« Game 2 at night | Main | Floyd update »

Friday Morning QB

It's easy to second-guess decisions after the fact, but the Mets made two mistakes with Cliff Floyd. Not only was it a questionable move to put him on the NLCS roster -- Floyd was obviously hurting during Tuesday's workout -- but to start him in Thursday's Game 1 was asking for trouble.

Fine. Put him on the roster. Floyd is a dangerous power threat, and despite his poor history as a pinch hitter (0-for-12, 7 Ks in the last three years) maybe he can help off the bench. But to use him in leftfied was more than taking a risk. Floyd was an accident waiting to happen.

In the first two innings of Game 1, the sellout crowd seemed like it was holding its breath when Floyd chased after two fly balls -- and looked like he was jogging on hot coals. So it was hardly surprising that Floyd had to be removed after he flied out in the bottom of the second inning. He's due for an MRI this afternoon, and definitely won't play in tonight's Game 2.

Now that the Mets may have to play shorthanded for the remainder of the NLCS, is it a big deal?

Hindsight is always 20/20 and none of us were privvy to the conversations with the training and medical staff. I'm just speculating, but I'm assuming the docs told the coaching staff that there was a threat of Cliff tweaking or tearing the achilles but an even better chance that it would hold up and it was just a matter of pain management on Cliff's part. There's no way Willie (1) adds Cliff to the roster and (2) starts him if the docs relayed significant doubt about the achilles holding up. But, maybe the doctord did just that and Willie ignored them. That's why we have crack reporters on the scene to dig up the dirt.

I had a vision......of Cliff Floyd .....hitting a monster, heartbreaking, pinch hit home-run.....the kind that would crush the very will of the Cardinals. But alas, now since Cliff has become a peg-leg. Thank you Willie. When is Endy Chavez going to get a little respect? Why take a chance like that with Floyd?

Cliff, nice shirt brother.
I have pajamas like that.
Very colorful.
Very colorful.

willie you must bunt, in that spot, to put floyd in, that was a poor decision on your part, now his last at bat with the mets will be remembered how he just watched a called strike waste your world champ, run..
