Oops ... They did it again.

britney.jpegIn keeping with my disaster theme -- nuclear Armageddon, car barreling off cliff -- I Googled "train wreck" for today's photo and this is what came up. Britney Spears at the MTV awards. No joke. Amid countless photos of trains crashing into each other or piled up on tracks, there was a smiling Britney, busting out of her questionable wardrobe choice.

That made me think. Are the Mets like Britney, realizing too late that she has serious problems only to go down in flames in front of a national TV audience? Despite all the negativity, and how tempting it is to just keep shoveling on the dirt, I say no. As upsetting as last night's 9-8 loss to the Nationals was, and it was stomach-turning, the Mets did appear to fix some leaks.

They played error-free for the first time in six games. They had 16 hits. Once again, they jumped ahead 4-0, then led, 5-1 and 7-3. At least the Mets showed a pulse. I know this is no time for moral victories -- the Mets desperately need real ones -- but it was a drastic improvement from the previous two games. As Paul Lo Duca said, "We played p--- poor in those games. We couldn't have beaten a high school team."

In the aftermath of last night's loss, the Mets ate together quietly. The only sounds that could be heard was the occasional whine of a blender and forks scraping plates. There was almost zero talking. And just about everyone dressed in time to make the first bus back to the hotel. The room was virtually empty only 40 minutes after the last out.

I'm going to think positive here and suggest the Mets just wanted to get this loss out of their system as quickly as possible. They had their pregame meeting, the result was not what they wanted, but this is no time to waste energy looking backward. Get some sleep, get back to RFK and salvage the finale of this series

"It's not going to be easy," Lo Duca said. "Hopefully this makes us stronger. We played hard, we battled, and if we play like this, we're going to win eight of 10 games. It just didn't happen."

Hope Paulie knows what he's talking about.
If they fall behind the Phils, they'll probably be kissing the WC goodbye too.

Everyone in a Mets Jersey...

Put you god damn pom-poms down and do the talking where it counts!

ON THE FIELD!!!

This is getting to be ridiculous. There is no reason why we shouldn't be beating the Nats, Fish, Cards, and Fish again. C'mon.

I know it feels like it's easy to bash Willie because of this but remember, he's not the one on the field playing. This Mets team over the last 5 games reminds me of the early season Yankees. They are not playing with heart, desire, motivation. They are playing like a child scared to be in the sandbox because the bully is coming over to them to take their toys away.

Listen Mets, it's time to be the bullies again. Watch some video of the 1986 Mets...the ones who didn't take any crap from anyone. The ones who went out every game knowing they were going to kick the crap out of you. It wasn't a question of "if" we were going to win, it was a question of "how much" are we going to win by tonight.

I hope one Met reads this post and feeds off of it. Someone needs to step up and just say, "OK enough BS, let's beat the s**t out of those guys!!".

Would have liked to see a squeeze with Gotay and Gomez on third. Lets try something once in a while...

A squeeze with 2 outs? Not exactly a great play. They had a force at second and a play at first. You can't really squeeze with 2 outs.

Historic collapse ?? Are we talking about when the Red Sox coming back from a 3-0 deficit against the Yankees ?

If not, then "historic collapse" should not be mentioned.

I'll admit I had to run back to the TV when the 9th Inning excitement started (was pissed and in the office). Was it smart holding Gomez at third or should Alomar had let him try and see what happened at the plate?

Hey, I just invented this drinking game to help deal with this possibly historic collapse:

Struggling Mets Drinkin' Game
Rules:

Drink once for:
for every runner stranded
for every double play grounded into
for every strikeout
for every error
for every pitching change

Drink twice for:
Every Reyes popup
Any mention of the name Lawrence, Mota, Sele, or Schoeneweiss

Do a shot:
When Keith and Ron start talking about the old days
If you get the Aflac trivia question wrong

Chug a beer when:
David Newhan gets an at bat.
Schoenweisse gives up a homer
The camera finds Willie looking on emotionless (this one's gonna be a doozy)

Shawn Green played on Rosh Hashanah, and the Mets have lost every game since. Shawn, please for the sake of your team and out of respect for your religion, refuse to play on Yom Kippur, this Friday night & Saturday!

Dave,

Add a shot for every time: Hernandez has to be corrected in the booth.
Mentions food.

Also one shot if he talks about tootsie pops.

Unfortunately 8 & 2 might not get it done. lol

I remember the Yanks-Red Sox race of '78. It was said at the time that the Red Sox were in 1st place chasing the Yanks. It has felt exactly like that all year with the Mets. Of course the last statement in its way is an insult to those 1978 teams. Speaking of the Yanks why do I get this nightmare vision once an hour of thier upcoming tickerrtape parade. Might have something to due with thier young hungry players. Unlike our own Jose who I wrote worrying about in June. I thought he was cured with that benching but there has been more not running on close foul balls and no more benchings. Might it be that Jose is now Ricky's project not Willie's anymore?(credit the FAN for that thought)

Maybe it wasn't a cooincidence but a friend of mine (who happens to be a Yankee fan) sang the song 'Trainwreck' by Lucinda Williams last night in the bar...even before they lost. Willie has doomed the team by talking about drinking champagne...that's as bad as talking about a nohitter before it's complete. What was he thinking? I'm starting to believe in voodoo and hexes and jinxes. What has been happening over the past couple of days just isn't possible.

If a black cat shows up at RFK tonight and circles Wright in the on-deck circle before running under the stands, I'm going to throw my shoe at the TV!

Let's not get superstitious. That would make us pathetic...like Cubs fans.
