Do or Die

It's about an hour before the first pitch of Game 7 and the Cardinals are taking batting practice. The Mets seemed pretty loose earlier, with Carlos Delgado singing "Jo-se, Jo-se, Jo-se" to the shortstop as the two stretched on the grass. Delgado even flipped a half-dozen baseballs into the stands on his way off the field.

The Mets, as a whole, seem to be reflecting the relaxed confidence of their manager, who made it sound like going to Detroit is a done deal.

"I've been here many times, man," WIllie Randolph said during his pregame news conference. "Feels good to me. This is nothing to new to me. I feel like this is where I should be. I've been floating around all day long, looking forward to getting to the ballpark and ready to be out there with my boys."

In a few more hours, the NL will crown a champion.

LETS GO METS !!!!!!!

Dear God,
If you let the Mets win....
I will promise to be nicer to people.
Yes lord, I know I am a jerk,
I will make a better effort lord.
Step one, will be to patch up my relationship with blogger Zoe.
I promise...no more impure thoughts.
Especially the ones involving tapioca pudding
in fact all dairy products.
I also promise to be nicer to blogger Bob,
although that may hurt.
I also promise to stop calling Anthony Rieber a backstabber,
for leaving the met blog to join the yankee blog.
I know he cannot help selling out O Lord.
Please hear me now.

So the question now begins, Mets vs Yankees, which was a bigger bust? I say the Mets, since the National League is so weak.

so do i willieshould go what a bad job. choke artist

HOW CAN YOU DO THAT!!!!!!!!! HOW CAN YOU BLOW A GAME LIKE THAT. BOTTOM OF THE NINTH 2 OUT AND HE LOOKS AT CALLED STRIKE THREE. BELTRAN CAN DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Johnette Howard: A-Rod should give Beltran a call (bad deal) - atleast arod would have gone down swinging.

I can honestly say that my only true pleasure out of this baseball season came last night as I watched with glee as an overrated, over hyped team got out hustled, out coached and straight up outplayed by the Cards. The only thing better than that was seeing you shocked Mets fans lingering in the stands for a half hour after the game. You can say whatever you want about how the Braves stunk up the joint this year, and I agree, but the rudest, most classless and obnoxious fans in the baseball world got what was coming to them last night! Suck it Glavine! Suck it Mets! (Oh, but I gotta give it to you jerks, that catch/double play was probably one of the best plays in postseason history)

Ur in the wrong blog "Braves fan". The Yankees blog is just underneath this one, b/c that's where u'll find the most obnoxious fans in baseball. Anyway, how can u all be so upset over the loss? Even upset over Beltran, get a grip on reality. That was a team loss last night. They played very good this year and i'm excited about our future. Especially since we saw two guys that will be in our starting rotation next year go out there and pitch unbelievable. If we grab another starter or two during the offseason we'll be fine. Maybe add a little bit to our bench, that'll help alot also. It was a great season but we lost, don't be like the Yankee fans and start blaming one guy for the loss. Or else we will all look like jerkoffs just as much as them.

clean house. first fire willie

for all the Mets fans who went on the Yankee blogs this one is for you:
HA HA HA HA HA!!!

It was a very good season. We may not be in the World Series but the team's foundation is solid for future success. Let's thank the whole team for giving us a season of joy and then say, "Stay healthy and we'll see you next year!"

Beltran? I thought I was watching A-Rod!!! Carlos caved like a West Virginia coal mine!!!!!!

My dachsund produces the same crap after his morning meal and no one pays him a gazillion dollars to do it!

At least Lo Duca got on base like he was SUPPOSED to!

Baseball players are the sports arena's Paris Hilton; loaded with money for NO APPARENT REASON!

38 years I'm a Mets fan but thingk I will start cheering for the Cubs: it's just as EMBARASSING!!!

ha ha

Well...No shock here to what happened...I am used to my favorite teams breaking my heart although I thought this was the year until all the starting pitchers decided to get hurt. Even if the Mets won I was seriously doubting that they would keep up with the Tigers. I know that sounds silly but the Mets blew this seies big time starting with Wagner and then them not hitting. This series should have been over a long time ago but they did it to themselves. All of a sudden the bats decided to go to crap. All I can say is WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR!!! That will be our year(again!) This Mets fan is drained and exhausted see you all next year.

Well boys, I had a great time....I really did. Thank you so much for this blog and for all of your thoughts. It was really great times. I was glad that if the mets went down , at least they did it in their "real" uniforms that I love so much.
Endy Chavez is a starter next year....batting second.
We haven't had anything like him since Len Dykstra.
He will be a fan favorite next year. I had such a real heartfelt joy watching
and reading about the mets this year. In my personal life, it brought me so much joy as my only child, my daughter has been very sick and doing better and better.
I love the Mets and I know that they will bring us all
more special moments, next year.
See you in the spring boys,
every day is a special day for us all.
But it always is for people who can sit down,
have a really good hotdog, some crackerjacks,
take out the gloves and play catch,
and talk about the Mets.
take care always--Frank D.

I'm as devastated as the next Mets fan, but can you really call this season a failure? 97
wins, no Martinez, no El Duque
Cliff Floyd out, no Duaner Sanchez (and Heilman's not even pitching the 9th then)and we're still an inning or two from the World Series? Leave the whining to the Yankees fans.

City Girl as you were told way back when.....The only party at shea will be the Holloween Hop......the highlight of the affair will be Frank D bobbin for apples in the mens room......well he calls them apples

The Mets showed a lot of heart. With two top pitchers out ... with Wagner not coming through in Game 2 ... Chavez's great catch clouded what shouldn't have been that close of a game. Maine beat Carpenter in Game 6 and you couldn't ask for more than that. As Wallace Matthews said, why wasn't Wagner on the mound for the ninth inning of Game 7, even with a tie score at home? It was a good season. The Mets did not fold like the Yankees. The Mets were only one or two pitchers short and even then, they were so, so close. I am proud of them. I really am.

So you were missing two pitchers, so where the Cards. Mulder and Izzy. Our 3rd baseman has a bad shoulder and our first baseman a bad hammie. No crying in Flushing.

is this the best the national league has to offer? the mets and the cards both stink.

Mets fan for life..They choked...its about every at bat , every putch , every inning ......not the overall record...Mets blew it by getting hits when it mattered..They sit arounf , if they care about
and wonder if they have a pitch back ...and get an RBI when it mattered most...like the 9th innning of the 7th game...you guys pissed meoff...there is no next year,...do it know...play for today ...lime you wanted..you guys suck...Im pissed

Wallace Matthews is a hack, plain and simple. It's amazing how someone can make a living simply by taking popular opinion and logic and writing a column that completely opposes it. His column might have a ring of truth to it if MLB suddenly decided to not let the Mets make any transactions for a year but it's safe to say that Omar and Co. will make moves to correct the weaknesses that Mr Matthews thinks will doom the squad to failure in '07. So what if the rest of the division gets better too? Maybe we'll only win by 5 games next year. And the team will indeed "Build off this experience" and use it to motivate them for next year. Everyone available to play gave 110% The only way the mets give more than that is if Pedro, El Duque and Sanchez were healthy and available. And if you don't think having those three guys around would have meant even ONE more victory in the Cardinals series, Wallace then you've been sniffing too much "white-out" my friend. This year was not the Mets' "Perfect Storm" by any means. They had a great regular season, cruised to a division title, got some key injuries at the worst time and went as far as they could with what they had. There's nothing to be ashamed of in that at all, unlike your writing. And if you don't believe that, maybe you need to see if there are any vacancies over at PennySaver.

I'm with Sean. Wally Matthews is like Paris Hilton, he has a reputation, but no one knows why. Today's column hows a general ignorance of baseball and a specific ignorance of the Mets.

His point is that there will be six different WS winners in the last six years. True. However, in the last six years the Yankees made the playoffs all six times, the Red Sox four times, the Twins five times, the Braves five times, the Cardinals four times, the A's five times. The league has numerous returnees to the playoffs and there is no reason that the Mets won't be one of them.

The Mets face no major free agent defections, and with the exception of Carlos Delgado, everyone's pretty young. I think everyone agrees they won't have such an easy division next year, but they will be the clear favorite.

The Braves have John Smoltz a year older and Bob Wickman as their closer. Marlins will have a new manager and unless they get a stadium, Loria is putting no money into that team. The Phillies will contend, but the Mets would likely win the division or be the wild card. Think about the '99 and the '00 teams. Same deal.

I'm with Sean, Wally Matthews shows an amazing ignorance of the sport he is supposed to cover.

The Mets lost a seven game series and never lost more than two in a row. That is a
collapse? They didn't hit and lost a tight game. Period.

yes, there will be seven different winners in the last seven years: Yankees,
D-Backs, Angels, Marlins, Red Sox, White Sox and Cards/Tigers.

D-Backs lose Schilling and Johnson to free agency. red Sox lose Pedro, Derek Lowe to free agency. Marlins have a fire sale.

In that time, the Yankees have won their division all seven times, the Twins have made the playoffs five times, the red Sox five times, the A's five times, the Braves six times, the Cardinals five times. Admittedly the Mets might not win it all next year, but they will likely make the playoffs and build from this year.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? OMAR SHOT HIS WAD FOR THIS YEAR AND HAS NOTHING LEFT TO RELOAD WITH. NO PITCHING AND STUCK WITH DEL GADO,GREEN,WAGNER AND PEDRO'S CONTRACTS ALONG WITH STREAKY BELTRANCE. NO ONE SHOULD BE FOOLED INTO THINKING HEILMAN AND MILLEDGE WILL BRING A QUALITY PITCHER.REYES AND WRIGHT ARE THE ONLY TWO KEEPERS.
