Maine gets cortisone shot, may not be enough
With John Maine telling Newsday that he recieved a cortisone shot in order to make last Saturday's start against the Astros, there's a very real possiblity that tomorrow's side session could be the last time he climbs a mound this season. Maine is going to need surgery anyway to shave down a bone spur in the back of his right shoulder, and if he is shut down early, the arthroscopic procedure could be done sooner rather than later.
That's not to say he's finished yet. If Maine can convince the Mets tomorrow that he will be effective Friday against the Marlins, maybe they'll let him give it another try. Maine apparently prevented Jerry Manuel from shutting him down permanently during a 20-minute meeting in the manager's office before Sunday's game.
But it seems the anti-inflammatory shot didn't do Maine much good, and that suggests he's going to struggle from here on out. His condition won't improve without surgery and the pain isn't going away.Remember, he's dealing with a rotator-cuff strain, too.

Time to see what Jon Neise can bring. The mets can't turn to Brian Stokes and Nelson Figoroua in these spots. Lets see what the kid's got!
He's way too valuable to take a chance on further injuring himself. And the way they've handled the Ryan Church situation, makes me really wonder if they know what they're doing.
We don't need anyone to pitch in Maine's spot until September anyhow...Due to the day off on Thursday, the rotation can reset on Friday with skipping Maine's turn and nobody gets moved up a day and then bring up Neise when rosters expand...DL Maine, activate Castillo and this way you don't lose Argenis (who is much better defensively than Castillo and Easley)...Maine is not effective right now...give him 15 days on the DL and then see if he regains anything in time for the playoffs...
This team worries about pitch count but will risk Maine's career by continuing to pitch him. What a bunch of hypocrites.
They made the same mistake with Church and it's only now he is getting back.
Heard a story about Maine. He went to the team doc and told him it hurts when he moves it like that (shows doc). Team doc pauses for a moment then replies,"Well John, don't move it like that!!"
Lenny I coudn't agree with you more. I really dont think the Mets know what they're doing, or know exactly what they're doing and risking it all to win this year.
Sure, that makes a ton of sense Lenny and Richie. A major league organization with a full medical training staff has no idea what they're doing. Since they just put Maine on the DL, I guess they do have a little bit of a clue of how to do their jobs. The thing with Church was a rare exception b/c it was dealing with concussions which vary from person to person and Church kept saying he was fine. You guys act like the Mets have a history of negligently sending out injured players and risking their careers.
Why would I need a medical degree to know that? It's common sense.
