learn the fundamentals on becoming a better player. Even Phil was quite frustrated with Bynum. Isiah would have been destroyed by the impatient NY media, and Bynum would have easily lost all of his confidence on the court.

Frye was definitely the better choice at that time.

@knowledge

i rarely if ever comment on other people's observations in this room, but after reading your "solution" to the knicks woes, i have to say, you are an idiot, and should be banned from internet use.

@big_L....you too are a fool, anyone could see that bynum was the better bet.

knowledge put down tha pipe brah....ur smokin' some straight-up angel-dust over there.

how many here feel we will see z-bo try to 'go for delf' tonite?
he will be an ever bigger black hole tonite i believe trying to prove a point to tha blazers' organization. i predict several offensive fouls for bozo, alot of frustration & maybe a technical or 2 (thus ejection). i wonder if he will prove me wrong....

Tonight Zach had it going on. Why we didn't go to him for the final shot in regulation I have no idea. Its inexcusable. Right now there's 2 minutes left on OT, and to lose this game is pathetic

jamal??????????????????

why did Zeke take out Fred Jones out for the full 2nd and 4th Quarters as well as OT those 2 quarters seem to be our worst 21 and 12 points plus Renaldo Balkman allowed Brandon Roy to go off for his first triple double while being injured one his shooting hand............Zeke has a huge mental block our something how do you not go with a guy who is playing back at his home town for the first time this season and was doing a good defensive gob on Roy I dont understand it........He will never remove Crawford who was shooting horrible he wont remove Nate who in the last 2 games has been torched by the opposing PGs but he will remove Jones who is our best wing defender and a good scorer when Zeke will give him the green light and give him some touches......all I seen tonight was the Nate, Crawford, and Zach show.....no passing or moving the ball around a lot of one on one action the results of having to many ego players on the court and one time and not enough roll players in to help mix it up
