Mets piling on, 2-0

Break up the B-team. Michel Abreu smacked a one-out single and Anderson Machado followed with a triple to rightfield that had Abreu looking for an oxygen tank after crossing the plate.

Speaking of Abreu, we were just discussing him as a possible backup plan at first base because the Mets really don't have one if something happens to Carlos Delgado. Could be an issue.

I've been waiting for Abreu for 3-4 years now, ever since he was signed out of Cuba as the big slugger. He's got pretty much exactly what the Mets need off the bench right now. Power righty bat that can play 1B and corner OF. I believe he missed all of last season, but in 2006 in AA ball he hit .330 17 HR 71 RBI 62 R in only 397 at bats... that's pretty impressive in a very good level of ball. Extend that out to a full season of 550 at bats and he avgs out to .330 24 HR 98 RBI and 86 R.... I'll take that!

I have to believe that any one of Damion Easley, Jose Valentin or Ruben Gotay could play 1B if needed. With all of that depth at 2B, those guys are going to have to show they can play other positions.
