Zog's Blog: Sunday Special

Herzog here, pinch-hitting for Lennon ...

An odd lineup for the Mets today, as a couple of players needed the day off. Carlos Delgado asked for a break and Willie Randolph gladly complied. “His numbers against [Oakland starter Joe] Kennedy are atrocious,” the Mets’ manager noted. Delgado is 5-for-36 lifetime against the A’s lefthander, a .139 average. Additionally, Julio Franco, who would have started at first base yesterday, said his knee was acting up and could not start. So Shawn Green made his 119th career start at first base and Damion Easley made his sixth career start in rightfield.

The lineup:

Reyes SS
LoDuca C
Beltran CF
Wright 3B
Easley RF
Green 1B
Valentin 2B
Gomez LF
Maine P

Why all the hype to get LaDuca voted on the All-Stars....He doesn't belong. In fact.neither does Beltran.Wright deserves to be on the team but Cabrera should start. Reyes is the only legit starter.

I agree with Chin....in fact, that is the way I voted. Hey....maybe they should go with this lineup.....it works. Easly, that big power rightfielder had the first big hit.

How sweep it is!
But a factoid of significance---Jose Reyes has 9 intentional walks! Think about that. Walking.
On purpose.
Jose Reyes?
If that is not an indictment of the Met offense than I do not know what is. I would like to see a permanent #2 hitter. If that means importing a bat than alright. It seams that Willie spins a wheel with names on it and where the wheel stops, thats who bats second. If the mets work on the #2 hole and the #5 hole we will be in business.

TS,
It's not that illogical.
Walk Reyes and the guy ahead of him stays at second. That keeps Jose from stealing too.
If he hits the ball on the ground, the runner on 2B has a chance to score if the fielder makes a hurried throw to first.

It's not a case of needing a classic #2 hitter. The real issue here is that ... unless you've got ARod or Ichiro in that hole there are darn few players in the bigs who can beat you in more ways than Reyes with a runner already on 2B.

so Delgado needed a break from all that NOT running after getting a hit?

God I love the traditional uniforms, any other version, alternate styles makes me cringe. Lets keep the real Met uniforms please!

delaware, I agree with you. I just wonder...other that Jeter or Ricky Henderson, has there ever been a leadoff hitter with that many intentional walks?
What is this "Darrell Porter" revisited?
I think that if there was more stability at 2 you would force the team to pitch to Reyes.
How about:
1. Gomez
2. Reyes
3. Beltran
4. Wright
5. Lance Berkman

I like Lance Berkman, that sounds like something Omar can do. He can also play first base.

Rod Beck passes away. A real baseball throwback. There was a story about him in 2003 making a comeback attempt in the minor leagues and while doing so he lived in a mobile home just outside the outfield fences. Fans would come by at all hours and knock on his door and have a beer with him.
I wonder if this might relate to an Alex Rodriguez type having a merchandise "tent" set up outside the gates at Shea Stadium. Exactly, it doesn't....that is the difference between baseball's past and future.

I thought the ugliest dog in the world was Moises Alou?
I am confused?
I thought Mo had that 'Dogging it" down pat, he seemed like a sure fire winner to me.

THANKS FOR THE ALEC BALDWIN UPDATES.
NOW MY DAY IS TRULY COMPLETE...

Sweep the cards, nuff said.
This crap about being mediocre at home has got to end, and it ends now.
I assume that Duca is appealing his suspension, that is why he is in the starting lineup?
If he loses the appeal, lets get Sir Mick Jagger to catch. He'll sing "I can't get no satisfaction" during the 7th inning stretch.

I think Scott Muni is posting in here.
Scottso, go away now !
Eric Burton is posting on the Yankee side. Try them if you like?

Dear Omar, I am your biggest fan. I have followed your career in admiration and respect. I think that not only have your achievements to date been impressive and in fact monumental but also historic for a Latino in Major League Baseball. Also your success to date projects towards the future as we fans in New York have set our faith in you to re-establish our city as the definitive experience for National League baseball, as it was back in the day with the Giants and the Dodgers sharing the landscape.
Having said that....Mike Maroth, a journeyman lefthander held the Mets to two hits tonight Papi.
Just wanted you to know.

Maroth held the Mets hitless because they were tired from all the hits they had against the A's the day before....except Delgado, of course, which is why he had one of the 3 hits.

Mirror Mirror?
What do you see?
Is that David Weathers?
Back in the Met family tree?
Is there a Jose Contreras
taking a red-eye,
on a flight from Chicago,
with his old pal Jermaine Dye?
Oh Mirror Mirror?
What can it be?

UPDATE THE BLOG FELLAS.
THREAD AWAY....

The way Schoeneweis is pitching, he can only be brought into games when the Mets have a big lead. Every appearance he is pretty much guarenteed to give up at least one run and in a pennant race, they can't afford that.

I don't know about anyone else, but once I saw that worthless piece of garbage come into the game in the 11th last night, I turned off the TV and went to bed. I figured better to not know what happened than to go to bed pissed off at him.

Turns out to have been a good choice. This guy is making a habit of sucking every time out there.

This looks great! It would be fun to have it before my neighbor buys it and shows off to me.
