Stern Words for Dolan, Knicks

Just another day in the life, Fixers. As one NBA executive said to me yesterday, "Got to be weird to cover things over there, huh?"

Weird? I love weird. I live for it. This stuff just follows me around. I mean, look at how ordinary the Islanders have become since I left that beat! They're just a regular franchise now, run well and respected and going about their business. During my time there? Absolute chaos on a daily basis.

And I loved it. Never a dull moment.

The Knicks were already a disaster when I got here, but man my arrival was like the nor'easter that met the tropical depression. I'm like the dude on the Weather Channel in the rain slicker tethered to a lamp post while I'm filming my report in gale force winds.

Squalls up to 50 feet! Squalls, I tell ya! And this is only the beginning! This is awesome! Back to you in the studio, Alexandra and, may I add, looking good as usual.

As I was saying, today was just a typical day:

In the media workroom at the MSG Training Center this morning, a group of reporters stood around the TV watching ESPN and awaiting the Jeremy Schaap interview with David Stern with tape recorders aimed at the speaker. One reporter joked that the minute the segment would come on, the Knicks PR guy would open the door to invite us in to watch practice.

Sure enough.

It couldn't have been coincidence, could it?

stern.jpgRegardless, we remained glued to the TV to hear Stern's comments about the Knicks. The Commish had been rather gentle in his public thoughts about the ugly sexual harassment trial and all of the lurid events that came with it. He took some heat for it and clearly he decided to offer a glove-slap on the day the NBA season opened. Schaap asked Stern about the tarnished image of the Knicks franchise coming out of the trial and what it meant. Stern pulled back the arrow and let it fly.

“It demonstrates that they’re not a model of intelligent management," Stern said.

Bulls eye.

Not the first time Stern has had to publicly reprimand the Knicks organization (which makes you wonder how many times he's done it in private).

Click the Knicks page link to see my story for Wednesday's paper for the full report, including Isiah Thomas' take and what this lingering black cloud could mean for everyone involved.

And yet all I can do is sing....(this one goes out to my seating chart neighbor, Ho-Beck):

Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives
and I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

The Knicks' opening night opponent, the Cleveland Cavaliers, inked one of their two holdout free agents, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Sasha Pavlovic signed a three-year deal for about $4 million to $5 million per. He's missed all of training camp, however, so it remains to be seen if he'll be ready for Friday's game. But he will be in uniform.

The Cavs are still without Anderson Varejao and the Beacon Journal says he and the team are still far apart in negotiations. You can bet Eddy Curry welcomes this news. Last season Curry was often frustrated by Sideshow Bob's active defense (not to mention his penchant for flopping). Maybe it's just a hair thing, but I'm gonna miss the opportunity to see Varejao and Renaldo Balkman battle for a rebound.

Cleveland was reportedly interested in bringing in Juwan Howard (who was released by the T-Wolves), but it sounds more like Juwan will wind up in Dallas.

As some of you have noted, the Cavaliers did add someone we all know well: rookie Demetris Nichols. We knew he'd land on his feet somewhere in the NBA. How fitting he lands with the team the Knicks play first. Let's see if he gets any floor time, but good for D-Nick.

fran328.jpgSpeaking of people we knew well....

Did you all see that Stevie Francis is already grumbling in Houston? Seems he's not in the guard-heavy Rockets' rotation and that has The Franchise upset. Rick Adelman said he had planned for Francis to be a starter, but didn't come to camp in the best condition.

Wonder where the Rockets will send Steve for his "rehab" stint for that knee problem he tends to have when he's not playing and coaches don't want him infecting their bench during games?

* *

kobe2.jpgThe Kobe Bryant stuff will dominate the NBA news as the first week of the season gets underway. We know Chicago is in play, but who's on deck? Ernie Grunfeld shot down a rumor that the Wizards would offer Gilbert Arenas. Mark Cuban isn't going to give up Dirk Nowitzki, but would love to have him come play with him. Phoenix? I thought the owners there were looking to save money, not spend it. Would Kobe agree to come to the Nets and play with Jason Kidd? Maybe if there was a shovel in the ground in Brooklyn. But until that day comes, no one really believes they're ever going to leave the swampland oblivion.

Some people -- my boy Ken Berger included (and I have much respect for K-Berg) -- won't let go of the notion that the Knicks are still in the running. Fixers, I urge you to move along.

Isiah Thomas, who in May at the Orlando Pre-Draft camp spoke giddily when Kobe made his initial trade request, refuses to talk about it, even a little. Even with a smile. A hint of something, a gleam in his eye.

Not this:

“You have to ask the Lakers . . . It’s happening in their house with their player. They’ll speak and talk about their player.”

Or this:

“We never comment on anything like that. The Lakers speak for their players.”

Knowing Isiah, there's no way he'd be this low-key if he felt he was in on something. Berger reported this a while back, but there was indication that Kobe wants nothing to do with the Big Apple Circus the Knicks have become.

Of course the Ron Artest trade rumors have resurfaced now that Mike Bibby is out for a while and the Sacramento Kings appear to be headed for a major makeover . . .

Alan, you're a funny dude. You have a good analysis of things and the added humor is appreciated.

Just watched the Lakers game and Kobe. The crazy thing about him is that he is always the best option on offense and its too hard to call someone elses number. It's a blessing and a curse at the same time. The rest of the team has no balls to do anything when he is around. He is so much better then the next guy you just can't bypass him for the sake of the team. Only Shaq could command similar respect, or fear. Kobe is way too strong for any NBA team. He is in his own league.

i hope after ten games we can blog giddily about the knicks.

Alan, isn't it interesting that David Stern doesn't believe that the Knicks have exhibited "intelligent management," when under his watch, there's a referee who fixed games? Maybe those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones?

Having said that, I hope the Knicks can get to where the Islanders are. Just a smart, well run organization, not making any stupid news. As it is, I believe that this is Isiah's last year, and perhaps even Dolan's. The team is not built to do any more than win 38 games or so, and that will likely not be enough to squeek into the playoffs.

With Bibby down, makes you think Jared Jordan or Dan Dickau would have been attractive throw-in trade pieces for them

F Francis. his dour mood affected the Knicks as much as Brown. HOW LONG UNTIL HE FAKES ANOTHER INJURY!

It's interesting to me how Stern is always punishing the knicks to set some example. I remember the playoffs when he suspended half the team including several key players who never engaged in the fight that took place in Miami.

Of course when the Lakers did the same thing it was ok to bend the rules since Shaq wasn't involved in the battle so they ended up suspending the right players.

Now he wants to attack the knicks for Misconduct in management basically calling them stupid. But when it comes to half his refs gambling ,which is a violation of their contracts, Stern claims the guidelines were outdated and "ridiculous".

I guess he and his mismanagement team weren't smart either. The integrity of the entire league is a way more important issue then sexual harrassment...(which wasn't proven) Kobe's case had jailtime at stake but this is worse.(sarcasm)

Remember folks OJ was proven innocent in a court of Law so get off the whole "The jury has spoken" bit and recognize that having Isiah in court these days is like having Saddam in court , why waste time and money when we know everyone hates him and will not decide in his favor no matter what.

Why did the Rutgers coach apologize...
Al Sharpton backed off for a reason...
I guess none of you were ever accused of something you didn't do and I'm not talking about a criminal act ,anything , big or small.

I believe Isiah said "what , no love for me today"
I believe he used profanity in her presence.
I belive he might have called her a B***H once.
I don't believe he sexually harrassed her.
HER AND NO OTHER WOMEN , why her, of all the women he's ever been around.

Maybe David Stern should stop reading the papers and get the facts from Isiah. Transcripts from the trial and then make a statement. Watch the whole 7 hour Taped deposition instead of commenting on 11 minutes in which the media played 30 seconds of, we would all look bad if 30 second of the worst moments of our lives were on the news.

Stern once said that the ref scandal "is the worst situation I've been involved with".

THEN ACT LIKE IT AND STOP DEFLECTING.

"Back to you in the studio, Alexandra and, may I add, looking good as usual."

Got to be careful Alan - could be misconstrued as sexual harassment nowadays :) lol

David Stern's just mad that Chuck Dolan's punk hired such a lousy legal team.

The Rapist was his usual self last night. Tossed in 45. Bricked 19 of 32 shots in the process. And lost. Just proves what everyone has long known: Shaq led the Lakers to three titles. The Rapist merely assisted. Shaq was Batman; The Rapist a mere Robin. Shaq wins championships. The Rapist only wants to score points. But if he wasn't selfish, arrogant, and misguided, he would not be The Rapist.

I would enjoy seeing Demetris Nichols jam over Jerome James. Then go to the line and sink the free throw. Just for the sake of Isiah Thomas, found liable by a jury of his peers on multiple charges of workplace sexual harassment. James would probably come out of the game. With a sore knee. And order a pizza with everything. Delivered right to the bench.

Adam L, Jared Jordan and Dan Dickau? For what: three dozen jockstraps and the Laker Girls calendar from last season?

Finally, I quickly scanned the comments and came across this one from starburyfan:

"i hope after ten games we can blog giddily about the knicks."

starburyfan giddy? Yikes. That would turn just about anyone's stomach.

Do we still have a shot at Artest?

Our 2 & 3 positions are suspect.
Crawford is inconsistent/defense liability.
Q is an injury waiting to happen/inconsistent.
Balkman and Jefferies can't shoot.
Nate had two good preseason games but take it easy.
Chandler isn't ready.

Since this is Isiah last year and probably last NBA job, he might as well go all out and take the chance.

DFTT

Kobe stay the heck away from NY...we don't want you if we have to trade half the team!

How much does it say that Chi-town won't let Deng go for Kobe!

Also, Stern is an idiot!!!

Wouldn't it be funny if he has to hand the championship trophy to Isiah this year...lol ! What would he say them?

Stern: ehem....Is this true the Knicks..won?..Ehm....cough...slurp...Its my honor to present to you...Wow...the 2007-2008 champions of the world... The NY Knicks!

Another thing, I'm a clown and not one to be takend seriously. If you do---then you and inane clown just like Mike Lupica, and Mitch Lawrence.

Btw, I'm Mark, and please do not disturb me, I meditating here:

Don't feed the trolls. (DFTT)

Sorry for the for the missing words---I was flushing my brain on my internet page. see url

This is the place where my mighty inferior thoughts originates. Be in fear Knick fans, I am Mark and you are not. So get use to it!

Alan – what do you mean “Click on the Knicks page link . . . “? Couldn’t find the link, or the article when I went to site. What am I doing wrong?

Nice piece Alan (on the blog). And I’m sure it accurately reflects the attitude on 33rd Street these days. But am I the only one a little disturbed by this “winning cures everything” philosophy? I’m just glad I don’t have a 14 year old on the junior varsity at a city high school at the moment, looking to his home team for inspiration. I have no problem believing this is the prevailing attitude at MSG. And I can certainly understand why everyone connected with MSG would want to do everything possible to distance themselves from the lingering stench of last summer’s trial . . . and verdict. However messy that trial was (and I’m on record many times as saying I thought both sides lost) . . . the accusations at least were very serious. Then what happens if they lose on appeal? Is winning still EVERYTHING? The only thing? I have no doubt that wins will turn boos into cheers. I’m just a little concerned about what it means. Is this really the message we want to send to our kids?

I’m sorry Dolan didn’t make the same choice with this law suit that he made with all those terrible contracts – namely, throw money at them to make them go away. I’m aware of all the justifications for face-saving and justice. And I know this makes me sound like a curmudgeon.

But no matter how this shakes out . . . it’s gotta be hurting the team in the short-term. It’s not as though this team needed any extra pressure going into this season. That’s all. And whatever you think about what happened in that court room, it seems clear at this point there's more pressure on this team as a result. They don't need this.

PS -- DFTT

Legend,

According to your above post I guess Stern has something against the Suns as well ? The "no leaving the bench" rule has always been open to interpretation.

they're about talk about the Knicks on Outside The Lines on ESPN... Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure none of its about basketball.

There is something a little suspicious about Stern playing so fast and loose with his rules where the refs are concerned (break the rules? No problem, we’ll just change the rules) . . . but choosing not to give an inch with Phoenix. If there was ever a situation that cried out for somewhat more liberal interpretation and penalties . . . that was it. Here was an ideal situation for Stern to apply intent and recognize that the spirit of his rule was not being violated, even if the letter of the rule was.

Moreover, the application of the rule was so egregiously unfair. It’s insane that, if the Suns’ players got a 1-game, that Mr. Hip-Check only was suspended for 2. (It WAS only 2 games, right?) You’d think if the Suns’ players HAD to get a 1-game, Horry would have deserved 3-5. Minimum. But I don’t believe the Suns should have been suspended at all. Horry should have been suspended for 2-3 games. And that’s all. He caused it. It was intentional . AND it was dangerous. NONE of which was true with the Suns bench. They reacted quickly. Caught themselves. And at no time did they come close to getting hostile or menacing. The more I think about it, the more unfair it was. Besides, is Horry – no matter how important he is to that team – even a starter these days? I don’t think so. Two starters for a sub? C’mon.

It seems Stern has a more proprietary sense about his refs than he does about the players. He’s more protective of the refs. Which is insane when you think it’s the players who make the league great.

He had a chance to show a different kind of management in the Phoenix debacle, and he blew it. Especially when you consider how much was riding on that one ruling. You could argue the entire series turned around on that ruling.

If Stern had considered the effect of his ruling . . . he’d have realized he was rewarding San Antonio for that dangerous and intentional act of violence on the court.

I wouldn’t call Stern’s decision a “model of intelligent management.”

Ben -- good to see you back. I've been using your line. Even reducing it sometimes (to: DFTT) in the hopes that's even more dismissive. Sadly, it's come in handy. See if you don't find it useful.

Stern is making a lot of bad decisions after a pretty stellar run. The phoenix mess as discussed above. The complete failure to police the refs until the press got hold of it and then sweeping it under the rug. The disgracful fiasco in Seattle. Deciding to comment on the Knicks before it works through the courts.

Above all though is the ref situation where he has basically said cheating and gambling don't matter.

Hey, Trane: DFTT is my line!

No matter, tho. If it works, it works.

I prefer STFU but that's just me :)

The Phoenix Saga was almost as bad as the officiating debacle that took place when the Kings played the Lakers in game 6 of the West Conf. finals in 2002. That was a shame, and that was Sacramento's last chance for a very long time. There has to be room for Interpretation with the majority of rules that Stern has created. One situation cannot determine another exactly.

Don ADO – my most profound apologies. Genuinely. That’s terrible. It’s a cool line and you deserve credit. Certainly, STFU has a certain je ne sais quoi – let’s call it direct and unambiguous.

But, Don’t feed the trolls . . . that’s poetry, my man. (Although I shouldn’t put it that way, because this blog has been criticized in the past for its shameless use of street lingo . . . )

So I commend you both for your contributions to a worthy cause.

I could just use a little support when they’re needed.

New York had their Chance to get Ron Artest and they Blew it. Ron Artest is Staying in Sacramento However if Ron Artest is to be Trade it has to be for Equal Value. New York is Expecting to get Ron Artest Cheap and thats not Happening.

Enough of all this non-basketball issues.............Are you guys ready for some KNICKS basketball? Somebody, please give me an AMEN, if you agree!!!

Guys, I will only read, listen or watch issues pertaining to the Knicks on the court for the rest of this season..........

Lets talk about players performance, trades, coaches performance, what we need to do to get better, playoffs, regular season, allstar selections, who should start or not.........real Knicks basketball issue.

I am sick and tired of all this nonsense. The trial is over, lets move on. Enough is Enough!!!

David Stern needs to pay attention to his referees and leave the Knicks alone. He has enough on his plate with that mess. The Knicks will be alright Mister.........Why can't we just all get along, Mr Stern.

I am just looking forward to us making the playoffs and shutting up all the haters around the country, especially the media and those so called NBA experts picking against us.

To all true Knicks fan: In the words of Bob Marley, "Don't worry about a thing, because every little thing is going to be alright".

I predict we will make the playoffs and win in the first round!!

Where is Friday, lets play some real Knicks ball......... It is us against the world and I love it!!!

Knick's fan for life.........GO NY, GO NY, GO!!!

Trane - S'cool.

I try to employ either the phrase or the acronym (if i'm in a hurry) where needed.

Been off the blog more than on the last couple of days, though.

So here's a generic DFTT. Break glass in case of an emergency...

Today was my offday and Erik Boland filled in for me in the print edition for tomorrow. I'll be at practice on Thursday then it's off to LGA for the flight to Cleveland. The magical mystery tour begins.
I'll blog either from the gate or once I get to James-town.

Quick welcome to the blog and a scouting report.

Legend: Always hypocritical. Arguments never make any sense. Logic AWOL. Blindly loyal to Isiah Thomas, found liable by a jury of his peers on multiple charges of workplace sexual harassment, and Stephon Marbury, Born Again father, husband, and self-admitted under oath in a court of law Adulterer. Repeats the same dead argument over and over. Calls it The Truth. Gets prickly when questioned. Be gentle. At his best when the recipient of warm milk and his teddy bear.

++++++++++++++++

Let Ron Artest stay in Sacramento. With his defense attorney. His parole officer. And his personal bail bondsman.

THE LAST THING the Knicks need is Ron Artest, convicted criminal, operating out of the home team's locker room at the Garden.

Ron Artest: Pure cancer. Let him play with The Rapist in La-La Land. That I would pay to see. Ron-Ron might actually put his thug skills to good use as a Laker and KermitWashington The Rapist for the good of the game.

This one's for you, Don ADO:

Don't feed the trolls. (DFTT)

yea Trane I can't take credit for that line, but how about "Don't Let The Midgets Grow"...nah thats not politically correct, I would have to call them "little people" . "Don't Let the Little People Grow" ...hmmm...doesn't have that same oomph. Oh well, the trolls aren't getting any food from me though.

Ben Wogu - I love it -- thanks, man. Besides, can't trust those little people any farther than you can throw them. OOPS. Bad joke. But you're right. Doesn't have the same oomph. As long as you starve the trolls . . . we'll be fine. Keep up the good work. (Hope I got the name right this time.)

Season underway. The W's and L's are about to be counted. Looking forward to Saturday's blog. DFTT.

Ben,

Make sure to ask Choo-Choo about Marquette Warriors basketball.

Oh, Choo-Choo is a wiz on Al McGuire quotes. (He's had enough of an education in this area.) Just ask him.

Now do not disturb me----I'm meditating!

These great and suberb thoughts of mine do not come easily when dissing the Knicks and destroying this blog.

If you must, you can find me here, my place of dwelling:

LGK

Yea, right---get a grip!

Consider the mood-swing from draft night to today. What happened? Draft night starts with Boston making a move, then – can’t be denied – Isiah trumps it. Without even going into how we got Francis to begin with, that trade – on that day, for that contract plus Frye . . . receiving a premier 20-10 power forward in return . . . was a coup.

There was a buzz about the Knicks there hadn’t been for years. Some of it even seemed justified.

This isn’t intended to discuss the trial specifically, because that’s only one contributing factor. I’m still more excited about this season than in any other this millennium . . . but it’s not the same. What kind of effect will it have on the younger players when the commissioner trashes the franchise on ESPN? Or the on-going appeal? I’m not even addressing what’s accurate and what’s not. In what Stern said, the jury verdict, etc. But there seems to be a cumulative effect that’s cast a pall over this team. To revisit yesterday’s post, I don’t like the idea that winning cures everything. But it’s a LOT better than the alternative. So it’s a great place to start.

Interestingly, this season is going to be a test of how good a coach Isiah is. The roster is flawed, but filled with talent, none the less. Yet it’s not going to gel on its own. It’s going to need offensive and defensive sets geared to the talent on the floor. It’s up to Isiah to design rotations that complement his bench-full of talent.

I think he proved last year he can rally the troops . . . get them to support him and their team. That’s not going to be enough if he wants to win more games than he loses. He’s going to have to out-play a lot of teams (43, to be exact).

Welcome to 2007-2008, gentlemen. The goal this year: The Knicks HAVE to play more than 82 games.

Good luck, everyone . . .

I know, DFTT but,

Mark, The Rapist?
What happened to your faith in the legal system?

Gentlemen – I can’t urge you strongly enough to refrain from responding to him. Obviously, it’s your right to post as you wish. But I honestly believe there is nothing to be gained from trying to be reasonable, or to respond to specifics.

Our only hope is to ignore, ignore, ignore.

Don’t read. Don’t respond. Just scroll past.

It may take a while, but even he will stop beating a dead horse. And go away. And if he doesn’t? We’ve still won. Because either way, we’ve exiled him from the Fixer blog . . . in spirit AND in substance.

The point is: JUST SCROLL PAST.

It’s a win-win situation for us. His posts will stand-alone, and have no impact on the blog as a whole. That’s another good set of initials: JSP. Just Scroll Past, guys . . . it’s the only answer.

Ignore, ignore, ignore. Or the poor lost trolls will keep coming round our door . . .

DFTT.

I have one particular concern for opening night (which I will be watching live and in person for only the second time in my life). Could we please agree to not boo the Knicks until at least the 3rd or 4th game? That is, if they warrant booing at all?

Hear me out. I understand they have been pretty atrocious for much longer than they should have been, but the past few seasons, when we have actually had decent talent (as opposed to starting Michael Sweetney and Shandon Anderson), we have been so quick to boo the Knicks in our own building that they can't even make one turnover without their home town fans getting on their case.

Home court advantage is way more important in basketball than it is in baseball or hockey, yet we seem intent on completely reversing that advantage. Why don't we at least give them a chance?

Now I know this is probably preaching to the choir here, with the exception of a few, but I really think this is important. I mean, I understand if you want to boo Isiah, I understand if you want to boo Dolan, and I will personally be booing Jerome James. But everyone else, no matter how many boneheaded plays they have made in the past, deserves to be given a fair shake. At least for a few games.

You might argue that they're handsomely rewarded professionals, and should be able to take a good ribbing in stride. And you might be right, but the fact remains that they're still human beings, and it still makes you feel better to be cheered than booed, gives you confidence, and helps your level of play.

So even if you HATE these guys individually, I'm assuming you're going to the Garden because you want to see the KNICKS win, right? Just look what happened to A-Fraud when the home crowd embraced him this year. Maybe we can have a similar affect on our squad.

Hudson - your assumption seems to be that everyone on this blog enjoys trashing the knicks. I don't think anything could be farther from the truth. If you were to read our on-going dialogue you would find there is a healthy balance of objectivity here. Where people feel free to criticize when warranted. But we also understand we come here for only one purpose – to support the team we love.

So I would, respectfully, reject the assumption that people who blog here need to be restrained from booing this team. But we also go into this season with eyes wide open. There are many unanswered questions. Yet I would say to you . . . if YOU are booing after 4 games, that seems a little trigger happy.

Give this team a chance. They may surprise you.

Hey Train,

Maybe this was the wrong place to post these thoughts, because I have actually been ecstatic to find that this is one of the only forums where people seem to give the Knicks any credit at all. That's why I said in my third paragraph, "Now I know I'm probably preaching to the choir..." because I know you guys DO want this team to win (again, for the most part, cough cough).

And, you're right, 4 games is too soon. I just don't want to happen what happened last year when I went to the opener, that is, audible groaning heard at the first sniff of a foul-up. This was more of a plea to the people who may read this blog, but not necessarily comment, and to those of us who, while we may be justifiably upset at the state of the team, really, in the end, want them to win.

Sometimes we forget the power we have as fans. That's all I'm trying to say.

Haha, my bad. I meant Trane. Sort of a tricky homophone there.

DFTT

Hudson - there is no "wrong" opinion. Except one that's mean to disrupt. You'll find a full spectrum here . . . from many who feel Isiah Thomas has taken a franchise in terrible shape and made it even more of a joke . . . to those who see both good and bad coming out of the last 4 years. Anyone who thinks there's unanimity or homogeneity of opinion here . . . well . . . doesn’t know how to read. But I can say that I haven't read any posts - at least not recently - from anyone nominating Isiah for God. But stick around . . . you never know . . .

What surprised me about your second post, however, is that in my experience, most of the blogs are overwhelming supportive of the Knicks and especially of their coach. If anything, in a more one-sided way than you’ll find here. I actually thought there was sarcasm in your first post. If I read it wrong, I apologize. Everyone is a little touchy . . . well, it should be obvious why . . . just read.

I think my choice of the word "forum" was wrong. Because what I was referring to were places that give people a forum to write about the knicks, specifically the mainstream media.

I haven't really been a blog reader until very recently. Up until about a month ago all I read were the Post, the News, Newsday, the Times, the Star Ledger, espn.com, etc.

So maybe there are a lot of positive Knicks blogs, but since I don't really read blogs all that much, I wouldn't know.

Can you tell that I'm bored at work, by the way?
