Green on DL, Gomez in lineup

redcross.jpgThe Mets really surprised no one with today's announcement that Shawn Green had been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured bone in his foot.

OK, maybe Green.

"I walked to the doctor's office without my boot or anything," Green said. "I thought it was impressive. I guess not."

The big concern was that Green could possibly displace the bone if he kept playing through the injury, and that was not a chance worth taking. "Right now, it's a clean break," he said.

The Mets activated Ben Johnson to replace Green on the roster, and they were fortunate to learn today that Carlos Gomez was fine after suffering a mild strain of his left hamstring on Saturday. Gomez had no setbacks after a 40-minute workout that included running the bases and he is tonight's lineup, playing rightfield and batting eighth.

"I can do everything," Gomez said. "I can run at 100 percent. There's no limitations."

As the Mets take batting practice, the visitors dugout is overflowing with reporters and TV cameras awaiting Bonds. It seems that Bonds is refusing to do his standard news conference on the first day of a visit by the Giants, and as you might guess, that has annoyed the large media contingent assembled for the event.

Of course, there's nothing Bonds likes better than tweaking the media, and he kept us hanging for three days during the Mets' trip to the Bay Area earlier this month. In the end, he never granted us an interview.

While I wish Shawn Green a speedy recovery, I am curious to see if this injury will make him even slower. Perhaps
a 100-yard dash with Carlos Delgado and Rusty Staub to determine the all-time slowest
Met.

I think Dave Magadan or jason philips would win. . . .I mean lose that race;-)

Jason Phillips an excellent call, but Dave Magadan was Carl Lewis compared to the other guys. While a non-Met, Richie Zisk also a worthy slowpoke.

Um... Mo Vaughn? How about Doug Mientkiewicz? I don't think either of them could score from second without either a home run or a fatality on the other team.

Curious that our little Braves friend magically disappeared now that they trail by 5 and are hearing the Phillies footsteps. Almost time to stick a fork in those boys from Atlanta... It was only a year ago today that the Braves were 27-25, a whopping 2 games worse than this year's juggernaut. And then, just like it's looking now, they went into the tank.

Say goodnight Gracie.

But hey, at least you beat us 6 of 9, that's gotta count for something, huh?

Even though Shawn Green had never been on the disabled list in his 15 year baseball career, the man with the nickname "Indistructable" has been placed on the DL. With caution the primary motive, it is probably a prudent decision to place Shawn on the DL to make sure the break is not made worse, which would result in a longer period of time disabled.
As for the surly Barr Bonds, I heard about Barry's act of leaving the media hanging on Daily News Live on Sports Net New York. Just Barry Being Barry, I guess....

Barry Bonds is a primma donna. His General Manager singled him out as one of three players who made themselves "unavailable" for the first game of the series against the Mets.
A game they should have won.
This is unacceptable from a team perspective according to Sabean. But Barry has never been in it for anyone else but Barry.
Jim Leyland should have b**ch slapped him years and years ago.
It might have sent him a message and made him a better person instead of "surly" and negative.

Ron Hodges circa 1983.
He was like a cheetah chasing a gazelle across a grassy hillside....
