Apprently the Mets were impressed by Guillermo Mota's mea culpa last month after it was revealed that he violated MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment program. So much so, in fact, that they brought him back with a two-year, $5 million contract that was finalized Thursday -- even though Mota will be suspended for the first 50 games next season.
"Guillermo took responsibility for his actions and expressed extreme remorse for his mistake,β GM Omar Minaya said in a statement. βHe handled himself in a stand-up manner.β
What do you think? Did Mota deserve another chance?

Did any info ever come out about when he failed the test? If it was with Cleveland, perhaps the drugs were making him too strong and putting too much on his changeup. At least he stood up and took responsiblility which is more than can be said for Barry!
Based on the contracts being passed out this year? Yes, he did deserve another chance :)
Cheat and get a 2-year $5M contract. Seems like justice to me. As a Mets fan, I can never criticize the Yankees for Jason Giambi or any other organization that signs or honors a convicted or suspected cheater. Remember, Guillermo Mota decided, against the wishes of his catcher Paul LoDuca to throw a fast ball (steroid enhanced), instead of a change-up to Scott Speizo with two-outs in the seventh inning of Game 2 vs. St. Louis. That pitch created a game and series changing point. The Mets, who traded a quality pitcher because his wife revealed too much during a Kids Christmas Party, reward a cheat with a two year contract. I never want to hear the Mets discuss their "moral fiber" again.
sure mota deserves a second chance . but at a significant discount. if he dosn't have his stuff next year without the juice , NO ONE will take him in a trade.
the only thing he is remorsful about is getting caught. at least we could lord our honor over the giambi supporting yankee fans. le weep.
I think it's a good deal. 2 years 5 million is a steal for a set up man with Mota's ability. I know he is suspended, but at least he didn't pull a Palmerio and blame everyone else.
Everyone deserves a second chance. Mota has expressed genuine remorse for his actions, never stepping away from that responsibility.
Sure he deserves another chance. Mota proved very stable at many key times during the season. No one is perfect but I just hope theyve protected themselves against future violations if he were to have any. Bad to tie up that kind of money in someone that might not be able to pitch for them. Hopefully he's learned his lesson. He's maintained my respect at least for owning up to things instead of making excuses, placing blame, or remaining in denial...
i think he should be given
a second chance. he is human. but lets go with a 1
year deal 2.5 million and if it works out great!
if not its only 2.5 and 1year not a big deal.
People just like pointing their dirty fingers at Mota and say that's the bad guy. When he was tested, he stunk up the joint w/ orioles BAD,so its not like it made a difference in his production. He's always had an awsome changeup and his velocity has been the same.
Mota's performance was impressive albiet juiced in '06
After rehabbing from it and missing the first 50 games of the year, I do not believe that he will be effective. I think that this is a questionable move at best.
I think Mota deserves to give the $$$ to me and the fans who spent a lot of plaoff-ticket $$$ to watch him blow that game that (as it turned out) probably cost us a WS Championship vs. the fumbling Tigers, not just a pennant...
It's time for Omar to act and get Marcus Giles for 2nd base. Give him occasional rest with Valentin. Dump Easley. Shouldn't have signed him in the 1st place. The Mets got away with Valentin for '06 but at 38, he's a utility man at this stage of his career.
Now that Boston has signed the Japanese pitcher and has no need for more pitching, the Mets should go after Clemens. It's a great fit: Mets need a veteran pitcher and have lots of cash, and they would prefer a short-term commitment. I think Roger fits the bill.
Right now there's 2 glaring roster spots being taken up by Julio Franco and Damian Easley.
By signing Marcus Giles, the Mets can take 38 year old Jose Valentin and spot him in 3 infield postions + some outfield if needed. He'll wear out by playing the same amount of games at 2nd base as he did in '06.
It's never been shown what he was busted for and when he was taking whatever he took. Steroids do not help a pitcher much except for recovery purposes. I don't think he was throwing 98 because of juice. He's always done this and that's that. Plus, is it 5 million minus 50 games salary? Then the deal is only for about $4.3 million. The Yanks gave me 8 chances so Mota deserves one.
its a great move. randolph must understand mota can only pitch one inning, and one inning only. he lights out. he only gets in trouble when he pitches a second inning i.e. scott spezio in game two
lets face it folks, when the stakes are high who would you rather have
mota or heilman?

I do not recall the mets winning any championship or sustain a winning tradition for 5 years. Omar and the Mets are playing as if they are a world class champions and unwilling to dole out the big money. The Mets off season this year has been a failure. All I heard is a lot of could have. I could have Roy Oswalt, Jason schmidt, Barry Zito, etc. We signed Moises Alou to a one year contract. The organization is again hallucinating and they should change it. They should have doled out the money for Schmidt or trade for someone like a Garcia, Buerhle or McCarthy. McCarthy could have been had for a Pelfrey and Milledge. I would have done that Pelfrey and McCarthy are about the same in Potential and McCarthy has big league experience which Pelfrey doesnt.
What is with new york sportswriters nowadays? I don't think Zito is worth all that money, but the writers chastize this team for not being foolish and giving . Remember, your precious yankees didn't get zito either. Oh for the days of Dick Young, Phil Pepe and others who knew the game
Mota deserves a second chance, but I'm not sure you do after today's column. Take a couple days, then comeback and explain why you think the Mets should have matched, or topped that contract. The rotation that was a Beltran gapper away from the World Series, while lacking, does not require such an absurd addition. It's only money? that's your logic? get real. Did you scream that at your Bosses when SI hired Heyman away? I was bummed when Hampton left, but there was no way for the Mets to match that offer. What with Colorado schools being so good and all. Players have a value, and teams have a budget. according to Minaya, Zito contract does not match either. That's fine.
It is my point of view that it is up to the Mets if they could do a good enough job in the beginning of the season because of some of their weaknesses.
For they should get enough help as the season rolls on.
Pedro, Mota and the youth starters (with Petersons help)need time to come around.
And the replacement for LF will be more then good enough.
RF and perhaps 2nd base may be weak but it is not so bad for a 7th/8th hitters.
As time goes on Omar will fill in the pieces for long term use.
I feel that he will get them from the minor players coming up, or from the "right" FA who show up each years.
And he will pay them top money when it it is the right time. Zito was not the right time.
