Tick ... tick ... tick

tick.jpgSo the Mets are on the clock to get a contract extension for Johan Santana done by 5 p.m. Friday. Not to worry. Why would COO Jeff Wilpon and GM Omar Minaya even make this deal if they didn't plan to dig deep -- very deep -- for the money to lock him up? And the days of the Mets being cheap (Vladimir Guerrero, for instance) are long over. The Mets' solid relationship with Santana's agent, Peter Greenberg, should also help, even though many felt that Greenberg left money on the table two years ago by agreeing to that four-year, $23.25-million deal for Reyes. The Mets aren't going to get much of a discount this time, you can bet.

heard anything? We know they are talking, any idea of progress, special provisions - no-trade, merchandise tent, perhaps? :)

Great reference to the merchandise tent, wallybackman. Could it be that you still have nightmares of those comical early negotiations with A-Rod from back in 2002? No word yet on the Santana talks though.

I'm guessing if the mets are floating anything funky like deferred dollars or creative bonus structures, it's going to take a bit of time. you've gotta get the union to sign off on it, plus the commish's office, plus I'm sure santana's agents have to crunch numbers about how much X deferred dollars will be worth years down the road.

By the way, how hilarious would it be if the Mets ever actually ended up giving somebody their merchandising tent? I kind of picture everyone trying to leave the ballpark after a game ending up in it whether they like it or not, the way rides at disneyworld dump you into the gift shop before you can exit. Plus there will be juggling clowns on unicycles.

There are less than 24 hours left until the deadline for the Mets to sign Santana and to be honest, I am growing very restless. If they screw this up and don't get a deal done, they will be the laughing stock of baseball. I don't understand what the problem is. When you have the best pitcher in the game practically begging to play for you, you give him what he wants. If he wants 7 years, give it to him...if he wants $160 million, give it to him. Forget the September collapse, if they don't sign him, it will be a much bigger disappointment than what happened last year. The Mets need to really think about the consequences if they fail to get something done. Mets fans are very loyal, forgiving and understanding but I don't think any fan will understand or forgive them if they blow this opportunity...I know I won't.....

I am very happy that the Amazin's got the deal done. I have been a Mets fan since I was 4 years old. I have never been so happy . They still need a good middle relief picther and one more good bat. I say I am happy to be a season ticket holder . GO METS !!!!!
