Mets acquire Santana

BY NEWSDAY.COM

The Mets have acquired lefthanded ace Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins for prospects Carlos Gomez, Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey, Newsday has confirmed.

The deal, first reported on USA Today.com, depends on the Mets and Santana reaching an agreement on a six- or seven-year contract extension within the next three days.

Santana presumably would waive his no-trade clause to allow the deal to go through once an agreement on a new contract had been reached.

Although the Mets sacrificed four key members of their farm system in the deal, they also managed to make the trade without giving up prized prospect Fernando Martinez.

Rather than Martinez, who had been widely reported to be the key cog in any deal for Santana, the Mets included Gomez, 22, who played 58 games as a rookie with the Mets last year and batted .232.

Humber, 25, was a first-round pick of the Mets in 2004, but his stock plunged after he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2005. He was on the Mets' roster during the second half of last season, appearing in five games.

Best Met acquisition since Gary Carter became a Met in the winter of 85-86!

Way to step up OMAR !!!!

We got our Ace....October here we come !!!!

Now add some depth to the staff and bullpen

Lets Go, Mets Go !!!

Who let the Dogs Out !!!

Mets...World Series Champs...2008...Nuff Said !!!

Nice deal, this works. So it takes a blockbuster deal, biggest trade in the game in over a year, to get Mets Blog updated. Well at least now we know. Now we have to go slot busting and pay for talent in the draft. With three first rounders we can restock the farm fast if the robber baron Wilpons allow.

FINALLY!!!!! To all you Mets haters and fans alike who said this would never happen.........now what do you have to say?

I've been asking for this trade since last July. I think I got the NYC writers going on this story. LOL. I was constantly writing on the web pages and blogs that this trade needed to happen before the 2008 season. I'm glad this finally happened.

This trade has changed the Destiny of the Mets. No longer will they play second fiddle to the Yankees. They've now sent a messege top the rest of MLB that the Mets are not screwing around anymore, and that they are the team to beat.

Welcome back Omar. All is forgiven.

Wow, and to think that I was losing faith in Omar. This one move takes the offseason from average (if not unimpressive) to amazin'!

Anybody know when Santana jersey's go on sale??

I haven't seen any posts from Anonymous since the Santana acqusition. Anonymous, if you're out there, you said in a previous post that without an ace, the Mets are a 3rd place team. Now that we got our ace I'm curious to hear your new prediction.
Say what you want about Omar. I was actually starting to lose faith in him too, especially when I heard they were going to settle on Kyle Losche, but I have to give the guy credit, he hung in there and once the Yanks and Sox backed off and the time was right, he told Bill Smith, "Here's our final offer...take it or leave it." His strategy was brilliant. Smith was in a bad situation and had no choice but to make this deal and Omar pounced on him. Smith turned down 2 other much better offers back at the winter meetings thinking he would get more as spring training got closer but that better offer never came. And to add insult to injury, Smith didn't get any of the 3 original players he wanted...Reyes, Pelfrey and Martinez. This could turn out to be the best trade in Mets history if Santana pitches like he is expected to. I liked Gomez and I think he has the potential to be a future all star but to give up basically 4 "nobody's" for arguably the best pitcher in all of baseball, you have to be ecstatic. I know I am. We needed an ace and we got him. We can look forward to opening Citi Field with Johan on the mound, Wright at 3rd, Reyes at short, Beltran in center and maybe, just maybe Pelfrey will become the power pitcher we were promised he would be. This trade not only improves the team but it allows the other 4 pitchers to fill their correct roles. Pedro was expected to be the ace. He's not an ace anymore. I'm not even sure he's a #2 but this will certainly take a lot of pressure off him. And the same goes for Maine and Perez. They were each expected to give the Mets 200 innings this year. Now they can afford to have a handful of poor starts. And all Duque has to do is keep the ship afloat until it's Johan's turn in the rotation. This could wind up being the most dominant starting 5 in the NL but we'll see what happens. This team will score runs, play solid defense and now they have excellent depth in the rotation. I don't wanna jump to conclusions here...we'll see where the rotation is at in September but just for fun...

Santana - 18 to 20 wins
Pedro - 12 to 15 wins (if he makes 25 - 30 starts)
Maine - 15 to 18 wins
Perez - 15 to 18 wins
El Duque - 10 to 12 wins (if he makes 25 - 30 starts)

This should be a fun season.

this is great we have the best rotation in the NL.
but whats better is seeing utly and howard crying when they strike out on his changeup.
