It was fun while it Lastings

As expected, the Mets sent Lastings Milledge to Triple-A New Orleans after Thursday's game. Shawn Green's hot start made this a no-brainer move, but couldn't Willie Randolph have given the kid one start?
I know a lot of you are wondering why Julio Franco gets to be on the team and Milledge doesn't. I wouldn't have kept Milledge either if he wasn't going to play -- and he wasn't, not regularly -- but the Mets love Franco and he's a pretty good pinch hitter. He's not going anywhere. Don't waste your brain cells on that one.
A bigger issue for Randolph going forward is getting Endy Chavez some at-bats. Endy is too good to be just a pinch runner and defensive replacement.
What do you think? Do you think Milledge will be a Met next season or gone in a trade for a pitcher? I think gone.

The Mets farm system is pretty loaded in the outfield. I suspect that Milledge will probably be traded after doing well in New Orleans unless Green or Alou suffers a major injury before the trading deadline.

I think Milledge has fought his way back into the Mets good graces. Since Alou and Green are gone next season I expect Milledge to be the starting RF. Johnson may be the starting LF. Heck they both may get some starts this season if Green and/or Alou get hurt.

I think alot depends on how the combination of Pelfrey-Perez do in the rotation and if Pedro is coming back by Aug. If their rotation stays intact I think Milledge stays. They'll need him next year if Alou and Green are gone especially since Chavez isn't viewed as an everday player. Also, it's not impossible that both Green and Alou are in slumps or on the DL at the same time thus creating a starting chance for Milledge. I'm still not sure what trade value Milledge has right now, a solid spring training doesn't increase your trade value all that much. A solid '08 would bring in a better return pitcher and clear room for Gomez and Martinez. Another possibility is Green stays relatively productive and the Mets trade him for a pitcher, then bring up Milledge.

Gomez has good numbers but he has never hit for power in the minors. He hit 7 HRs last year. I don't know if the Mets want such a light hitting RF. Gomez is built a lot like Alex Rios and has similar power potential. Milledge is a more advanced hitter right now and will probably prove it in AAA. Pitching is so scarce that I guess a trade could occur if a good pitcher was available. Milledge will make the Mets pay however, he might be another Kevin Mitchell-MVP.

Rieber: we already have the "Free Endy Chavez Society" . I am a charter member. We will not rest until Endy is a starter. The scary thing about Endy Chavez is how much his situation parallels the Melvin Mora debacle. People talk of Gomez or Fernando Martinez, but I envision Endy Chavez and Melvin Mora (returning via trade or free agency to play outfield for us). Fernando Martinez hit like a lightweight in winterball this year and Gomez-----he has no powergame on the major league level. Bring back Mora and undue that bad move. He is the perfect Met. So is Endy Chavez. How about an outfield of:
Chavez--Beltran--Mora in 2008 through 2011.
That is cooking with crisco.
