Thomas Stays
![]()
Citing the achievement of the "evident progress" he demanded last summer, Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan gave Isiah Thomas a contract extension to remain the team's president and coach. Dolan announced the multi-year extension on Monday at the team's training facility, while Thomas ran the team through practice.
"We said he had to solve this crisis," Dolan said, "and he did."
After a 23-win debacle under Larry Brown last season, the Knicks (29-34) are in the eighth-and-final playoff spot in the East with 19 games left in the season. Dolan said the team's performance over the past few weeks made him "absolutely convinced" Thomas should stay.
He will continue to hold both positions. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Thomas said he was happy with the extension, but "there's a lot of work still left to be done."
"The most important thing is we keep our team moving forward and we stay focused," Thomas said, "and continue to try to get into the playoffs."
I'll have more on this in tomorrow's paper.

Ony Dolan would look at a
team 5 games under 500, who
have had a myriad of lucky
last second wins as successfull. I hope they are proud to be in the 8 spot with their great record.
I grew up watching the Knicks, Starks, Ewing, Oakley, Smith.. They broke my heart and never won but they were a team to cheer for. Now we have a bunch of bums and coach with on an ego trip. Bring back a team to cheer for!
After Chaney, Wilkins, LB consistency is needed. Isiah maded some bad decisions ($30 mil for JJ) but so have a lot of teams. Nuggets may not make playoffs with NBA's top 2 scorers. He has a plan and is willing to stick with the kids and not bury them for the first mistake like LB did with Lee and Frye. This is a good decesion. But I know the NYC media "experts" will tell soon be telling us differently
Isiah has done a VERY good job with this team, but as usual so many fans are impatient and can't recognize a young and improving team when they see it. They look at the old knicks and forget the time it takes to build a team like that. This team shows guts and fights hard like isiah and that's a great sign of his leadership
Enjoy Knick fans. No playoffs and years of mediocrity to come. As soon as Dolan gets the negatives of the blackmail pictures zeke has of him he will be fired.
Isiah has made some bad moves, but he has done well in the draft. His gamble on Curry seems to be working too. I personally am a Knicks fan, but I hate Cablevision owning them. In fact I was rooting for the Knicks to fail earlier this season until I realized that all that would happen is Isiah would get fired and we would have to start all over. In the end Cablevision would own the team either way, so I figured I might as well root for my team.
Hahn, Isiah is becoming your new Milbury. Can't get rid of him, even if you try.
First the obvious: we all knew Isiah was going to stay so this news shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. Also, the Knicks (and Rangers for that matter) are in huge trouble as long as Dolan is in the background. The guy doesn’t have a clue and is one of the worst owners in sports.
Isiah has shown that he’s a pretty good coach, though I question some of his lineups (Rose and Jeffries in the same starting lineup, not starting Lee, not playing Balkman enough). He should get praise for teaching Marbury how to be more of a leader and getting him to play defense, getting Curry’s confidence up and play at an All Star caliber level, and he’s had success in the draft, mainly with Lee, to a lesser degree Frye, and hopefully with Balkman. He’s made so many bad moves in his tenure as GM, though, and I want him to be removed from that position and reaming on as coach only. I also want his coaching staff to improve as well.
I do question the timing of this announcement. I thought all along Dolan said he was going to wait until after the season to make a decision one way or another, so why the change the heart? Is it because if the season ended today the Knicks would be in the playoffs and Dolan was waiting for that exact time to do it? Possibly. I would’ve waited myself until after this season or when the Knicks get eliminated from the playoffs, whichever comes first, before making this announcement.
Anyway, the Knicks got to get to the 7th seed. I would love to play a team like the Wizards in the 1st round. Any team but the Pistons and the Knicks might have a chance to make a little noise.
