Delgado for MVP?
Wow. I can't believe I just typed that.
But with all the MVP debate focused on David Wright or Jose Reyes lately, look who just entered the discussion after smacking home runs No. 29 and 30 in last night's 6-3 comeback win over the Phillies. Take a look at the numbers:
Delgado .. .263 BA ... .504 SLG ... .348 OBP ... 30 HR ... 93 RBI ... 74 R
Wright .... .291 BA ... .517 SLG ... .385 OBP ... 25 HR ... 100 RBI .. 93 R
Reyes .... .306 BA ... .489 SLG ... .365 OBP ... 13 HR ... 55 RBI .... 95 R
Here's another thing to consider -- no one has been more instrumental in the Mets' turnaround than Delgado. Since June 27, when the Mets began the day four games out of first place, Delgado leads the NL with 19 homers and 58 RBI.
Just something to chew on for those who wanted to RELEASE Delgado back in early June and replace him with Mike Carp. You know who you are. For more on Delgado, here's an entertaining look at his resurgence from our own Wallace Matthews. I especially enjoyed the elevator scene.
On another subject, I like Jimmy Rollins. He's a big-game player and a fun guy to interview. But he really has to stop with the whole "Mets celebrate too much" schtick. It's getting old. I'm happy to publish his quotes because they're amusing, but it's really no big deal if the Mets wants to have a little fun. They've definitely toned it down since last season, anyway.
Loved Jerry Manuel's quotes on the "demons" from last September. Hey Omar, extend Jerry now. He's already shown he's the right guy for this job.

I warned you all. I told you the Phillies would stomp us when it counted. I told you all that the Mets would CHOKE yet again. No bullpen, old men, unclutch players, highest payroll, no farm sysytem to pick from, bad contracts, etc. etc. etc. A bunch of over paid CHOKERS that walk away into the sunset losing yet again.
OMAR MUST BE FIRED !!!
...wait....what?...the Mets won last night?.."old man" Delgado has 30 HRs now and might be an MVP candidate, along with Wirhgt and Reyes?..Santana is one of the best pitchers in the NL after another quality start ?..."no Farm System" Murphy got a huge CLUTCH hit last night off the "best closer" in the NL?...2-8 Ayala got a 1-2-3 save in the 9th?...Reyes and Beltran had 3 hits each?...Church is healthy and playing great again?...the mets are 10-5 against the Phillies now this year?...
WOW, I really DON'T know what I'm talking about. I guess I should crawl back into a hole again until I can find something else to complain about.
Isn't Jimmy Rollins the guy who has talked trash before each of the last two seasons, claiming that the Phillies were the team to beat and calling Beltran "mr. silent" and a plagiarist? These complaints about celebrations need to stop - everyone in the league does it in one way or another.
I actually thought that same thing last night after the win. I really think Delgado is this team's MVP to date. I think Wright's numbers are a little inflated, because he should have that many RBIs when all he needs is Reyes to get on base and steal second, then the number two hole moves him over and all Wright needs is a SAC fly. Easiest RBI you could get, well i guess the easiest after a bases loaded walk :)
Guess all my Delgado bashing early on came back to bite me. Oh well, good for him and good for the Mets.
Delgado's been on fire for 2 months, no doubt, but you can't discount the fact he was terrible for 2 months. His D has also been subpar most of the year. He's great on scoops, but his range is statuesque. Being an MVP is about being consistent. The games in April and May count as much as August and June. Reyes and Wright have been solid all year long, and have carried this team through the tough dry spells.
Delgado for MVP...He is having a decent turn around, but here is my Angst with him. Unless he was injured, and he wasnt,..why didnt he perform for both Willie Randolph., the Mets fans, and especially, the millions he cheated us out of by coasting along. Do we have to get him a "Friendly" manager to do his job.
Hey Brian, agree with that Wrights should be better or has sort of inflated numbers, but he has only 9 SF this year. You really think all were to Reyes and all 9 were RBI's? Think before you type.
Espo - don't pay homage to Fire Omar...you'll only encourage him.
David - Jimmy Rollins is huge hot-dog. He's in position to complain about the Mets celebrating. Rollins only wishes he could play for a NY team....

The team is playing great but when you have a good manager, players that can be good leaders and young talent proving themselves it's a great feeling BUT I still think Omar should be let go. I find it hard to trust the man behind the collapse and the worst trade in MLB history (Lee, Sizemore and Phillips for Bartolo Colon.) Come on. He's gotten lucky because he bought time by firing Willie. (I'm still a believer the Wilpon's said "Willie or you, it's your decision.") I think we have a good young ball club and I can't fathom a "lucky" GM having one more offseason to give old hacks big Mets dollars (i.e. Alou and that crummy one kneed 2nd baseman who's signed on four THREE MORE SEASONS.) He's done great with what we have but you still have to realize a bad apple is a bad apple no matter how much it wants to be an orange.

if you're going to bring up the colon trade, tell the whole story. the expos were going to be contracted and were owned by major league baseball. let's repeat that... they were going to be contracted meaning if omar kept them they very well likely would have been shipped off to some other team anyway because the expos will have ceased to exist. they were playing well and he sensed a chance to save the franchise by putting forth a winning season. it didn't work and the team moved anyway.
in retrospect, bad trade but you can't argue with the reasoning behind it.
Delgado for MVP ? A great turn around season but no way he should be rewarded for the last 1.5 years with an MVP award. And Wed night's homer may be looked back upon as the turning point of the season but if he would have produced in the first 3 months this team may be up more than 1 game. A superstar is a guy who bats .300, 25+ HR, 100+ RBI's. Now name the superstars over the past 3 years. I am so glad David Weight is a Met.
Typo WRIGHT
Castillo should not start 2night. And i think BELTRAN NEEDS TO WAKE UP!!! I would put him or Church in he 2 hole 2night. What do you think ??????????
Is Rollins serious? Does he see the stupid ass clown named Victorino on his team. Every time he scores a run, you think he just had a Joe Carter moment. Phillies suck Mets all the way 08. Even though Delgado has been nothing short of awesome, I still think Reyes is the MVP. He is having a ridiculus year.
Yeah, and willie randolph for manager of the year. Delgado's a zero who has finally earned his pay for 2 months.
