Gameday Live 73: Mets at Rockies

Good evening everyone! Adam Ronis here to take you through tonight's game as the Mets attempt to go over .500. The Mets are 2-1 since Jerry Manuel took over and they are back.....NOT! If you've seen Borat, you get that. I'm not ready to say the Mets are back just yet. I need to see a bigger sample. I do think the firing of Willie Randolph was the right move. It was done in a very poor manner. I've ended things with women in some harsh ways in the past, but I couldn't top the Mets in the way they handled Randolph's departure. But it is done and it's time to move on.

Pedro Martinez, coming off a win, takes the mound for the Mets. He is 2-0 with a 5.31 ERA and he is critical if the Mets are to make a run at the postseason. Ubaldo Jimenez, who was key in the Rockies run to the World Series last season, hasn't been good this year. He has pitched better lately, but walks have been his downfall. He is 1-7 with a 4.85 ERA. I'll be back when the game starts, so get your questions and intelligent discussions ready!

Top 9: Luis Vizcaino comes in for Jimenez. Wright walks to start it and Beltran singles. Delgado catches a break when Hawpe goes a long way, slides and can''t make the catch. Bases loaded. Nixon strikes out and Chavez pops up to second. Cancel fouls out to end the game. Another solid performance for the Mets offense, their biggest problem. Mets lose, 7-1.

Bottom 8: Aaron Heilman comes in to pitch. He Allows a two-out hit and that's it. Here comes the huge Mets rally.

Top 8: With one out Damian Easley gets the Mets second hit of the game and advances to third on an error by Matt Holliday. Reyes hits it too shallow for Easley to tag and Castillo pops up weakly to third. How bad is he? Rockies 7, Mets 1

Bottom 7: Taveras leads off with a single. Taveras steals his 35th base. Baker lines to center and Holliday lines to center. Schoenweis comes in for Vargas. Helton greets him with a single scoring Taveras. Atkins singles and Hawpe grounds out. Rockies 7, Mets 1

Top 7: Two quick outs. Is Willie back in the dugout? Nixon walks. The rally begins. Chavez gets out on the first pitch. Great approach guys. Rockies 6, Mets 1

Bottom 6:Atkins pops up and Hawpe flies out. Tulowitzki gets an infield hit. Iannetta gets hit and the dangerous Jimenez is at the plate. He grounds out to Vargas to end it. Rockies 6, Mets 1

Top 6: Reyes pops up. Castillo with another weak grounder. One of the worst signings ever. Four years for this guy? Wright flys to center. Way to make a starter struggling with his control work. The Mets offense going quiet once again. Rockies 6, Mets 1

Bottom 5: Atkins and Hawpe hit consecutive homers on the first two pitches of the inning. Tulowitzki follows with a double and BP is officially underway. Iannetta strikes out for the first out. Jimenez gets an infield hit, his second hit of the game. Only the Mets. Taveras singles for a 3-1 lead. Baker hits an RBI double and Holliday follows with a two-run single sending Pedro to the showers. Claudio Vargas is in and this game is now on the Mets offense. Don't get your hopes up. Vargas gets a 4-6-3 DP. Pedro went from great to a Triple-A pitcher. Sums up the Mets season to date. Six runs for the Rockies. Rockies 6, Mets 1

Top 5: Nixon walks to start off. Chavez almost beats out a bunt, and Iannetta makes a great play to get him. Schneider and Pedro ground out to end it. Mets 1, Rockies 0

Bottom 4: Baker strikes out swinging to start. Then he strikes out Holliday, who couldn't catch up with the fastball. Helton pops up to Castillo. Excellent inning for Pedro. Mets 1, Rockies 0

Top 4: Finally, a Met being patient and who else but Luis Castillo, who I think is scared to hit since he can't hit it past 200 feet. Could he homer on a Little League field? He walks to lead off. Wright walks too. The Mets need to continue this patience. Beltran hits into a fielder's choice and runners are at first and third. A 4-6-3 double play from Delgado ends the inning. I call that every time he comes up in those situations. I thought the Mets liked Pedro? They never score for him. Mets 1, Rockies 0

Bottom 3: Pedro strikes Iannetta out to start the third. Jimenez has no hits in his last 39 at-bats and then he singles. Everything comes to an end except the Mets pitching a no-hitter. Excellent throw by Chavez on a catch in shallow right and he doubles off Jimenez at first. That's what happens when you're never on base. Pedro looking very good. Mets 1, Rockies 0

Top 3: Schneider strikes out as Jimenez has now retired seven straight. Pedro grounds out for the second out. Reyes grounds out to short as nine straight Mets are set down. Here we go again. Can someone tell the Mets this guy walked five his last outing and has issued 44 walks this season? Mets 1, Rockies 0

Bottom 2: Garrett Atkins flied out to right to start the inning and Brad Hawpe flies to left. Excellent job by Pedro so far. Tulowitzki grounds out to short for a 1-2-3 inning. Can Pedro maybe go seven? Mets 1, Rockies 0

Top 2:Carlos Delgado grounds out to shortstop. Try third next time where no one plays you. At least he is heading in the right direction. Nixon fouls out and Chavez strikes out as the Mets go quietly. Mets 1, Rockies 0

Bottom 1: Pedro Martinez had allowed at least one run in the first inning of seven straight starts. Willy Taveras lined out to Delgado to start it. Then the hot-hitting Jeff Baker singled and he got Matt Holliday looking. Good to see life on the fastball. Helton has a good at-bat and draws his 54th walk. At least he's still good at something. Martinez then picks Baker off second base to end the inning. Now, if he can do that all the time, he'll never give up a run in the first inning. Considering his last few outings, this is a good start for Pedro. Mets 1, Rockies 0

Top 1: Jose Reyes leads off with a triple and scores on a sac fly by Luis Castillo. Reyes didn't slide on a close play. David Wright needs to tell him to slide and he was standing on the on-deck circle. Can we get one clean full game of fundamental baseball on this team? Mets 1, Rockies 0
