Numbers, Numbers, Numbers

GM Omar Minaya has made a habit of chasing low-cost quantity over high-cost quality this offseason, and here's another example.

METS AND AARON SELE AGREE TO A ONE-YEAR CONTRACT

Aaron Sele, who has posted a 145-110 record during his major league career, today signed a one-year minor league contract with the New York Mets.

Sele, a 36-year-old righthander who was selected to two American League All-Star teams with the Texas Rangers in 1998 and the Seattle Mariners in 2000, went 8-6 with a 4.53 ERA in 28 games, 15 starts, with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2006. In 103.1 innings, he gave up 120 hits, 57 runs, 52 earned, with 30 walks and 57 strikeouts.

During his 14-year major league career, Aaron, a native of Golden Valley, MN, who now makes his home in Bellevue, WS, has pitched with the Red Sox, Rangers, Angels, Mariners and Dodgers.

From 1997-2001, he put together five consecutive seasons with double-figure victories. He was 13-12 with Boston in 1997, 19-11 and 18-9 with Texas in 1998 and 1999 and 17-10 and 15-5 with Seattle in 2000 and 2001.

Sele was 8-9 in 26 games for the World Champion Anaheim Angels in 2002.

Aaron began last season with the Dodgers’ Las Vegas (AAA) team of the Pacific Coast League. He was 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA before joining the major league team on May 5th. Sele was 3-0 with a 2.33 ERA through his first six Dodger starts. He captured three straight starts from June 24th-July 9th with a 1.50 ERA (three earned runs in 18.0 innings) during that span. Aaron was also 7-2 with a 4.00 ERA in 16 games, nine starts at Dodger Stadium.

Eleven of Sele’s final 12 appearances last year came in relief.

Last year at this time, most pundits questioned if the mets could overcome the braves even with the additions of wagner and delgado. many were fearful of a shaky rotation, given Pedro's health, and glavine's age. Yet this team , even with injuries to it's rotation, came within one hit of going into the world series against a playoff saavy cardinals squad, with a hall of fame manager. I am a transplanted new yorker living in the city of Indianapolis. I remember the disappointment colts fans had in losing to the steelers in spite of having the 1 seed in the AFC last year. I told my wife, afterwards, that the colts will get to the superbowl. As of this writing, the city of Indianapolis is excited over finally getting to the 'big game'. What the mets did last year was a bonus. And I believe last year was a forshadow of years of good baseball. I am happy that the mets are taking a chance on minaya and randolph, in spite of the howls of narrow minded and bigoted fans. I am embarassed at the posts of those who claim to be fans of the mets who have conveinently forgotten the lean years where there was lack of vision on the field and in the front office. You have become bewitched not only by the ''win now'' journalists, but by your own prejudices. Art Howe had no idea what to do with jose reyes and almost broke him. Willie Randolph came , and challenged The young man. Part of the reason Jose Reyes is a legend in the making IS the same willie randolph some fan called mediocre. the other players swear on willie: Delgado, Maine, Chavez, etc. Please, Mr. Wilpon, don't listen to the myopic fans who post things out of their own prejudices and know nothing about what it takes to field a winning team. The knicks, rangers, giants etc have all suffered due to irrational coaches, and front office moves. The mets will be a force for years to come. Stay the course. As a fan, I thank Mr. wilpon, Mr. Minaya, and Willie Randolph for bringing hope and excitement back to shea stadium .

Nice to see the Mets sign another youngster.

Wow, Michael, I agree and could not have said it better.

Lets go Mets in 2007!

Ditch the black in the logo and unis. Go to www.ditchtheblack.com and find out more.

Why dont we sign Bernie Williams and put him in Right Field ---- it would be an upgrade over our Shawn Green (Monster)

Also, how about getting another back up catcher so we can use Castro's bat ... it was a waste that he was wasted away during the playoffs on the bench.
