Just got back from Shea and I have to say I'm a little surprised that GM Omar Minaya refused to give Willie Randolph what I would consider an iron-clad vote of confidence. Minaya was asked no less than four times about Randolph's job security and the GM waffled his way through the answers by deferring to his upcoming meetings with ownership.
Asked specifically if Randolph would be the Mets' manager for Opening Day 2008, Minaya said, "Willie has two years left on his contract. I think if you look back at what he's done here for the past three years, it speaks for itself. I think Willie works hard and my relationship with Willie is good. But I do believe, because of the way we lost, I think it's fair to at least sit down with ownership."
All Minaya had to do was say that Randolph is his manager for 2008 and that would be the end of the discussion. He didn't. In my mind, that leaves the door open a crack.
Do I think Randolph will be fired? No. He still has two years left on his contract and the Mets aren't about to pull the plug only eight months after giving him an extension. Randolph will be on notice, however. A slow start next season, with the Mets showing the same signs that doomed them this year, and Randolph could get the hook sooner rather than later.

WOW!!!
I can't believe I am reading this but, then again this is NY..UNREAL!
Maybe the Wilpons should be calling the meeting and looking at hombre Omar!
Willie stays! He deserves it! Give the guy the god damn tools Omar! or Wilpons!
I have been talking to many Mets fans in the past few days and they all sound remarkably like many Yankee fans did at the end of last season. "Fire the Manager!" could you emagine how many of those same people would be employed at their jobs everytime a co-worked couldn't get the job done? Truth is the players have the responsiblity once they hit the field to hustle and play with the heads up at all times. This was not the case for the mets coming down the stretch. Lack of effort and hustle, if you're gonna blame Willie for anything it should be for not benching all of them in place of some rookies. Better luck next year boys...I'm on my way to Cleavland! Peace, Outa here
Frankly, let Willie feel uncomfortable. I don't want to be a knee-jerk Yankee fan, who starts yelling FIRE TORRE at the first opportunity, but I want Willie to feel some discomfort right now.
As for Omar, two words:
Chad Bradford.
That is all.
I say give the manager the coaches and players he wants. How ironic is it that Willie fled the Yanks to get away from this type of thing.
For the long term future what I am about to suggest will not happen. A complete rebuilding project is needed. The was not a "slump at the worst possible time" but a choke pure and simple. Any time any type of challenge happened going back to the 2006 NLCS the team folded. Tweaks won't work. These guys as a group are a failure. Delgado,Green,Beltran,Glavine Duque etc and must leave or be traded for young pitching. I know Beltran was great at the end but that is why he must be traded now that his value is high. Many fans understandably want Reyes who was a major reason for the collapse traded. He is young and sports have seen many instances young talented players have major painful setback years before becoming stars. Of course it can go the other way also but we have to keep him a pray. The one person who is most often mentioned as leaving LaDuca should stay. Why get rid of of one of the few actual gamers on this team its crazy.
In the wake of the bullpen collapse we have to get rid of the 2000's methods of pitcher use witch caused it and go back 30 years. Starters have to be taught to go 7,8 or 9 innings. Willie was trying to do this his first year and it stopped for some reason. Closers should come in during the 8th or 9th inning with the bases loaded.
One last thought on the Reyes mystery. Nobody really knows but theories have abounded it was Ricky Henderson or personal problems. What about steroids?. The man is way bulked up and his personality has changed.
I'm sick of hearing people defend willie by saying he took a bad team and brought them to the NLCS in two years.... He was given much better talent in those two years. His ultra conservative style doesn't work in the NL.
Randolph has to go. Utter failure of leadership that allowed this cesspool of laziness and disrespect for the game to continue - unfettered. This team played like it's leader; denial of urgency and seriousness of purpose. Cluelessness. The atmosphere at Shea must change and it starts with the captain of the ship who is clueless and is not the right person for the job.
I follow the Mets closely every year and going into the start of the season the biggest concerns I had for the 2007 Mets was their pitching . The first half of the season their pitching was respectable and combined with a potent offense it appeared that this team was a lock for the post season . I like Omar Minaya and what he has done so far with what the market has had to offer , but it seemed obvious to me that even though their pitching did well enough to make them frontrunners to get into the playoffs that without any additions to their staff , specifically a quality setup man they would not have been a World Series contender at any rate . I am aware that Omar may have been reluctant to part with top prospects at this time for any available arms for various reasons . He may have had his eyes on some possible offseason moves where he would need the trade bate , but by not aquiring atleast one prooven setup man to bolster the staff he gambled with this season and lost . I have no problem with that because its not my job , but his and I trust his decision making . So basically what I am saying is that the season is over now and the GM has to retool the pitching staff and make a few other adjustments to the roster and we will get em next year . Thats right , I said ," we will get em next year " .
Omar and Willie have to go!! Don't insult Torre by making any comparison between Torre and Willie. Mr. Randolph(personally - by his inactions) lost too many games. Omar is a con man -smooth and ignorant. He chooses "losers" and dumps "winners". DOWN WITH BOTH OMAR AND WILLIE!!!! If these guys stay we will be assured of another 2007. Willie is no "manager" and Omar is no "rebuilder". Please Mr. Wilpon, wake up and smell the coffee!!! Fans deserve more,
