And tonight, the Yoda mask
Well, now we know what the Mets needed to straighten themselves out. Not a new manager or GM, but yes, the bright orange jacket. My colleague Anthony Rieber provides all the details of the rally jacket, which PR guru Jay Horwitz donned for last night's loooong overdue 5-3 victory over the Marlins.
Hey, whatever it takes. I'm not sure where Pedro has been keeping the Yoda mask, which he likes to put on from time to time when the Mets are desperate for runs. It must be buried in his locker because I doubt he travels with it. Unless he just likes to wear it for fun in airports.
On a more serious note, it looks like Ryan Church's concussion was not so mild after all. I know there's some dispute over the seriousness of his injury, but it was strange how it all went down last Wednesday in Atlanta. The initial CT scan showed no serious problems and Church insisted that doctors told him he had not suffered a concussion -- even though the Mets said that he had. Regardless, it's obvious now that he should have been put on the DL immediately.
And here's a bucket of cold water to the face of Mets fans: Ken Davidoff points out this morning that Randolph could be the lucky one if he's eventually fired because the Mets, as presently constructed, may be on the precipice of some hard times. It's difficult to believe that this team was on the brink of the World Series only two years ago and 17 games away from a second straight NL East title last season. Weird.

There was an article in the Times today about how Church has been jeopardizing his health by even pinch hitting. Much to his credit, with all the injuries he was probably trying to work through it. Hernandez mentioned on the Friday night broadcast that the plane ride and high altitude may have made things worse.
If the Mets simply replace Delgado with Texieria and bring up Martinez to replace Alou, their offense will be vastly improved and it would even save on payroll as even if they pay him $20 mill, its still less than the combined $24 million they are paying Delgado and Alou.
In an article about the future of the Mets, you'd figure Davidoff would at least mention the 2 first round picks and high sandwich pick the Mets have in this upcoming draft. I know the draft is a crapshoot, but these picks will play a huge role in shaping the Mets.
Getting Texeira is impossible....The Yankees are going to open the vault for the guy, as will ATL. Why would he want to come to Shea after hearing the constant booing and bad press the MEts get ????? Not to mention the fractured lockeroom and historic collapses !!
Jon....Draft picks mean nothing when you have the clueless Omar at the helm. He has ruined our Farm System, mortgaged our future, and embarassed our team.
FIRE OMAR TODAY !!!
Jon, I agree - the draft picks would've been worth mentioning. Of course, the Mets have drafted quite poorly under Omar - but still, your point is well-taken.
If the Orioles continue to improve, here's how I handicap the Teixeira sweepstakes this winter:
1. Yankees ($$$$$, grew up Mattingly fan, sister lives in Hoboken, loves AL)
2. Orioles ($$$$$, schoolboy legend in Baltimore, family lives there, loves AL)
3. Mets ($$$$$, sister lives in Hoboken)
Think we need to all step back from the ledge folks. They've looked bad, but its a long, long year. Its more interesting for all of us to write/talk about the team as though it is in alarming tail spin rather then just scuffling along in the first third of the season. But no one thought they'd finish with 120 wins right? We probably all fell within 85 to 90 win projections in a tight NLE race. Even at the high end, they'd have to play .589 ball give or take the rest of the way. Easy? No, of course not. Impossible? Just as obviously not.
Think they can go 16-12 for each month here on out? Thats 88 wins and with a hot streak here or there thrown in playing 'meaningful games in October'.
Lets get out of May, and see how they do. "Disturbing" is a fine and accurate word for some of the the trends (Delgado, Heilman in particular), and if they don't make the playoffs I will want sweeping change as much any anyone. But its a long season and we've only just downed the appetizer.
FWIW: Johan has done just fine so far. Saw a reporter who spells his first name strangely point out that JS is probably not worth the money in his deal based on his performance thus far. Am I the only one who noticed JS was a slow starter in Minny? His career ERA up until June is over 4.00. Last year was his first he shook the rust by May. And frankly he's always had one or two shaky months a year. Watch for the explosion out of the turn my fellow Metsies.... its coming.
Thanks Ken, Always looking for a silver lining with this team!
As much as I love to blame Omar for some bad moves, I don't know if you can blame him for the draft picks. Until this year, the Mets have clung to MLB's draft slotting terms while other big market teams (that's you Yankess, Tigers, Dodgers and Red Sox) have ignored the draft slots and used late picks to take guys who were slotted higher but passed over by small market teams afraid of paying big bucks for prospects or being held hostage by agents like Boras. The Mets stuck to the slots because their owner, Fred Wilpon, is a Bud Selig loyalist, despite the fact that Bud has done everything possible to support small market clubs like his Brewers at the expense of the big market clubs (draft picks for free agents, slotting, moving the Brewers to the NL Central, luxury tax, money from big market teams for small market teams to spend on players that the owners don't use and pocket). Now that the Mets have abandoned the slots, they should be able to make better picks later in the draft, assuming they are willing to spend the money for the picks and also hire some great scouts like Stick Michael.
