Willie or Won't He?

Day 2 from Mets mini-camp in Port St. Lucie, Fla:
-- Spoke to manager Willie Randolph for a little bit today. He looks ready to go for the season except for the salt-and-pepper goatee he's sporting. That will be gone in a month when the Mets report to spring training.
-- It looks like the contract extension talks between Randolph and the Mets are not going well. This may just be intuition on my part -- Willie wouldn't discuss it today at all and GM Omar Minaya didn't say much about it yesterday -- but the extension hasn't gotten done and doesn't appear close to getting done. Perhaps Randolph is asking for more than the Mets want to pay a manager; what else do people in these situations argue about except money? Randolph and Minaya both said the manager has a contract for next year and they don't have to complete an extension.
That leads me to ask: what kind of world is it when Tom Coughlin gets a contract extension for the job he's done and Willie Randolph doesn't get one for the job he's done? Even if Willie's not perfect, he proved last season to my satisfaction that he's a very good leader of men and the right man for this Mets team. If the Mets are willing to pay $10.8 million for three years of Scott Schoeneweis, can't they throw a little love -- and more importantly, money -- Willie's way?

If the season were to start tomorrow, the rotation seems like Glavine (L), El Duque (R), Oliver Perez (L), Maine (R)and Pelfrey (R) ?. Much finger crossing to be done here. Fortunately, the NL East is a weak division.

So Pedro has a son who claims he is 19....Now how old does that make Pedro? 35? BS.

Of course Omar hasn't given him an extension, his name is Willie Randolf, not Guillermo Randolfez.

Willie does deserve more . but he's a yankee . Coughlin Took the giants to the playoffs also . he got what he deserved. The man is a proven winner , not a whinner .willie will always be a winner And remember this is torres last year . If your willie your not in a rush.

Wow , this site must have been on vacation, glad you guys are back.

Willie gets no respect. Even before he was hired by the Mets, other teams wanted to hire him for peanuts.
How long did it take him to get a job anyway?
Some people just have a sexiness to them before they even prove anything and some have to prove it first. Willie is the latter.

The three day minicamp in Port St. Lucie has concluded. The highlights were that Pedro Martinez appears to be feeling good and progressing ahead of schedule. David Wright and John Maine were there. Willie Randolph still does not have a contract extension. I think you are right in that Willie deserves an extension for the job he has done in 2005 and 2006. As you question in your 1/10/07 Blog, I hope Willie has not requested Joe Torre type money. Even though Joe's teams may have underachieved over the past few years, he still has four World Series Rings. In 2006 the New York Mets had a clear shot to win a World Championship, as things evolved. The 97-65 Mets were clearly the dominate team in the National League. They should have captured the National League Championship. And after watching the World Series, who among us does not truly feel the Mets would have beaten Detroit. These chances do not come around every year. The fact that Willie's Mets did not capture the Crown in 2006 might be a reason why Willie will not be paid as an elite manager. This may be a hard line approach, but a World Championship was there to be won and the Mets of Willie Randolph failed to accomplish this goal. Anyways, it was great to reports from Port St. Lucie on Sports Net New York and other news outlets. Pitchers and Catcher report one month from today (2/25/07). It should be another great Baseball Summer in New York!!!

My previous post, there was a typo. The New York Metropolitans pitchers and catchers report to their Spring Training Home in Port St. Lucie, Florida on 2/15/07. Physicals are on 2/16/07. The first workout is 2/17/07 at the complex. The remaining players report on 2/21/07. This should clarify spring training reporting dates for the Mets.

Willie has showed himself to be no more than a mediocre manager over the last two years. He never makes adjustments during games; he disdains trading outs for better percentages (what the hell was Cliff Floyd doing up with nobody out and two men on in game 7 of the playoffs??? Didn't Willie remember something called a sacrifice bunt? Oh wait, he never uses that); in fact, the only strategy I've seen him use is the three run homer.

His management of the Mets pitchers and in-game strategies during the playoffs have likely shown Omar that Willie ain't an elite manager, and isn't worth more than what he's been getting paid.

I think he'll be one more year and out. And good riddance.
