Heart Attack

James Dolan wasn't present to see it, but a lesson was learned by Isiah Thomas and the Knicks tonight. The fans in New York don't boo lack of talent. They boo lack of effort.

Consider the lineup Isiah had on the floor in the second quarter against the Cavaliers: Fred Jones, Jamal Crawford, Quentin Richardson, David Lee and Malik Rose. That group turned a one point lead into a 13-point halftime advantage.

Yes, it was against a lethargic Cavaliers team that looked more like the Knicks of recent games....yes, even the worst team in the NBA is going to win some during an 82-game season.

But we can't just keep pounding on the negatives. They've been well-represented (the offense is simplistic, the starting five is poorly constructed and the coach uses a random rotation that messes with a player's confidence).

Let's take the positives out of this win and learn from them:

Lee's numbers stand out in the boxscore (he scored 12 of his 22 points in the second quarter), but what you don't see is how that group collectively worked as a unit. Passing, cutting. Legit screens set by Lee and Rose. Attempts at defense and not allowing easy layups. Lee made sure to foul LeBron hard enough so he couldn't complete a three-point play. Rose showed some hops he once had earlier in his career by stuffing Sasha Pavlovic on a dunk attempt.

Rose also found a cutting Lee for an easy score. Crawford had four of his six assists at the half because he kept the ball in constant motion. Dribble-drives, passing, moving. Honest effort. Also helped that the Knicks shot the ball well all night. Over 56 percent on the night. 50 of their 108 points were scored in the paint, but the perimeter shooting (the Knicks were 8 for 17 from downtown) was key. Q-Rich had his best shooting night in a long time. He hit 4 of 6 from three-point range and was hot early.

During most of that second quarter, Isiah had more individual talent on the bench -- Eddy Curry, Zach Randolph and Stephon Marbury -- than on the floor, but wait...what do my wondering ears do I hear?

A jolly old Garden filled with holiday cheers.

That group may not win you a championship, but they're more entertaining than what Thomas had been going with. And that group wasn't getting you a ring any time soon, anyway.

What Thomas needs to do now is stick with a set rotation. Stop looking to get people minutes or looking to protect people's minutes. Stop worrying about the size of the contract you are now burying on the bench and how you'll be criticized for admitting the guy you gave big money to can't play.

The Yankees do it all the time (see: Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson, Kenny Rogers....). It's worse when you try to ignore a problem everyone else is already aware of (see: Chad Pennington, Alexei Yashin, Scott Boras....).

Go with your group, establish a standard within the team. Whomever doesn't meet this standard takes a seat until he does. Let majority rule (as in, if the team votes against allowing a player who ditched on them to play, you DON'T play him) and let the players hold each other accountable by rewarding those who adhere to the standard.

Let the first guy who complains get a ticket to the Steve Francis/Penny Hardaway "rehab assignment" vacation club.

Isiah does a lot of tough talking. What he needs to do is start walking the walk with his players. Only then will he have a chance to win back his locker room.

A hard working, unified quintet played superbly while a handful of overpaid, self-centered, egotistical prima donnas watched.

Now there's an idea! One that I wrote about two years ago!

It's a miracle! Sound logic from the fingers of the Tony Romo Neverbe with a Master's Degree in Home Improvement Projects.

Is it just me or do the Knicks play better and more as a team without Marbury?

I saw Isiah's interview after the game last night. Haven't seen one in a little white. Did anybody else pick up on this, or is the man downright shell-shocked? It was like he was in a daze. And they WON. I can't say I'd blame him, with all the chaos swirling around him at the moment. But some of the bad decisions (like substitution patterns) make more sense now.

Did he really answer "Never" to a question about stepping down? As coach? Or both jobs? Wouldn't any decent GM in this league at least be looking at other coaching options at the moment? Isn't that also a way for Isiah to begin exiting gracefully? He removes himself from the bench, but keeps GM job? But I guess we know when that will happen. "Never." Or until David Stern pulls a Cleveland on Dolan.

Yes, the Knicks do play better without Steph.

But don't quit on me now Isiah haters! It's just one win. The civil rights movement wasn't one in a day. Keep going out there. All 24 of you. Of course, the media outnumbered the angry mob. Did Alan sign the pink slip? He asked you to come out to the protest and support the cause. Did he support it himself? Can we get the names of those who signed this historical document?

Enjoy the ride. This team has a future, there will be changes, we will get better. But one win and you guys throw in the towel. Isiah is still coach. If you aren't out there at the next game, he wins.

Is easy to kick a man when he's down. Step out there after a win because if you don't go back out there until another loss. Well, I think you get my drift.

You wacky guys you.

Bad teams make winning a lot harder than it looks. Goods ball movement, offensive and defensive rebounding, knocking down clutch shots for momentum, going with a starting line up that can set a game tempo early, block shots, and killing your opponent every opportunity you can are all the essentials to winning basketball. Lebron tried to establish a tempo but the Knicks would not have any of that. Oh, Mr Gibson with your career night on opening night was almost non-existent to great Knick team defense.

Ok. I know Isiah struck a cord with questioning their desire and heart on the court. It looked as if they were highly motivated on the court last night. Can they consistently keep that up every night? Can they settle on a starting line up that will work and set a game tempo in favor of the Knicks? As coach and GM Zeke has to tell the players that what works we are going to stick to and use for a winning formula.

If Lee starts to win games. Then Lee should start if they continue to win games when he starts. He earned it in place of Curry starting. May the best tempo player start regardless of contract and ego. Period. Plus, with all the even scoring Lee starting will mean most of the Knicks will still get their shots. A bench player on this team is just as important as a starting player at times. So if Curry rides the bench he will still get minutes and his in the paint points. If Steph comes off the bench he can still contribute. It's not like a bench player is out casted on this team. But tempo and early leads are essential for this Knick team to survive and winning basketball. And keep the best defensive units on the court to preserve the leads.

sec11rowH?-you were right on the Alan Houston rule. Too bad.

What a pleasure seeing our boys play cohesive basketball for a change.

Can Q keep up his nice shooting? He hasnt put together a stretch of games that shows he can.

David Lee..What can I say? Good game! Dont hesitate on those wide open jump shots, the more you take the better you'll get.

Jamal. You are so inconsistant it boggles my mind. Great game, keep up the effort, take smart shots!

Good defensive effort, sneakers were squealing, bodies were flying..Wait a minute..

Did you guys see eddie curry attempting to block shots? Jumping high for rebounds?

Lets cease our chants for 2 days, lets soak in a nice win!

Charlotte is beyond beatable, lets do it!

Don't usually want to jump to conclusions, but as it's been said the PG sets the tone. When the tone set is one of hustling, passsing the ball and playing defense, the team responds. Other than putting a gun to someones head all Isiah can do is talk and hope it sinks in.

Players have guranteed money coaches don't. If the player doesn't by in to what the coach wants, the coach goes before the players do (see Byron Scott dealings with J-Kidd in Jersey). Kidd wanted Franks and Ed Jordan and Scott are elsewhere. No one has labeled Kidd a coach killer.... yet.

Hopefully Isiah's words of playing for the front of the Jersey rather than the back sinks in. we'll see.

You have to admit, they look good when they play the right way..

No its not just u brandonm the Knicks do play better without Marbury, because without him the leaders become clear on the team. The direction and focus becomes clear on the team. The playbook is more likely to be followed, and Fred Jones a team guy gets on the floor more. I hate to kick a man while he is down but Marbury has never been a team player, he's is a career individual and it becomes more apparent when the Knicks play without him. I would also like to point out that Isiah and others have eluded to the fact that the Knicks lack leaders on the court but, when he turned to Crawford as a leader and asked him to find out whether he and the rest of the Knicks wanted Stephon not to play in the infamous Phoenix trip he undermined his team and Crawfords leadership... He sh*tted on the idea of the team holding each other accountable... SEE THE PROBLEM...

The Knicks are a better team without Marbury, but when will we get rid of him is the question...

Honestly, Dolan should seize the moment. Buy out Marbury and give him the optioon to stay near the family or sign with another team.

He can't blame MSG for sending him away during a grieving period and write a tell all book.

Steph, thanks for your time. Isiah once said he'd trade his own mother if it made the team better. Put up Zeke. Send him home with his XMAS bonus early.

I would have absolutely loved to hear FIRE ISIAH chants last night. Not booing, not hatred for the players who busted their asses . . . but some nice FIRE ISIAH chants, just to show him that one win does not make amends for his terrible job.

@BAZ...i signed the pink slip, for me, for alan (really you can't seriously ask him to do that), for all of us in here who are overwhelmed with the frustration of seeing our beloved knicks destroyed by this inept, psycho-babbling, sexual harrassing embarrassment of a human being. i still can't fathom it: how is it POSSIBLE that this guy is the face of basketball in the mecca of the sport?

so Q shot well for a night. and jamal got hot. and lee found his hops. and n8 had an inner-body experience. do you really believe this jerk will do the right thing and leave curry and starjerk on the bench? of course he won't, his legacy is tied to those two acquisitions. enjoy the high while it lasts, 'cause like any good drug, you'll be crashing down soon enough. the nightmare has only just begun (anybody really know why starjerk didn't practice on tuesday and didn't play on wednesday?).

Well written, and well said.

If I were the Knicks I would look at potential free agents that will be available. Josh Smith is young, can play defense, another slam dunk champion, but moreover he plays with heart. The Knicks have to at least look into if is going to test the waters out side of ATL. Josh Smith is in the final year of his contract. I would give up Curry, Jefferies, Morris, Collins for a shot at sign and trade with the Hawks.

Just ride out the season. You'll be o.k. It might be a good time to take up yoga. let the young guys play. Keep Marbury away if possible. I'd rather have a young team playing hard and lose than trade the future for a washed up veteran and a bad contract.

That my friends was scott laydens method. Knicks 2010.

You guys would be better off starting a Lebron campaign to woo him away when he is a free agent. Remove Marbury, Insert James and your golden. But why would he (or any other free agent) want to play for a team who gets better treatment on the road? From fans and media.

How many years did it take the Bulls to rebuild with cap space and draft picks? Cleveland was absent for how long before last year? How about Golden State? There are some internal struggles going on? Relax, have a drink, surf you tube.

It shall be well.

On a lighter note:

D-Nichols assigned to Iowa Energy of the D-league.

Stephon has been around long enough to get the message. He just hasn't chosen to receive it. I defended him for a long time, but he has shown this year that he needs more than a demotion from starting. I would bench him. If, as I expect, he shows disrespect for that then put him on the inactive list. It's way to late to hope that playing him will make him more appealing for a trade! Eddie Curry may still have another shot, but he needs to get the message hard and clear. Play the way you can or forget about it!

Not seeing much of Curry was like an early Christmas present. Although 5 rebounds in 17 minutes must be a record for him. I could tolerate him as a spot player off the bench, with a quick hook when he is racking up fouls or t.o.'s. Forget about the contract, the lost lottery picks - that's done. Isiah has to use what he has, and the early returns suggest less Curry = better play.

Last night's uplifting win was different from out other few wins - we actually blew someone out. the Knicks are not a great shooting team, and the other times they've won, its taken over 50% shooting (way above the season average) to pull out a close one. Last night they shot really well, but that only contributed to the margin - they could have shot closer to their team average and still won the game. Funny what happens when a cohesive, unselfish bunch is allowed to play together. Maybe Isiah is learning - maybe he has finally reached the strategic awareness of a bitty ball coach (I'll play my most productive players!)

BAZ - does your mocking of the protest mean that you are satisfied with Isiah's tenure with the Knicks? Just wondering.

AR - Even if Smith decided to test the waters, how will the Knicks afford him? The mid-level isn't getting it done.

Step up and push to get Isiah removed!

Honestly I'm sick and tired of the beating Marbury takes. If the Knicks manage to win a game without Marbury and all of a sudden they play better without him. What about the multiple games they lose without him? Marbury or lack of Marbury is not the reason for the losses or wins respectively, this is a TEAM game. Is it Marbury's fault that Curry, Zach, Jerome, QRich, and others come to camp out of shape unprepared to play? Is it Marbury's fault when Curry drops or fumbles a crisp pass out of bounds? Is is Marbury's fault when Zach turns his back on the player he's defending allowing an open 3? Is it Marbury's fault when Crawford turns into Billy the Kid and starts gunning from half court? By now you get my point, everyone must be held accountable, not just one person. Marbury is always being persecuted for being selfish when in reality he's one of the most unselfish players statistically in NBA history. I agree his personality at times leaves a lot to be desired, but the criticism of him is sometimes too biased for me to digest. I was the first to assassinate his character for leaving the team the way he did, but I was also the first and probably the only person to give the guy credit for trying to play the day after he buried his father. Having lost a father, I was impressed by his will to play, it showed me he cared for his teammates more than the fans understand. It showed that maybe once again we judged him prematurely, blaming him for everything cause of his enormous contract and even larger than life attitude.

Bottom line if they play as a unit, they win. If guys play with effort both sides of the floor for 48 minutes, they will win more than they lose and their losses will still be filled with effort and heart just the way the coach wants it.

Maybe we expected too much from Q too soon. Maybe he is just playing himself into shape now. Too early to tell. But there have been encouraging signs lately. Last night was just the best example. Imagine what it means to this team if he comes back to the level he was at last year before he got hurt.

Similarly with Lee – he didn’t seem 100% at the beginning of the year, did he? Remember that he wasn’t completely over his injury in Vegas last summer. I wonder if it’s taken him a while to get back to last year’s level, too.

This is a very different team if both Q and Lee are playing at last year’s level. THEN you add Artest and a PG . . . and this is a legitimate team.

Here’s the bottom-line on Isiah. The fact that he’s done a better job than Layden is not sufficient reason to keep him employed at MSG. My grandmother could have, and she barely spoke English. Some of you think he’s wonderful. That’s your privilege. The sad fact is that after 4 years (this week) we’re one of the 3 worst teams in the league going nowhere fast. We all keep waiting – hoping – that will change. One win doesn’t do it. You can’t get too high off one win, or too low off one loss. The problem is there’s been a LOT more losses than wins.

I respect the fact that Isiah has given himself 2 weeks to turn things around. Most GMs in the league wouldn’t have been so generous, but last year the team responded when it appeared as though Isiah was under the gun (from Dolan). Maybe they will again this year. I don’t care why it happens. If he can show some improvement, great. He’s bought himself some time. Otherwise, though, if he doesn’t, could things possibly be any worse? Get rid of Isiah and let’s start fresh. There’s talent to work with here. Maybe Isiah’s talent is assembling it . . . but not getting it to work together. If the team seems better than their record, it’s the coach’s fault.

They can avoid the Luxury tax if Stephon Marbury's contract is bought out before next season. That would have to be the first move. Dolan is making other teams better by going further over the cap the Knicks have to pay a luxury tax which ends up to lower market teams pockets. Let Go Knicks! I say the NBA should do away with the salary cap. Let the big market teams sign the Arod's of basketball. But, rules are rules. Zeke's team needs play well enough so that trade value will increase for players he wants to deal. Thats why playing time is a concern for some of the younger guys to show case their potential to other teams that may want to deal. But, to do that the team would have to focus on rebuilding and I don't know if they want to go that route. I don't know the numbers but Isiah has shaved off some of Layden's baggage. Remember that to deal you have two parties that are interested in equal value. let just wait an see what happens.

Alan,

Great blog entry. I agree completely. As I mentioned before, I don't get to see the Knicks as much as I would like, not having the Season Pass and now on the left coast, but it has driven me crazy that Thomas doesn't do what's obvious to us all.

Play the guys that play hard, sit the ones that don't.

I realize this is a business and there are politics involved, but if Thomas' job is safe under Dolan, then do what we all know is the right thing - give the minutes to the players that truly deserve them.

Lee should be playing 40/night. Crawford should be getting 40/night. Bench Curry, bench Marbury, keep Q on the wing, give Randolph his 35/night splitting time at the "5" and "4" and import a PG that can distribute (Andre Miller?). If not, give N8 some time, and just roll with him. He's a crowd pleaser and always plays with energy.

Sure, it isn't the most talented starting 5, and still lacks a defensive presence, but it's a hell of a lot better than watching an out-of-shape Curry stumbling up and down the floor. Same with Marbury (with apologies given his recent loss), who just doesn't want to play the team game.

Bench 'em, and bring in the crowd pleasers who are willing to work.

Brian

Brian - why not? Seemed to work last night.

AR - I'd love for Smith to somehow find his way to the Knicks.

this is probably what makes this season so frustrating. every once in a blue moon the team puts up a gem like this and makes fans dream of what should/could be. let's not get ahead of ourselves until this team shows 48 minutes of effort game after game. having said that, it sure was nice to see. hate to say it, but with curry and marbury out of the lineup the ball moves around quicker, the defense is stronger and the energy is high. isiah really needs to find more minutes for lee, balkman, robinson because their energy is infectious.

IT IS TRUE THAT THE KNICKS PLAY BETTER WITHOUT CURRY AND STEPH...

energy is kinetic...people generally feed off the energy and emotions of the other group members.

STEPH AND CURRY EXUDE NEGATIVE ENERGY

Steph-because he is a selfish me first player...and curry because he is a low energy, lethargic type of guy

THIS KIND OF ATTITUDE LEADS TO POOR EXAMPLES FOR A TEAM

WHEN YOUR "CAPTAIN"(isiah must have been on mushrooms when he named his captains) ACTS LIKE THEY DON;T CARE THAT CARRYS OVER TO THE TEAM

IF YOUR CAPTAIN IS 6'11 AND CAN'T GET MORE THAN 4 REBOUNDS WHAT DOES THAT SAY TO YOUR TEAM?

GM isiah is putting coach isiah in a difficult postion.

IF HE BENCHES HIS PRIZE ACQUISITION EDDY THE "CAPTAIN" CURRY IT MAKES ISIAH THE GM LOOK LIKE A BAFOON....(which he is by the way)

FOR THE GOOD OF THE TEAM I HOPE HE PLAYS THE GUYS WHO ARE PLAYING HARD!

ALL I WANT IS EFFORT...IF GUYS PLAY HARD GOOD THINGS WILL HAPPEN!

Pete-I am for Isiah staying on. Yes.

I am for Marbury going.

I am for Collins, N8, Lee, Balkman, Jones getting more minutes.

I think a Curry trade if needed should happen in the off-season when we see how the draft lottery turns out.

I am for tweaking the Knicks just a little to get comliment players strenghts and weakness. This team does not have the right players.

Isiah is no the only GM to gamble of Steph, the so called recommended Colangelo did once as well.

This core is better talent tahn what we started with.

Last year was supposed to be an assessment yeat of what we had. Now this early in the season everyone wants to knee jerk to the extreme decision.

We are two seasons away from a respectable salary cap and flexibility.

I remember who we had and the make up of the team when Isiah made his transactions.

Stay the course. See who plays well together, hard, and are winners.

This team and not this season is not the end all be all to a championship.

What is a new GM/Coach going to do? Play who? Trade who for what other player? Draft who?

Or maybe give away young talent for another overpaid long term contract and keep us around 90 mil for another 6 years?

The protest is short sighted. Making Isiah the problem because the solution is not going to happen overnight, no matter who you bring in.

For those who call for firing Isiah, if he turns this team around in two years change your blog names so i don't call you out.

I might throw a protest and give you all pink slips.

In the words of a forgotten and lost BARF-just bloggin'

my typing was horrible. my bad.

Thanks NYC for telling it like it is. The only problem with Steph is that he is not 6'8" and 250 lbs. He can't get in those big guys face and tell them he'll slap the sh*t out of them if they don't pick up there game. But the "Tru Warrior" can. I hope the Knicks are able to acquire Artest this year. He is the leader this team desperately needs. Sacramento may as well get something for him because he will opt out next year and will be in MSG wearing # 93.

Hey are you Isiah haters, why don't you go spew some of your venom at Roger Clemens? This talk of protesting him and the Knicks is getting ridiculous. I'd bet if the Knicks had the best record in the East, you'd still be trying to get rid of him because of the way he did your boy Larry Brown.

damn.

It's becomee painfully clear that there is a vendetta going in NY. It is being fueled by what passess for 'sport reporters' who use their access to the online, Print and TV medium to promote and and encourage their own petty agendas. They have started a feeding frenzy and revel in the media mess that they have created by encoraging the unemployed fans with no life fans to act out to get their 15 minutes of fame and a TV interview. Vescey writes an article trashing the Knick and then shows up
on NBA TV to repeat and enforce his views. The same for the Daily News writers who now have an outlet on SNY and Wednesday they Inserted 'fire Isiah banners in NY' hometown paper.
as always the QuiteFrrankly/Booyah networks.

NY Fans being the most knowledgeable has long been exposed as a myth. NY having the top SPorts courage has died also. Maybe it's because with so many reporters they all need something to write. 20 get in the editors room and he says 'okay you 5 write about firing Isiah today, you five trash the Knicks players and owner and tell the janitor we need a story about how the Nets have only TWO more wins have have lost to the Knicks TWICE.

NY SPorts coverage has become a bad reality show. Full of obnoxious AH's that won't shut up and always know where the camera is.

I think what’s painfully clear is that any view that’s so simplistic – whether anti-media or anti-Isiah – can’t be taken seriously. I find no more credibility in the notion of a monolithic media conspiracy than I do in the fact that Isiah’s tenure has been a total failure. Of course it hasn’t been. This is a much better team than we had when he got here. Whether or not he deserves to be fired, however, is another story. I believe he does. When you weigh the plusses and the minuses, the good and the bad . . . he’d be long gone if there were any other franchise and any other owner. Justifiably so. I believe. My opinion.

But the same has to be done with the media. See, that’s the problem with denouncing the so-called media without any qualifications. Of course there have been massive mistakes and bad moves made. It’s the job of the press to report that. If you think there is also bias, the responsible thing to do is filter through the reporting and distinguish between what’s objective and what’s driven by bias. But all the criticism of the Knicks/Isiah can’t be media conspiracy when the team has so many problems. It doesn’t make sense.

That said . . . this might be my last chance to say happy Christmas. I hate following the NBA through the International Herald Tribune. For years, my family rates trips by whether or not I take my computer. For once, I don’t have work to do, so the only reason I’d bring it would be to keep up with the NBA. Haven’t decided yet. Leaving in an hour.

Just in case . . . Happy holidays everybody.

Was there something wrong with my comments Alan? Just let me know, I'm not an abusive blogger nor am I trying to be. I just want to contribute to the place.

I think Trane and some of the other bloggers who remember me will attest to that.

I just want to know if it was a technical problem, or something I said.

Ben - check the new security code below. You have to copy it in the box below it, or your post doesn't go through. Might that have been the problem? I can't imagine there's any other reason why you'd be censored.

Sure, I remember you. Nice to hear from you. We had some good conversations. But I gotta go. See you in a week. Happy christmas . . .

Merry Christmas Trane, I hope everythings well with you (other than obvious blunders our team has been having)....I did put the security code in, then it went to a page that said it was waiting to be approved. But my last post didn't, so I'm guessing that was just a one time thing. Just upsetting because I had wrote something that I felt all Knicks fans needed to read....I'm kind of laughing about it now because I guess I should know better than to invest that much into a post.

the nets have TWO less losses and THREE more wins than the KNicks and have lost to the Knicks TWICE. THe Nets have als had their share of blow out losses (4 by 20 points or more) if the diffrence in treatment is not racially motivated because Franks looks like John Boy Walton than what is it... fans still upset the Larry Brown got canned sfte a 23 win seaaon?(with essentially the same team they won 33 last year). I even saw one reporter write that wins don't matter just make the change.... real sports insight...

not a 'simplistic' view but this is just sports lets all lighten up and enjoy the holiday
