Surprise! Ramon Castro signs with Mets

vadar.jpgJust kidding. Not sure if this even qualifies as news by this point, but the Mets finally announced today that Ramon Castro has re-upped for a two-year deal worth $4.6 million.

Ramon ... Yorvit. Yorvit ... Ramon.

Nice knowing you, Paulie.

Check below for the usual stat roundup:

The New York Mets announced today that they have re-signed catcher Ramon Castro to a two-year, $4.6 million contract.

Castro, 31, slugged a career-high 11 home runs last season. He also hit .285 (41-144) with 24 runs scored, six doubles and had 31 RBI in 52 games in 2007.

“We are glad to have re-signed Ramon back,” said Mets General Manager Omar Minaya. “He has developed into the kind of hitter who you want to come up in clutch situations. In addition to what he brings on the field, Ramon is a tremendous presence in the clubhouse.”

Ramon batted .293 (17-58) at Shea and batted .390 (16-41) during night games last year.

The 6-3, 256-pounder was placed on the 15-Day Disabled List on August 18th, retroactive to August 13th, with lower back arthritis. He was activated on September 15th.

Castro hit .236 (30-126) with four home runs in 40 games in 2006.

During his career, he’s hit .234 (221-945) with 103 runs, 46 doubles, 41 home runs and 137 RBI in 398 major league games with the Florida Marlins and Mets.

Seems like alot of money for a backup, though.

What UFA's of the Mets are Type A's where we would get compensation if they sign elsewhere? Is Glavine?

PLEASE!!

Don't sign GLAVINE!

Too OLD! and he STINKS!!

Go back to ATL Tommy boy!!

Gotta love it!!

"one of the best back up catchers in the game"

I guess that's why they pulled off the best choke in HISTORY!!

he's a damn backup!! the best BACKUP!!

COME ON!!

Omar don't even think of signing Glavin again he is over the hill as far as pitchers go ,he might win a few games here and there but he can't beat the good teams with a 85 mile an hour fast ball. I threw that fast at 25 but once you reached your peak years you'll never get it over that . We need one or two more young pitchers to fill the staff but you better tell Peterson that they have to learn to throw a curve ball more then a fast ball and get it over. You see only 2 pitchers on the staff that throw the curve more then a fast ball and they are strike out leaders on the team . You have to get Sanchez and Padillia back in shape because they would be awesome with Wagner and Hielman . The next void will be a solid right fielder or first baseman ,Why not try Castro out as a back up for DelGardo if he stays with the team this year.Castro has the size and he can hit ,he would have to get a little defensive instructions from Keith Hernandez but it would be a chance for him to play more. .Better get started early because the teams that are behind us are making their moves now and not later??

Hey its a 2 yr contract for a back up. 2.3 million a yr for a guy who is valuable off the bench. It may seem like a lot but in this day and age its a good deal not to mention they only spent 4.8 million a yr for 3 yrs of Torrealba so 7.1 million a yr for 2 catchers. Not too bad in this day and age. It says so long to LoDuca and that is sad. He was the emotional leader but it was time for a change. We as Mets fans should wish him well.

I want proper compensation for Tom Glavine. I do not care whether or not he is buddy-buddy with Jeff Wilpon. The Braves are our biggest rival in the East and we should take their draft picks without blinking. We're going to need those picks after we trade some of our better prospects for a front line starting pitcher.
I'm getting sick and tired of the Wilpons....they just don't have any killer instinct. Make something happen...show some personal pride please or sell the franchise!

PLEASE tell me they're not serious about Eckstein.

PLEASE!

When is shaved ice night at Shea this year? I was just wondering if i can sacrifice a chicken too..please respond

When did this happen? This year i thought when the Mets blew a 7 game lead with 17 to play. Let's face it Met fans we had the biggest choke in the history of baseball. We can't argue anymore

What's the real deal on why they aren't looking at LoDuca? He'd be better than Kendal. I don't get this.

I kinda like Jason Kendall. He's got the same kind of bat Lo Duca has.

And, really, are Mets fans this racist to be constantly worrying about the Hispanic nature of the team? Look at the entire league. It has a lot of hispanics--A ROD for one--in it.

I guess it's a NYC thing. You guys are just plain racist in your thinking: looking for a white team to love. I'm very glad I don't live there any more.

As far as the talent on the team is concerned, I look at Delgado as needing to rebound. And they need a potent corner OF bat. The Mets need more potent youth period. They were too old and their age caught up with them.

Alright, lets see the past week events for the Mets have been we signed two catchers, oh wait only one signed the other we realized that his shoulder is so bad that he would make Mickey Hatcher look even better throwing a baseball to secondbase. At Least we signed Castillo, which was a good move in my opinion, for one he stabilizes Reyes, as will show hustle every time. As for catcher, even if Lo Duca thinks he is more then what he is worth, why Minaya won`t offer him a incentive based salery for two years that includes a team option for a third year. If Lo Duca turns it down then we can say at least we tried. Lo Duca has said he wants to stay well then this will tell us if he really ment it. As for a frontline Pitcher, i am uneasy dealing away our future. Phillips did all he could to ruin the Mets future by trading away good young players for has beens. Personally I know we will still be a good team next year, I rather keep what we have and continue to build up the farm system. As for Glavin, I am glade he left although most of the season he was good, you wonder what he has left? He may be a good influence to young pitchers but I think his decline is has begun. Luckily for the Braves they have him for only a year. Lets take our bumps this comming season and work on a very strong championship future.

Update..... Mets have a catcher and all it cost us was Mota.. Mets have traded for Estrada while Mota goes to the Brewers. Well this will give us another full year to figure out who will be our starting catcher in 2009... Not sure if this is a good trade or not since Estrada had a good start to his career in Atlanta, he has not done much since then.

Wow..I would have bet the farm that the Mets would have been lucky to get a bag of used baseballs for Mota. Estrada must be damaged goods. Sure hope he recovers from both a knee and elbow surgery he had this fall.

Looks like a platoon situation at catcher. Hope Castro is up to the task,,he could be the everyday catcher before we know it.

Christmas arrives early!!!! Mets unload Mota for more than some pine tar, batting donuts, and a some mustard packets! Kudos to Omar for this steal. Addition by subtraction works, just look at the Islanders after unloading Yashin.

Nice trade for Estrada he has to be the worst catcher I have seen in watching Brewers baseball for 38 years. He is terrible behind the plate. He is lazy, overweight, doesn't block the ball well and that is just on the defensive side. When he came to Milwaukee the rumors were that he was a mal content those rumors came to be true. Mets fans think they are happy to get rid of Mota. Brewer fans were extremely happy to see Johnny fat boy leave. His selfish hitting at the plate makes his average very deceiving. Just wait until he does get on base. He clogs up the bases and it takes three hits to get him in. They use his injuries as an excuse but his hamstring didn't bother him the first part of the year and he still showed lack of hustle on the bases and behind the plate. Becareful what you wish for as this looks like another Minaya mistake. His trades last year were atrocious and this looks like another one. Even if Mota doesn't throw one pitch for the Brewers this was a good trade for Milwaukee. Castro is a far better reciever than Estrada will ever be and for your sake he will be your number one catcher otherwise you will be watching your Pitching staff go right down the tubes. Good luck Mets fans in having just picked up the worst defensive catcher in Baseball!

Only Met fans can be this dumb. Rich Carlson is right on the money; Estrada is worthless they should of taken the bag of baseballs. The Mets are back to square one,Omar has taken them down a path where it will take years to recover. A total fraud.

With the uncertainty of Carlos Delgado the Mets should also look to sure up the offense and go after Andrew Jones. I no he plays center field but perhaps we can bring him in to play right field. This is one that we shouldn't pass up because he will solidify our offense now and for the next five to six years. We should get him now, while the getting is good. He had an average year and still put up good numbers. You have to expect that he will have a better season next year but even if his numbers are about same next year, they were still better then Milledge and Green together. What’s your take on this? Let’s make some noise if you agree and before it’s too late.
